Looking for a housewarming gift for xmas for someone that enjoys making espresso lattes / caps / americanos.

Is the go to always the breville espresso + ode or eureka grinders?

Also is making it the above cheaper than a nespresso machine since you don't have to buy $1/pods.

TOS'd 12-22-2022 09:07 PM

What are they currently using to make espresso lattes / caps / americanos?

Ode isn’t great for espresso FYI. You have to swap the burrs out to make it work.

Sweet Jesus, I need one of these. :sweetjesus:

Many of the lever machines' benefits have basically been replicated on espresso machines with variable flow control. I have contemplated with the idea of getting a lever machine while shopping for a new espresso machine. But after several tries, I think it's more of a mechanical eye candy than anything else.

And for commercial use, it's a pain vs. flipping a knob.

So I have never drank a cup of coffee in my entire life……. But my gf does and she insists she doesn’t care about flavour which just seems to me like she’s never tried anything decent.

She currently keeps buying the same low acidity Nabob medium roast breakfast blend “mellow, citrus and earthy” it says… and she says she is happy with it. I would like to switch it out for something else local and see if she notices / see if it blows her mind. Has to be already ground, no grinder here.

Any suggestions gentlemen?

I died when I read Nabob.

There is no help.

You need to try a classic lever and spring machine. The flavour profile is unique. I haven't switched back to a modern machine since.

Most roasters give you the option of buying a bag of coffee pre-grounded when checking out.

My go-to is always Moja

Although the Moja in the green/grey bag I usually get is moreso chocolate/caramel/nut notes as opposed to the citrus type she’s drinking now. But Moja is always top notch

Thank you!! I took a look at their site... seems like the "Costa Rica" blend is exactly what I am looking for.

Take her to the shop to try it first before buying it haha good date spot

When you buy a bag, you’ll get a free coffee. Each location uses a different blend for their house blends so you might as well try an americano as your free coffee while there.

Although if you don’t drink coffee you probably don’t know any better lol

Badhobz 01-11-2023 07:36 AM

whats wrong with Nescafe instant coffee!? (i think thats the slop they serve us at the office) :fuckyea:

Hondaracer 01-11-2023 07:42 AM

Those Nescafé instant creama coffee are actually not bad in a pinch

You can go with me and have the free coffee :hay:

68style 01-11-2023 08:24 AM

Will circle back to you on this if I'm ever in the market of another machine.

@68style
I think the best option would be for her to try some drip/pourover coffee with light to light-medium roasts.

You can usually find some decent options even in supermarket like Safeway. Of course, being a grocery coffee, it won't be incredible. Nevertheless, it should be pretty good.

The reason for recommending this is that light roasted coffee is because the flavour profile would the the complete opposite of what she can find from something like a Nabob. It's going to be more fruity with a lot of layers of flavours or more suave than the usually intense coffee usually derived from a cup of Nabob.

unit 01-11-2023 01:41 PM

i just bought my parents a bonavita 8 cup machine.
its just a nice drip machine. right now my mom does pour over, as in uses a filter and cone, what people did before 'pour over' existed.
i was surprised that she wanted to take it up a notch.
they even want to take my baratza encore and start grinding fresh.
maybe they started reading this thread or something, idk what came over them.

SkinnyPupp 01-11-2023 01:44 PM

I wouldn't buy her coffee that is the opposite of what she's drinking. I'd get something similar to what she already likes, but really fresh and really good. I'm sure Vancouver has some great roasteries that will have something perfect. Buy a small bag if you're getting pre-ground

Also if she doesn't like it, just let her enjoy her Nabob. To each their own!

68style 01-11-2023 01:46 PM

Yah I do not want to go outside her flavour profile, the place Hondaracer suggested has one that almost exactly matches the description.

I am also taking heed of hehe's comments as well. Maybe try a bit of both!
