Your car makes too little power and you driving too slow

I felt a huge different on both cars that I had put winters on, but they were both relatively high powered 2wd vehicles. The difference when dry/wet/cold is quite big. Never drove on snow on summers.
I do find a really good set of AS vs full winters, the difference isn't THAT big on the street when it snows.

I couldn't stand driving on Blizzaks in dry/wet conditions on my TSX b/c it made the steering so sloppy. Way too squishy of a tire for my tastes. Every spring I had to recalibrate my turn-in style cause the Blizzaks hate turn-in.

Now I run a touring winter (Conti TS850P SUV) and swap to DWS06+ for my summers - the performance gap isn't as big but the ride quality does take a beating with the DWS06+. On a smooth road I couldn't tell the diff but give me a few potholes and it's obvious.

Some shitty OEM Pirelli P-zeros on the Veloster N. I'm planning to order some new summer tires for the S2000 though, that one will be night and day difference compared to continental dws06, those were like skates at autocross. I think ride quality I can't really tell either cause I mostly drove shitboxes lowered on cheap springs my whole life lol.

I agree though that on the street in 90% of conditions the performance is very similar
Yeah, aside from autocross where my all season tires on the S2000 sucked, but how often do I do that haha.

I've been quite happy with my DWS06+, slightly stiffer sidewalls than the non + version, great everyday grip. Ride comfort is meh, but it's better than my M3 on 30 ratio tires lol.

The M3 has a huge different on summer vs winters, and yes it flops over, and under heavy braking the winters are all over the place. Add some tramlining with ruts on the road, it gets interesting.

What tire/car? I had that problem with the Dodge Ram/Blizzaks but 400lb of sandbags fixed that lol.

I'm still rolling on winters right now and hoping to swap them out some time this week since I don't have access to a drive way.

My current commute is 16km each way starting early in the morning and coming home in the afternoon where it's averaging 10 degrees

Am I killing my winters or overthinking it like Acura604?

Depends what your other tires are - you’re not killing them w short runs and low teen temps

Wait til winter tire restrictions are done

Probably not the best thread as the other ones are too old but since I have a tire question related to winter tires...

I'm on a set of Michelin Pilot Sport A/S3 (not the +) purchased new from Costco in June 2018. The tires are regularly swapped out in the winter so this is a spring/summer/fall tire only. I'm on a new set of 2022 Michelin X-Ice Snow for winter use.

The tires are on its 5th season with roughly 65,000 - 70,000KM on them now. Visually, they seem to have a lot of tread left, but I notice some cracking in the tread starting to develop. It's also very loud when driving and feels stiff as hell. I suspect I can run one final season out of them.

Any recommendations on what to replace them with these days? I'm normally a Michelin tire kinda guy but open to other brands. Looking for an all season or possibly a summer setup. Thanks in advance!

Conti DWS 06+ (AS) or ECS 02 (Summer), Michelin PS AS4+ (AS) or PS4/PS4S (Summer), basically the usual suspects. Costco 20% sale likely to happen again nearer to the fall. There's the new Bridgestone Potenza Sports but I don't know much about them.

Firestone Firehawk Indy 500s for a cheaper alternative.

I would go with a summer setup since you already have dedicated winters. How about something like Pilot Sport 5 tires? I noticed Costco started carrying them and they could be an interesting option.

PS5 is still very limited in sizing, sadly. So unless you have the right size - out of luck for now.

I will need new summer tires by the end of summer. Hoping for the PS5/ContiSportContact 7's to be more widely available by then.

PS5 and CSC7 aren't in the same class.
There's a hotter PSS5 coming out that's more inline with the max performance crowd.

And I was wondering why the snow tire thread is being bumped in May....

I would still say that the CSC7 and PS5 is still in the same class. One is just at the upper range and one in the lower range. They're both Max Performance tires. Yes, the PS5's are probably in the 300 treadwear range and the CSC7 is 240 treadwear. The PS5S will be probably 200-220 treadwear?

Depend what kind of summer driving you want.
But ECS are very good for spirited driving in the dry and wet.
Not as good as PS4/5 (in the dry) but they will cost a lot less, just a better performance/cost value, and they are better in the rain.

PS5 is probably overkill as daily unless you just plan to use it for some light track sessions. But if you want to commit to track, then get actual track tires (200tw tires).

Pardon my ignorance, but is ECS = Continental Extreme Contact Sport?

I should have replied with more detail - This is for my daily driver 2017 Toyota Corolla with 137hp @ 6100rpm and 126 ft-lb of furious torque at 4000rpm. Most of my driving is highway (because Toronto) with lots of stop and go bumper to bumper traffic on the highways and city driving.

We'll do the occasional trip to Buffalo, NY and to Montreal, but looking to do more extensive trips this year to the Maritimes. This car will never see track or autocross duty. The Boxster has a new set of Hankook RS4 endurance tires so that will be used mainly for track duty this season.

Re: Costco - They don't have shit in my area lol (GTA.) Stock size/factory wheel setup is a square 225/45/17.

More seriously though something like a Michelin Primacy A/S (or Primacy Tour A/S) would be great for a Corolla. On the cheaper end a General Altimax RT43 is a nice boring tire (or the Altimax365 which is an all weather tire)

I already know Badhobz will chime in and recommend Michelin CrossClimates.

The answer is a hard NO.
