Yah that Level Ground coffee is not the best. Fine if you don't really care about flavour.

They used to carry a medium roast Level Ground that was much better, but I haven't seen it in a long time.

Yep no go. Much better Costco Coffee available 😀

Mr.Money 07-07-2024 11:17 AM

anyone try grocery store kicking horse- GRIZZLY CLAW blend? for fresh beans?

https://www.kickinghorsecoffee.com/c...41644712853653

not bad at all for a dark roast. not overly done like French roast where the bean is super oily on the surface with it sticking to your Coffee Grinder.... nothing wrong with that. but the longer the oil is exposed to air its gonna expire faster..aka probably a nasty sour taste coffee if u left it long enough.

it's definitely a level better than K-cup Tim Hortons medium roast blend.

If that’s the bar.. I’ll stick to water? lol

Costco House Blend update. Still super oily. I’m sure it will clog my grinder. Tossed it in anyway in a single wall portafilter and it actually poured a pretty consistent shot without any adjustments (I could likely go for a slightly finer grinder for the ultimate shot this morning). Flavour profile isn’t exciting, but it’s honestly not bad. Comparable to something you’d get from Bean around the world or Blenz.

More oil than a teenager's face. It's glistening!

One cup, please :)

next MeAt at hud 91gt's house for oily kirkland coffees

Just finished the 2.2kg Costco House Blend, stopped in and decided to try the Level Pround Peruvian Medium roast. Used my intuition, flicked my fingers and poured another perfect shot first try (not sure when I became a true barista lol).

Look beautiful, tastes like cat piss. lol. I actually prefer the house blend. It’s actually very similar tasting (not as robust), but the aftertaste has a hint of cat piss lol. Almost feels over extracted but it wasn’t.

i've seriously never heard of 'toasted peanut' as a tasting note lol

bcrdukes 08-16-2024 07:53 AM

bro that blonding...

Looking at the shot, looks like you pulled it for too long. I can't tell how much volume there is there's a chance in salvaging the shot if you cut it off sooner and lower the volume.

hud 91gt 08-16-2024 08:01 AM

That’s an americano. There is a cup of water poured in on the edge which caused the “blinding”. The shot was perfect, with a hint of speckle. It was beautiful.

roastpuff 08-16-2024 08:31 AM

The stuff sold in Costco isn't fresh enough for espresso IMHO. What ratio/time did you get out of it?

hud 91gt 08-16-2024 09:19 AM

The Breville doesn’t have a huge amount of adjustability. If you get the grind right, and the proper amount you get a beautiful syrupy consistent pour that runs about 25-30 seconds. If its wrong it’ll either run through quicker or longer. You’ve got adjustments for amount of grind and size, preset pressure and I assume amount of water.

If your shot is too compact/dense you get an inconsistent shot like a regular manual machine would. If it’s not dense enough it’s runs through like water. The time it pours is preset one what I assume is based on a pre calculated amount of water, and you adjust via grind to get the consistency of the pour correct which corresponds to length of time.

hud 91gt 08-16-2024 03:23 PM

Poured an afternoon shot. This one the grind was slightly fine, and the pour was dripping a little (vs nice and consistent). Overdone, but not awful.

For those who have a Nespresso machine………….

Got an email from Nespresso about their newest pod for the Vertuo. It’s called No. 20. Apparently 20 years in the making. I’m at the Nespresso Boutique in Metrotown, ATM. Tried it out. Cot Dam, it’s so different. Expensive (like almost 3X the cost of other pods). So expensive 5 pods per sleeve as opposed to the usual 10.

The pods are nestled in a box and looks sexy as hell. Yeah, coffee snobs would scoff at this, but I don’t give a flying fuck what other snobs say.

EDIT: corrected link to show Vertuo pods and ones from this country and not Slovakia, jbol...........

Our Nespresso machine broke within 1 year of using it. Lol

Went to Nemesis for the first time on the weekend. Their baked goods and breakfast sandwhiches were quite good

Ordered an iced latte, was very good quite nutty, should have asked which beans they used for it. Presumably their espresso blend. However purchased a bag as we needed coffee and made an americano this morning, much more acidic with stone fruit flavours etc. as it’s said on the box, so I’m thinking it might be a different blend

These fucking like half pound bags of coffee for $20+ are getting crazy though, no one has good enough coffee at these places to charge $20 for half a pound

unit 09-09-2024 01:48 PM

on the flip side of that argument, $30/250g coffee is sort of like top shelf stuff with the exception of the rare stuff that can be a lot more. if you equate that to something like booze, it's cheap. what other high end consumable costs $3 when made at home? people pay $2-3 for basic drip at starbucks all the time.

Hondaracer 09-09-2024 01:56 PM

Well my argument would be you get better quality stuff across the board at actual roasters like Moja, Argo, etc. for lower prices. Stuff roasted on-site, in house

The price at places like Nemsis seem to be tied to how trendy they are as opposed to the quality of their coffee. Not saying I simply don’t have the option to just not buy their coffee, but for, what I taste, is an inferior product to most they are charging 25%+ more for less coffee

unit 09-09-2024 02:01 PM

im pretty sure nemesis also roasts their own? their prices are in line with what the industry is charging for single origin stuff these days. if you like moja better then more power to you. $17.50/400g is an absolute bargain.

hud 91gt 09-09-2024 02:42 PM

It’s not too late to convert to Costco Coffee ;)

SkinnyPupp 09-09-2024 03:15 PM

Those Nespresso machines don't actually brew coffee, right? Those pods just contain some instant coffee, and the machine adds hot water to it for you.

unit 09-09-2024 04:22 PM

they actually do brew coffee. if you open a pod after the process there are grounds inside, it's not just dissolved into your brew.
