$53 Million Worth of Luxury Cars Destroyed

$53 Million Worth of Luxury Cars Have Probably Been Destroyed in This Ship

Quote:
The Höegh Osaka vehicle carrying cargo ship was deliberately run aground on Sunday after it started listing dangerously off the coast of England. It also happened to be carrying 1,400 vehicles worth an estimated $53 million. The cargo manifest includes Land Rovers, Jaguars, Minis, JCB construction equipment and a single Rolls-Royce Wraith.

It might look like an absolute disaster, but the pilot’s decision to run the ship aground likely prevented it from capsizing, saving the lives of the 25-person crew. It currently sits at a 52-degree angle on a sandbank between South Hampton and the Isle of Wight. The ship was on its way to the Middle East via Germany.

Salvage engineers are currently assessing the damage and looking at ways to right the ship. Though, it could be months before the operation is complete.

As you can probably tell from the photo and video below, 53 degrees is quite an extreme angle. It’s not hard to imagine all those high-end cars slowly crushing each other under their own weight. Representatives from some of the manufacturers say it’s possible many of cars on board could be recovered undamaged, but we won’t know for sure until salvage operations are complete.

I take it cars don't get strapped down when they're put into containers?

1,400 cars/heavy equipment = $53,000,000 / 1,400 = $37,857

Great car, but luxury?

They are certainly strapped down to keep them from shifting or moving from the normal forces from ocean travel. I don't think it's unreasonable at all that the straps are not sufficient to keep them in place for a ship that is literally rolled far enough over that it is closer to being on its side than right side up (52 degrees over).

I remember watching a documentary before on Discovery, regular cars are tied with 1 front and 1 rear anchor points while luxury cars are tied down with 2 on each end. But like lowside said it's really just for normal movement not at the angles this achieved.

Cars are stacked pretty close, just like dominoes one goes they all do.

as a longshoreman i am just wondering at why the ship started listing heavily in the first place... it says the ship was going to capsize if it wasnt for the captain's quick thinking to run it aground... obviously the ship ran into a massive problem be it with ballast pumps or the load of cars breaking loose and shifting the weight of the ship to the side.

That's awful. Now they will be fixing these cars and selling them brand new while completely hiding the fact to the buyers that they are buying a car that was nearly written off.

Quote:
A spokesman for Höegh Autoliners told the BBC that the ship itself has suffered minimal damage, so the insurance company has dodged a big check there. As for the cars onboard, the damaged ones are almost certain to be scrapped rather than salvaged—most automakers refuse to deliver cars that have suffered significant injury before registration. But the undamaged ones are likely to make it to their intended destinations, three weeks late and with a tale to tell.
Depends on the manufacturer, a good manufacturer wouldn't do that.

I have said this before though, when cars are dropped off the ship at annacis there is regularly a few with damage, or they are damaged while awaiting transport sitting in the lots at annacis. There is actually an autobody shop located on Annacis and the cars are repaired without even the dealer knowing about it.

Many years ago I worked at a dealer, and we needed a car for delivery, so I was sent to Annacis to pick it up rather than wait for a truck to get it. When I got to Annacis they gave me the run around for almost 2 hours before finally I found the car hiding away in their little shop, with half the front clip taken apart. Had I not seen that, I doubt the dealer I worked for would have been informed of the damage. Very poor business practice.

Except for that white Range. LOL!!

Buying a new car that has had any previous damage and undeclared to the buyer is fucking bullshit IMO. Why am I paying full new car price for one that doesn't have factory paint anymore? I've personally busted dealerships hiding the fact that they repaired freight damaged vehicles and I've sent cars back. See them do the "Texas two step" once I point out the repair is pretty sad. Shitty work, very noticeable tape lines, etc. It happens way more than the average person thinks.
