VANCOUVER -- Wednesday will mark the end of the 22-year-old AirCare program in Metro Vancouver.

The B.C. government's attempt to slash air pollution started back in 1992 and saw emissions tested for millions of cars and light trucks.

But the government says the need for the program is dropping, pointing out the failure rate in vehicles fell from 14 per cent to eight per cent in the last seven years because of advances in emission-reduction capabilities.

In a memo to members, Stephanie Smith, the president of the B.C. Government and Service Employees' Union, says the union fought hard to retain the program and union jobs, but the government refused to revisit the decision to cancel Aircare.

About 100 BCGEU members are expected to lose their jobs.
Ryan Patel, a salesman at the used vehicle dealership Legacy Cars, says the program was a nuisance and expense for vehicle owners, but the end of program could mean drivers will delay fixing their vehicles with the threat of failing AirCare now gone.

"The engine light pops on because those (emissions-control devices) are now failing," he says. "If they fail, that means you're now polluting the environment again."

lol my insurance & air care ended on dec 21, got jewed out of $14 lol

320icar 12-29-2014 05:08 PM

It is still your legal responsibility to have your emissions system working properly fyi. If you get pulled over and you have a test pipe, know you could be given a VI still

dn53 12-29-2014 05:28 PM

Who knows, maybe it will be replaced with some sort of vehicle inspection program resulting in more money in shop pockets :lol

Well thats a deal breaker.
Anyone looking for an e36 m3? Can not afford insurance anymore.:okay:

One question however. Who is the fucking retard that does the math for vancity buzz articles? Is the average ICBC bill $7x.00 dollars a month? I can't believe those cunts get paid to write articles(cross post and share a bunch of random tidbits they read on Facebook 3 months earlier, compile it into a toilet full of informational diarrhea and call it an article.) Fucking idiots.

No word on who is going to be scooping up all the Aircare dynos?

SpartanAir 12-30-2014 09:57 AM

I've been curious to discuss this.

I'm really looking forward to seeing what pops up on the Craigslist Good Buys thread this year, especially early in the year. I'm sure there are a ton of people who have been wanting to sell their car but couldn't because they knew it would fail Aircare.

I have a boss who has a older modified Civic Si with CRX engine swap, 4 wheel disc brakes, coilovers etc which he's held off selling because it failed Aircare. Finally will get to in January.

I'm sure this must be the case with some people in the province. What kinds of odd vehicles lie lurking in the garages, parkades, driveways, and barns of BC??? :considered:

I was talking about this with someone over the weekend.
With aircare, all cars that passed was selling for $1000.

With aircare gone, we may see the return of more $500 beaters.

RRxtar 12-30-2014 10:08 AM

^do you even go outside? The rest of BC extends way out passed Langley. And we've never had air care

and them D16A6 swaps are serious business. too powerful for the street

PandaDog 12-30-2014 10:10 AM

My CRX didn't have aircare when I purchased it 2 weeks ago.
Just a few more days :tears:

There's no way it should have gone up that much.

You either had a claim, or tickets, or something.

Mine went up $2.50 a month.

belaud 12-30-2014 12:17 PM

Ohmagosh no more aircare?!?!

RE-Jo 12-30-2014 09:44 PM

You guys have no idea how happy us rotary owners are!

GabAlmighty 12-30-2014 09:45 PM

Been driving for 8 years in the lower mainland, i've rolled my cars through aircare... 3 times hehehe.

That being said, like it's been mentioned i'm just worried they'll bring in periodic mandatory vehicle inspections. Then we all fucked.

My body is ready.

The end of AirCare does have me a little anxious, as those have said above, what if they just replace it with a more strict inspection process that is designed to appease the local shops? I am friends with a few mechanics and they are all somewhat upset that AirCare is gone as it's a huge stream of revenue (aka cash grab) for them, it's hard to think that the BC gov't somehow didn't take this into consideration when cancelling it...
