Futuristic Mercedes-Benz self-driving car has world premiere at CES

Quote:

Mercedes-Benz looks forward to a world after 2030, in which self-driving vehicles will be common and used in day-to-day travel. It will become more than just about getting from Point A to Point B, too. Cars will be "exclusive cocoons" — the redefinition of luxury, Dieter Zietsche, head of Mercedes-Benz cars, said at his keynote at CES.
So the other day, I actually had to step out of my car as someone honked at me pretty badly even though I gave fair warning and signal as I found free parking at Vancouver City Hall. (Note to self: check if turn signal is working after lunch). Will these cars honk at humans? Even worse will people honk at these things?

Self driving + luxury car + Richmond = safer roads :fullofwin:

I would not drive either. I would sleep maybe play some video games or get hammered.

Self driving cars? This Mercedes concept looks uglier than the Google car.

So I jump in my car with the boys. Go have a few 'pops' and 'sandwiches' then it drops us all off at home?

Can't drink on the bus or play street fighter on a 42 inch screen.

I wonder if, in our lifetimes, driving your own car will be a hobby similar to horse riding? It wasn't that long ago where everyone rode horses around, and eventually we'll be looking at cars the same way... The first step is self-driving cars, I assume to be followed by clean, efficient mass transit (not buses!)

I hope not as that would mean we'd be relegated to tracks except for rural areas :/

Pretty sure it would eventually have to!

Lexus should make a self-driving car too... the majority of Lexus RX owners - especially white ones - really shouldn't be driving.

This is pretty cool though, I'm looking forward to the day where I don't have to commute in stop-and-go traffic, rather have the car do the work for me and then resume manual control when the traffic ebbs away...

I know this isn't what "car enthusiasts" want to hear, but self-driving cars takes away the one major cause of traffic accidents, motor vehicle act violations, and all the dangerous/illegal things we equate with driving: the driver. Hell, it could also mean the end of "traffic" as we know it, as the majority of traffic "jams" in the GVRD are caused by A) an old person driving too slow, or B) Mr. Brakey Brakerson that taps his brakes every 20 feet.

Future cars are going to look like living rooms inside.
