If you don't mind heading down to the US, Discount Tire (through eBay) is doing a $100 off $400 right now. Might be worth a shot if you can't find what you want locally.

Can anyone confirm the rumors about being able to get a ticket for not running snow tires during the winter? I bought new DWS' on my e92 xdrive and had 0 problems all of last winter in the huge snow storms, I have confidence that they'll do great again this year but it would suck if I got a ticket for them :|

nsx042003 10-18-2017 12:45 PM

^ tires with snowflake symbol or M+S with at least 4mm tread will not give you a ticket.

If it's M+S rated and has more than 6/32(? Don't exactly remember tread required) then it's legal. They only check when you're heading up the Sea to Sky or Hwy 1 anyways so within city limits you're ok.

Snowing in Whistler and north to Pemberton - expect tire checks on the S2S coming up over the next few months

Tires have about 6000km on them so the tread will be fine for a while, the only problem is I don't believe DWS has M+S or the snowflake symbol :/ I've given up on being able to drive to Whistler, but do you think Cypress would be okay?

Kind of shitty since my gf's winter beater has some really crappy snow tires that slip even in the rain, which would technically be legal to drive up to Whistler but would be a lot worse than my DWS up there lol.

Teriyaki 10-18-2017 02:54 PM

I'm thinking the gf should invest in some better winter tires for that beater.

I ran DWS on my ISF before and i had taken it to Whistler in the snow before, obviously not the best but i didn't get stuck. and I thought it is a M+S tire. Dry, Wet, Snow, hence DWS

Cypress? Absolutely not. You will get ticketed. Last year the first few weekends were fucked for everyone because people with all seasons and summers got stuck, ruining it for everyone

legally the dws won't get ticketed unless if they're bald.

stupid.

dws and dws06 both are m+s stamped, but dont compare to a winter tire at all.

Limitless 10-18-2017 04:08 PM

Oh I didn't even know they were M+S stamped, should have taken a closer look. Thanks for the info everyone!

Last year I went around saving all my friends in FWD cars with cheap snow tires who got really stuck in some steep icy + snowy hills in Burnaby. Plowed through snow and never even close to getting stuck using DWS with xdrive, even when I went up Cypress last year and had my car covered up to the headlights in snow after boarding. Of course, actual winters would be much better (Blizzaks on my gf's Mazda 3 last year were amazing), I don't think I'll be going anywhere where I'll need more than the DWS. For now anyways.

AzNightmare 10-18-2017 04:08 PM

I don't bother with M+S tires... Pretty much a lot of All-Seasons are M+S.
And we all know how effective those are when Vancouver actually gets a legit snowfall (like last year).

dared3vil0 10-18-2017 04:39 PM

The really fucked thing about the M+S thing being legal? Both sets of ultra high performance summer tires I have kicking around from my Mustang? (Pilot super sports and BFG Sport comp 2) are both M+S rated.

Yes, these are legal to run...

nsx042003 10-18-2017 06:29 PM

^ Yes...which is why the enforcement is silly if you ask me. I'm willing to bet 95% of tires on the road are M+S, because not many cars come with dedicated summers much anyway

That is incorrect information.

Bf Goodrich sport comp 2 have two models, one is a/s and one is not. Almost identical tread patterns but different compound and the a/s has slightly more siping.

The pilot super sport, pilot cup 2 and pilot spot 4s are NOT m/s, but the pilot sport as3 is

What if I told you that you were both correct?
There is indeed a BFG Sport Comp 2 A/S tire.
At the same time, some but not all sizing for the BFG Sport Comp 2 summer tire have the M+S marking.
See link below.

The PSS I don't know about, but I reckon dar3devil0 could easily clear it up if he posted a photo of what he meant.

AzNightmare 10-18-2017 07:22 PM

I believe the two tires are
g-Force Sport COMP-2
g-Force COMP-2 A/S

The names are similar, but the treads are nothing alike:

That being said, my Mazda3 has Pilot Sport A/S3 and while it was do-able last winter for the most part, it did get stuck once on a hill and it didn't offer a whole lot of confidence driving it. Even if I could half ass my way to point A to B, I would much rather invest in proper winter tires so that I can manuever away from all the other idiots slip and sliding around with A/S tires.

Edit: Oh... There is actually A/S version Sport Comp2 tires?? Exact same tire name and tread pattern??? :fulloffuck:

That’s what I said. Read it again

Edit: didn’t mean to sound snarky

dared3vil0 10-18-2017 07:26 PM

Nope, the BFG comp 2 is a max performance summer tire, with M+S on the sidewall. Same with PSS

Look on the bottom left.

Jonydakiller 10-18-2017 07:33 PM

I ran a brand new set of SPP on my xdrive last winter from burnaby to surrey.
NEVER AGAIN.
DO NOT DO THAT, you gonna either kill youself or kill somebody on the road.

AzNightmare 10-18-2017 07:58 PM

Sounds like we should take the "M+S" rating with a grain of salt. I'm currently running Sport Comp-2's. Hell no would I use these for winter.

twitchyzero 10-18-2017 08:18 PM

probably gonna get failed but can anyone recommend a specific traction-aids? vehicle is FF

There is a really cool product, they are like a combination of zip ties and tire chains. Let me see if I can google it. I heard though they might not be DOT or something
