What would happen if I ran one size up for the ratio up front...? So 225/45/18 with stock size 255/35/18 in the rear
CDizzle is right, just run square. I have the same set up as you for summer tires and run 225/40/18 square for the winter. One should be dialing back the hooning a bit, driving on cold roads on winter tires, no need for them big meaty rear tires. The other benefit of running a square set up is that you can rotate the tires to even out the wear to get a bit longer usable life from them.

But if you absolutely want to have a matching set of winter tires in your stock sizes without breaking the bank, PMCtire Nexen Winguard Sport is available in 225/40 18 and 255/35 18.

I would totally but my stock BMW Style 162 are staggered and I don't really want to dish out for another set of winter wheels since I'm planning to get a set of summer wheels for next year but I might have to because this sizing is quite difficult to get a matching set

^^ they are 18x8 and 18x8.5, not really staggered by much. You can still run 225/40/18 without difficulty. My same size snowies are on my 18x8’s

I'm considering if "All Weather Tires" is a viable option after I use up both sets of winter and summer tires.

Does anyone have any experience with all weather tires, and their treadwear and performance?

I'd prefer to have one set of tires for dry, wet, and light snow.

Thanks.
I drove on both the Nordman WR and Nokian WRG3 in Ontario for a season.
Was very impressed by the light-medium snow ability.
They take to aggressive driving (mind you these were Kia Soul/Rio) without complaining, though they certainly don't encourage it.

I see them more as a winter tire that you can drive all year round on, rather than a performance all season that works ok in the snow.
If you just daily drive your Mustang, they'll be a good fit.
But, if you're looking to do any frequent spirited driving or autoX, I would look at getting two sets of tires.

Just came to this thread to ask exactly about these two tires. Looking for a set for my father in law's TSX, was going to get the WRG3s for him but the Nordman WR seems like it'd work fine for him (drives infrequently and generally slowly). The only negative I've read about the Nordman WR is that it's got sloppy steering response (like a typical winter tire) - I don't see that as an issue for him.

The WRG3s would run him about $250 more than the WRs' - any reason to think that it's worth it?

thanks,

Instead of stretching the rears a little then I should probably go up one size from 225/40 to 225/45 if I have the room right?
Just trying to get something on discounttiresdirect before the $100 off $400 promo ends on the 31st

Going up a size in aspect ratio (from 40 to 45) won’t have any impact on stretch. If you don’t want stretch then you need to change width, go 225 front/235 rear.

google images of 225/40 18 tires on an 8.5” rim, there really isn’t very much stretch at all.

I runs 245's on my 8" rims, imo a 225 is small so the "extra" stretch from the added 0.5" width (0.25" per side) is going to be negligible.

I think you’re just overthinking it. Then maybe buy 235/40/18 and call it a day

I didn't want to take the chance in case the backorder takes longer than expected. But if it all works out for you, that is a sweet deal.
For Kal Tire? I'm getting them installed this coming Tuesday. There's no stock in BC, but they are bringing them in from Ontario or Alberta. I guess it depends on the size that you want.

thanks,
So here are the scenarios for when the WRG3 is worth it:
  • You drive a lot - the WRG3 has a longer treadlife warranty
  • You do the majority of driving in the summer - the WRG3 has some additional ribs & elements that promote airflow
  • You drive a heavy car - the WRG3 is not as soft and will have less accelerated wear issues
Sounds like your dad's use case meets neither of these, so I would advise sticking with the WR. Other available options include the Toyo Celsius (Consumer Reports says this is as good as the WRG3), GoodYear WeatherReady (brand new tire), and Kumho Solus HA31. The Hankook Optimo 4S that CT sells is inferior.

Oddly enough, Europe already has the WRG4 released. Wonder when we'll get it here.

As a side note, other than availability, I really think most people who don't have winter tires ought to get all weathers. IMO Vancouver's winters are more challenging than the ones we have here because of the ice, hills, and narrow arterials.

I'm not surprised. I was at the Costco in Surrey on Friday and they have tires everywhere. They have skids of tires at the end of every aisle and every corner.

It all depends on what Michelin has in stock. When I ordered my tires last year it came from two different Michelin warehouses out east and I had two different DOT codes. Shipping took 2 weeks

Long story short with Costco tires. The system was never ever meant to take as much business as it is doin now. For 15 years it’s been doing the same old same old. Now the last 5 years since the Canadian dollar has tanked, business has doubled every year.

Not only do we have more people buying tires than we have places to store then (let alone enough staff to install them or bays to put cars) but Michelin and Bridgestone can’t even ship us all the orders. My father ordered tires and was called to be told his appointment needed to be moved since the tires haven’t even shown up yet.

So it’s kind of a combination of just way too many people ordering tires, and the manufacturers not being able to fill the orders

Yes. Yes we are. Go apply at costco.ca but also go in store and show you’re serious.

thanks,
Nordman is owned by Nokian. The Nordman WR's are literally the same as Nokian WRG2's. Basically you're looking at a $250 difference between last generation and the current generation's technology. The WRG3's should have better traction and responsiveness, but unless your FIL is all about catching the apex you're better off saving the money and going with the Nordman's.

For me, I ordered a set of 225/45R18. They are regularly $235/ea at CT, and with the 20% discount, it's $189. Now add in the 5% price beat and I got the tires at $179/ea at Kal Tire.

Also Continental offers a $65 rebate if you buy 4 of these tires.
I did the same thing for my Xi3's. Ended up getting them for $175 each for 205/50/R17. Pretty happy with the price and much prefer dealing with KalTire than CT.

Dropped by KalTire @ Marine Drive and they said they were out of stock for my size.

Just ended up going to CT instead, because I didn't want to wait any longer and risk not finding any more stock.

edit: Oops, I was referring to the Continental Winter Contact SI
