Mitsubishi Confirms No Lancer Evo Replacement Planned—But the Model Will Go Out In Style
December 1, 2014 at 4:30 pm by Jens Meiners
The turbocharged, all-wheel-drive Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution may not have much life left in it, but at least it is getting a nice send-off. At least, that’s the conclusion we reached after Don Swearingen, executive vice president for sales at Mitsubishi in North America, answered several inquiries from Jalopnik readers with tasty nuggets of future-product information. Swearingen says that the company is planning for a special-edition Evo model and that it will be launched in June or July of 2015 “as a going away edition.”
The details are to our liking. The final Evo won’t be fitted with the MR variant’s dual-clutch automatic transmission. Says Swearingen: “It’s a GSR five-speed.” And there is more: “More horsepower, some suspension tuning, and some bits [and] pieces that are still being finalized.” In its current state, the Evo’s turbocharged four-cylinder engine is rated for 291 horsepower—we fully expect the farewell edition to push out over 300 horsepower. There is no information on pricing yet, but it’s safe to assume the unique model will cost more than the current Evo GSR, which retails for $35,305.
Also according to Swearingen, around 2000 units will be available, and we suspect that a lot of them won’t remain in stock condition. (The Evo GSR is a rewarding object of modification and enhancement, and we see no reason why the fanboys Mitsu is targeting with the special edition wouldn’t uphold the tradition.) But perhaps the final Evos’ future owners would do well to keep the cars original. After all, there may never be another Evo, at least not as we know it. Mitsubishi is shifting its focus toward eco-friendly, hybridized appliances, and Swearingen claims that “There are currently no plans for an Evo XI.” |

I personally dont think this was a good choice for Mitsubishi. With it's current line-up of cars I would say even they dont know what direction to go. I mean if they still has the Evo, the persona of a rally heritage would still be present. But right now all they have is a mediocre SUV, a really bad econobox, and a 7 year old car that has nothing going for it...

Mitsubishi only has one good halo car and they've killed it. What's left is a mediocre brand that's behind the competition. Did they not learn from Suzuki?

MMC is restructuring their lineup after years of poor sales in the North American market. In order to do so they have to kill the existing lineup and performance vehicles are not their bread and butter. They will focus on hybrid and electric technology as that is the future of automobiles. Eventually when they reclaim enough of the market they'll return new version in the performance market.

EVO and Impreza are icons on the past. Modern rally cars look nothing like them.
With so much competition in the sub 50k market. It is better for MMC to give up on the past and focus on creating something new and iconic.
