An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.... if you have snow tires, use em! Don’t be that person mad that there’s a 6+ hour wait the day before it’s about to snow because you pushed it a week or two

I got mine on today, only because i was off work early and figured why not, the morning temps can get into the 5-6 degree mark already, 11 to 12 degrees during the day isn't that bad for winter tires

Anyone use ipikes, or maxxis np3s? Looking at getting studdable tires this season and these were recommended. Using them for commuting to the Kootenays. Specifically on the Crows nest from van to Cranbrook

Can also consider Toyo Gsi5 for your use case. The compound has ground walnut shells that are almost like mini studs.
Can confirm they work great on hard pack and ice with the benefit of not having to dealing with studs on dry/wet pavement.
parking neighbor got metal studs on his nokians and got a nice letter from strata

Just installed the ipike on the SVT. Deep aggressive tread @11/32, and I expect nothing but great things on that tire. I’ll let you know once it actually gets some use lol. Way more NVH than all season though
Has anyone had experience with Continental WinterContact SI?
I've previously run Altimax Arctics in the past and I just got rid of my new Altimax Arctic 12's.
Continental WinterContact SIs are lined up for my next set..

Had them on my wife's CRV and had them studded given we live up on SFU.
They did not disappoint.
Wife complained that she hydroplaned once but I am pretty sure she didn't given she was going 50 km/h.
Whenever I drover her car, the tires handled flawlessly, even in the rain as the angled grooves allow for water to escape.

Brother has them on his GTI. Great tire - good grip in bad snow/ice, and pretty good in the dry/wet conditions, not too far off a performance winter in feel (they replaced Dunlop Wintersport 3D's).
Why did you get rid of Arctic 12's?

The snow passes in southeastern Kootenays got dumped on, (there was already an hour delay on Salmo pass for avalanche control on my way back a coupe days ago) so I ended up going with the np3s which came in a studded version for a negligible difference (~25)in price. (everyone out there runs studded). First year I'll be running with a studded tire, so aside from the road noise, I'm expecting to at least not have to clench my anus as much when driving those high windy passes this season. I'm back in van for a couple weeks so right before I leave at the end of the month I'll throw them on. hopefully by the time I pass hope and head into manning pass, they'll be broken in properly.
Good video, Mind you we don't have the same snow conditions, this video puts it into perspective what the benefits are. (I felt this way when I had my SUV)Especially for the few days we do get snow hah!
I'd like to see the test with all seasons instead of summers.
The difference in grip in the video sure made the point though.
It did, but I mean, you're talking dedicated winter vs. UHP summer tire. I mean, they may as well have done racing slicks at that point. They're at polar opposites of the consumer tire spectrum (with polar results) and not representative of real-life decision-making as very very very few people who own cars that run UHP summer tires would ever even consider driving them in the snow and ice; those vehicles likely aren't even insured to drive in the winter.
Like you said, all-seasons would've been the better comparison, but no one seems to do those tests; it's always summers vs. winters.
I'd love a video that shows compares:
- expensive winters (e.g. Michelin X-Ice), cheap winters (no name/knock off Wal-Mart $40 specials), All-Weathers (e.g. Nokian WR), UHP all-seasons (e.g. Continental DWS), Performance all-seasons (e.g. Michelin Premier A/S), cheap all-seasons (Wal-Mart $40 specials)
- performance in a variety of conditions like: deep snow, light snow, compacted snow, wet snow, slush, ice (well below freezing and just above freezing), dry pavement at 4°C, wet pavement at 4°C, dry pavement at 10°C, wet pavement at 10°C, dry pavement at 18°C, wet pavement at 18°C
