VOIP service/app that works with satellite internet connection Might be a long shot but my friends cabin is up near 100 mile and where it is no provider gets service. Currently they have a satellite internet connection and a wired home phone through telus. Basic home phone is like 45 a month there so obviously looking for alternatives. The people around there have told them that the response time with the satellite internet is such that it is too slow to use things like magic jack etc for a cheap alternative to the phone line. Any recommendations? Don't know if anything will work if that is actually the case but don't see why it's so slow as I would think it's the same as any other satellite connection you'd have here? |
The problem with satellite based connections is that they have a horrendous ping. We had those in my family's farm/cottage and even if you somehow hooks a service up, it would not be anything like a regular phone line. Its ping is 500ms+ Unless having a dedicated phone line is crucial, I'd either forget it or check if any cellphone provider serves there and get a cellphone |
*Edit* My bad - They live in an area with zero coverage. But in any case... Spoiler! |
You basically don't have any options.. short of going HAM and packet radio, or put in a bunch of mesh network in between to the closest property that has service coverage. Telus is cheap if you think about all the effort they did just to wire up up to your friend's property. |
