US Honda Civic to get Type R Engine

Honda is bent on kicking butt and taking names with its upcoming new Civic Type R, but since the Japanese hot hatch is based on the European model and isn't slated to come to the United States, it's been of little consolation to American enthusiasts. But if you're one of them, we've got good news for you.

According to Spanish site Motor Y Racing, a US version of the Civic Type R is in the works. The salient part of the Type R that would make the oceanic voyage to US showrooms would be the 2.0-liter turbo four that's said to produce between 276 and 320 horsepower, but we could expect upgraded suspension, rolling stock and other equipment to come as part of the package as well.

Just what form it would take we don't know. Currently American Honda offers the Civic as a coupe or sedan - not as a hatchback or wagon like it does overseas - so chances are that it'd be one of these betrunked body-styles that would get the upgrades. We're hoping for something more than an upgrade of the current Civic Si.

Competing rumors suggest that Honda could offer that same engine in a revised version of the CR-Z hybrid hatchback, which has long been begging for a more potent powerplant. But that's not to say that Honda couldn't offer both with the new turbo VTEC engine. Having driven prototypes for more performance-oriented versions of both the Civic and the CR-Z at Honda's R&D center in Japan a little over a year ago, this writer could tell you that either prospect bodes well for the return of the red H badge to the high-performance arena
Pls pls pls Honda pls! :ahwow::tears:

I've never been a fan of the civic but please yes yes yes

It will make the marketplace more competitive to have another quick affordable car. Imagine if auto makers keep on their promises and we have a turbo civic and a car like the kia stinger and an upgraded FRS.

YES PLEASE.

I think it's quite impressive for Civic. It's a Corolla competitor.

I think you have made a valid point.

Thanks for the perspectives timpo. I feel enlightened.

LOL gotta love how a one-off concept car Nazca C2 makes in the same list as a Mitsubishi 3000 and Corvette C4

smoothie. 12-15-2014 01:40 PM

I will buy one

But itll probably be over 40k

I was intrigued at first when I saw the NSX to start Timpo's list, as that is quite a salient point of comparison on how far cars today have come along.

... and then I saw the Nazca below it :rukidding:

Cool that Honda is bringing the red H and the "R" tag back to North America but I'm not holding my breath for something that is both awesome AND affordable. It will be one or the other.

CorneringArtist 12-15-2014 04:27 PM

It would need to be priced competitvely enough to take on the Focus ST (and now the RS), GTI, and the upcoming Mazdaspeed3 when it comes out. I say anywhere from 27-37k as a wild guess on price.

PuYang 12-15-2014 04:41 PM

I know I'm probably the minority here, but Euro civic FN2 is still one of my most favorite cars ever! (I have strange standards I guess lol).

If they end up bringing the Euro styled Hatch Civic Type R, I would trade-in my GTI instantly.

Would buy it over an FRS if the price points were similar....

... if Honda doesn't fuck up and bring the hatchback/wagon variant over here. 320hp and room for all my work gear, groceries, and an overnight bag or two for under $30k would be amazing. Not to mention living out my VTEC fantasies.

Also, I don't get why everyone is failing Timpo. It's very enlightening, as well as pretty awesome to see all the "real" exotic sports cars that now have less HP than a "sporty" economy car. If you've watched that Smoking Tire video where a V6 Camry sedan beats a Ferrari 348 in a drag race you know what I mean. Cars have come a long long way in the past 30 years.

rice cooker 12-15-2014 09:19 PM

having a 320hp civic is equivalent to raising the minimum wage to $15/hour

:seriously::fulloffuck::fuckthatshit::troll:

twitchyzero 12-15-2014 09:56 PM

import a EK9 Type-R for like 20% of the price and I'm willing to bet it'll still be more fun

I would say the Golf GTI is in different class.

Honda Civic Type-R: 320hp
Ford Focus RS: 330hp
Volkswagen Golf GTI: 210hp

Having 110hp to 120hp disadvantage is quite huge in this category.

"regional marketing thing" my ass... someone at honda really needs to wake up and figure out how to federalize the euro civic for north american shores and get out of their mentality that we only want sedans and coupes here.

as far as i'm concerned, the last good civic on our shores was the EK-series. after that they are all dead to me :(
