This is in my top 5 movies of this year. Most of you probably haven't seen or heard of it because it was a limited release in Australia. Think of it as a thriller like Inception, except with time travel instead of lucid dreams. The last 30 minutes or so is a complete mindfuck. I would say it has one of the craziest plot twists since Oldboy. Highly recommend this movie, everyone needs to watch this
watched it last week and it really is a fantastic movie, dark and you really feel for the characters. its a must watch and I would give is a 8.5 or 9 outta 10
great film, but i couldn't conclude the final scene, or the epic final twist.... someone help me out here?
I'll try my best to explain it in order lol hopefully it makes sense
Spoiler!
- Jane is John (the man that impregnates herself/himself)
- The baby that was impregnated by John is Jane (I guess fucking yourself results in a baby with both male and female parts)
- Boston bomber is the bartender
- Agent that was seen in the beginning that gets blown up is John (resulting in facial reconstruction and damaging of vocal chords)
- The bartender is revealed to be John/Jane
- Bartender is baby Jane, female Jane, sex change John, agent John, and the Boston bomber
- I believe Robertson created this time paradox because he mentioned something along the lines of the bombing needing to happen to make the world a better place, so all these events must happen for the bombing to take place

but how can Robertson create the time paradox? it is a paradox, afterall. it's an infinite loop, there is no 'starting point'.
and even if the bombings were needed, couldn't he just have conducted the bombings himself? instead, we have infinite versions of Jane/John living the same life over and over just so the same timeline can happen infinite times
There are some problems with the paradox theory, but the movie itself was really good. When Ethan Hawke gets a good role, he plays it well, this was one of his better performances.
thanks for teh recommendation! Just caught it last night, holy fkkkk this movie is way more mindfucking than inception. I still cant make sense of it after reading your explanation.

It's pretty simple really, the girl was the same person as the guy all along, he was hunting himself the entire time. For simplicity, I'll refer to the character versions as either "the guy" or Ethan Hawke.
Remember when the guy is asked if he could kill the man responsible for stealing his child? The man that stole his child was the Ethan Hawke version of himself from the future, and the task that the guy was given (from Ethan Hawke) was to kill himself (herself at the time) to eliminate the paradox.
Remember the scene where the guy was trying to stop the bomber, but had his face burned off instead? That was when the guy switched to being Ethan Hawke's version, he had facial reconstructive surgery. The man that pushed the violin case over to him as he burned was Ethan Hawke, the man that the guy would eventually become.
At the end, the newest (gray haired) version of Ethan Hawke is revealed to be the bomber, and in the heat of the moment, the younger Ethan has to choose whether or not to kill him or let him live. The gray haired Ethan begs for the younger Ethan to let him live, as he realises his own mistake from years ago. The young Ethan kills the newest Ethan and the cycle continues, as he has failed to stop the paradox for the second and last time.
Until the main character breaks the cycle and lets the gray haired bomber live, it will continue forever. It's assumed that it never happens, and that timeline occurs for the rest of eternity.

finally got around to watching this...there weren't any twists really, you know what's going to happen from the start and i think the director/writer wanted it that way with the blatant "hints"
but it was still nice to see it play out on screen without any holes/errors
he himself, is a paradox. he has no history or future. he came out of no where. his parents are himself. the agency uses him cuz he's special. he leaves the least trace every time he time jumps, cuz he doesn't exist in any past present or future. he's like this paradoxical enigma that just suddenly exists for no reason at all.
what i don't get is.... they have crazy technology to time jump and do reconstructive surgery to almost perfection yet he still has those transgender scars. shouldn't his body be perfectly scar free? lol...
I just checked the credits on IMDB, then realized Sarah Snook played both Jane and John... I don't know, for some reason John looked different and I couldn't recognize them being the same face...
I was thinking the whole time, this actress that plays John totally looks like young DiCaprio from Titanic movie...
