Gfs aftermarket car stereo broke. Want to surprise her and get a new one in or fix it. Just the screen is broken, thing still works, although she took the system out. I'm guessing it would be too expensive to replace just the screen so should just get a new system to put in?
Car: 2007 vw golf
Previous system: jvc kw-avxs40 double din 7’’ dvd
My knowledge on any of this: zero
Don't need anything too fancy since she'll probably get a new car in 2 years or so. Just needs to play music from her ipod..have a screen to choose music I guess..
Anyone have any recommendations on how to proceed? Do I need to pay someone to install again or since it was installed before, just need to buy a system and pretty easy to install ourselves.
Like Tr1 said, talk to or go see the guys at Sounds Good. Site sponsors to boot.

Don't waste your money on paying someone. Very easy to DIY especially if it is already aftermarket. Literally taking the dash trim pieces out, unscrewing the old one, positioning/screwing the new one in, and reinstalling the trim. Should take you only like 30 mins after watching this video - even as a first timer.

You're new, so I'm sure people will cut you some slack. But this kind of post belongs in the mobile audio chat thread.
Like everyone said, the sponsors can help. The guys at Soundsgood are very knowledgeable. But wiring just a head unit is a piece of cake.
Especially since there was an aftermarket system there already; if they already wired a harness, it's really just plug and play.

If you really want an easy job, go and buy another JVC head unit. The double-din units pretty much use the same wiring harness from model to model. Chances are, you won't even need to do rewiring. Pop out old deck, disconnect harness, connect new deck, install. Done.

Saw this ad for boxing day sales. What's the catch? Would these work?
All she needs is am/fm, a screen, and usb to use with ipod. bluetooth optional.
edit: ok image insert won't work for me so link is: imgur.com/sI1M9tN
There's no catch. just make sure you get a double din with all the features you want.
Purchase two packs of butt connectors, aftermarket (brand is METRA usually) wiring harness if the old one is too short to reuse.
Then, you just match or look at the diagram that metra has provided to wire up the harness with your new double din unit. most likely you match colour to colour of the double din unit and metra harness. And ground the unit if necessary.
correct me RS, if i'm wrong. I haven't done a din install for a long time.
