Had to by necessity. The tires on my Verossa were shot on arrival, so I just said fuck it and bought a set of West Lake winters. It was supposed to be a staggered 215-225/45/17 setup, but I just went 215 all round.

These tires are loud as all hell, though.

Just put down an appointment next Saturday to put on some new winter shoes, Nokian Hakkapeliitta R2 to be exact.

IDK, I personally just prefer dedicated winter to the three-season I got with the car.

been in a rwd mustang on snows every winter for the last 6 years... but only 2-3 winters have been really bad (eg. last year). not saying it's ideal though. a fwd winter beater on decent tires would be better.

Rwd + snow tires the past 5yrs for me. No issues til last winter. One of the days with thick ice on residential inside streets made my winter tires useless haha. I came to a stop at a stop sign down my block, did a burn out lol. Couldnt get grip, but that was one instance out of 5 years, so overall no issues.

RWD and snowies for the last 4 years for me, and in a lowered car as well. Been through plenty of whistler snowstorms with no issues. I'll be picking up something else this year, but its more because I hate throwing a snowy dog in my M3s back seats. The car will likely be RWD as well.

Starting to hunt for them now. Split between all weather or dedicated snows for the beater Jeep.

RWD: have run dedicated snows on a Z3 (here) and a Boxster (Minnesota), both manual. Worked great in both cases. Not keen to put the 4C on the road in the winter, thus the above beater.

RWD and Snow tires also, no issues at all. I think the most important things for winter driving

1) Driver skill and awareness (can't do shit if you can't react properly or adapt to road conditions)
2) Winter Tires (No all season bullshit pls, cant stand asshats who drive on summers, spotted a few of those last year)

AWD or 4WD, this is a bonus. Nice to have but cant do shit if you can't drive. AWD might be better off the line but you still need proper tires to be able to stop, and be able to gauge the stopping distance required in unfavorable conditions

Even though the rules are in place today, hard to justify putting on the winters when the nightly lows aren't dipping below 7...

Just remember that because people have had success driving their RWD with winters has worked, it doesn't mean it is the best option. Of course, if you have no options anything works. Just don't drive like how I'm assuming most of us did when we were 16-21

I really like Nokian's Hakkapeliitta line of tires. Probably a bit overkill for most BC driving. If you plan to drive through the Coquihalla or to Kelowna I can't think of better highway winter tires. This is a picture of the tread design of their studded version. Noisy as shit, but instils confidence in winter driving conditions. These are my truck tires.

Anyone have a good suggestion for value rims purchase?

Picked up a set of Michelin Latitude X-Ice Xi2 for my GF's new CRV. I am looking for an OEM type looking set of rims that won't break the bank.

This is my #1 option so far. $159 a rim including shipping.

Why not just steelies? They're winter tires gonna be covered in grime anyways. I'm sure theres lots of cheap OEM stock wheels on craigs as well.

Because steelies aren't a whole lot cheaper and they are ugly as sin. I could buy hubcaps but then the price is equivalent to a cheap alloy. Really these will be on the vehicle for almost half the time so might as well look half decent considering the amount we just spent on a brand new vehicle.

I thought there would be a lot of used OEM wheels too. Sadly, there isn't.

YMMV, but some Honda dealers have a sale on their rims. You can usually find it on the dealer side of the Craigslist pages.

My stock tires are 235/45/17.

Am I able to use 205/50/17 without affecting the speedo too much?

The car in question is a 2017 Subaru WRX

1% smaller in diameter. That's about as close as you can get. Run em.

Edit: They are a fair bit narrower though. Substantial enough to be noticeable i'm sure.

I ran 225/50/17 on my WRX, slightly taller and narrower, and they were awesome in the northern winter.

EDIT: Woops, I rn 225/50/17, not 225/45

RWD with winters crew member checking in. No issue with grip at all. If anything, my biggest enemy last winter was ground clearance. Car is also lower this year so this should be fun

Those 205s will increase the speedo by 1%, but they seem a little bit narrow for the car.

Also RWD+Winters checking in. Did Surrey to Richmond in an LS400 last year and survived, but keeping a slight countersteer down Highway 17 to the 99 was the tricky part, along with a period where my complex strata forgot to call in the plows to clear parking areas. Getting out was fun.

However, I wonder if having LSD equipped will change things this time. RWD meet?
