I use a metal Aeropress filter. I've been using it literally every day (sometimes twice!) for like 5 years now, and it's just as good as when I bought it. Highly recommended if just for the convenience.

It's best if you prefer a 'heavier' brew, as it will let through more oils compared to paper filters. I find it perfect for ice coffee (23g coffee, usually a dark roast, medium-fine grind, 190g water, upside down brew 4 minutes, add 80g ice, stir that until melted then a couple more big ice cubes)

^ I have a few friends that went with the metal filters and they all didn't like it. I personally haven't tried.

SkinnyPupp 03-16-2025 04:28 PM

You really have to like a 'heavier' french press style brew. If you're going for a lighter flavour, then yeah definitely use a filter (or two!)

Jason00S2000 03-16-2025 07:16 PM

I drink instant powered coffee, poured from hot water from the tap, mixed with my finger, and then 2 minutes later I'm pooping and then showering in the morning.

I prefer the paper, but I'll settle for not having to buy paper.

Lots of fine grind settling at the bottom

Jason, coffee enemas aren't a normal everyday thing.

Recently I quit smoking weed because I'm determined to get rich again, and smoking, while highly enjoyable and relaxing, puts a wet towel on the fires of ambition. It also helped me make it through COVID without totally losing my mind.

I got some on order, will let you guys know how it is!

Tried Tim Hortons latte this morning.

It's somehow worse than regular coffee. There's something very machine oil about the drink. It's like they use the drink itself for gear lube. Which if true, I'm not even mad that's actually a really cool idea.

GLOW 03-18-2025 08:26 AM

i've been trying to ween off of my nespresso machines (yes i have more than 1 lol) and been using my stovetop moka

takes a bit more time to prep and clean but it's kind of nice once you get used to it. hard to find flavoured decaf grinds though

i had vanilla hazelnut but after i used it up i couldn't find stock again

i've been going to timmy's and just getting a cafe mocha about once a week.
not terrible but their pricing is so random, some days i get charged a coffee some i get charged $1 more

https://aeropress.com/products/aerop...rol-filter-cap

I got the flow control cap for Xmas and I really like using it. I was an upside down brewer before but I'm back to normal with the cap and I like how it brews (my guests have also commented that they like it better).

re: steel filter - I can't get used to it as I like discarding everything into my compost.

EvoFire 03-18-2025 10:36 AM

Hit up matchstick this morning and got my filters and a bag of coffee since I was out.

Klondike 03-18-2025 11:01 PM

I have a steel mesh filter for my aliexpress knockoff aeropress.

The convenience of not having to use pre-cut paper filters, outweigh the negatives. I'm a coffee noob so I never noticed the oily-ness of running a metal filter.

Finally bought a bag of robusta beans to make cà phê sữa đá, but it's gonna be a while before I can get to it. Family keeps buying coffee even though we've got enough beans to start a coffee shop :lol

I still have half a bag of beans from the Philippines that I've been rationing.

RabidRat 03-20-2025 07:49 AM

Does anyone know where you can buy whole bean McDonalds coffee?

I really like this stuff and want to see what happens when I put it through an espresso machine lol.

GLOW 03-20-2025 08:17 AM

have you tried costco? i swear i went down their big bag coffee isle and it was all whole beans (i don't have a grinder)

i thought i saw starbucks and mcafe and others

unit 03-20-2025 08:21 AM

pretty sure you can get it at places like safe on foods, safeway, london drugs, etc..
for fast food drip coffee i actually dont mind mcdonalds either and always wondered what it would taste like if you used a v60 with it or something.

Save-Ons has it if you don't want to fight the Costco parking/crowd.

The Still Creek Costco only has ground McDonald's - I bet this varies store to store though. Can probably ask your Costco to look into stocking whole bean.

Like RabidRat I actually don't mind McDonald's coffee. Maybe I just have super low standards but I'm fine drinking that and A&W coffee in a pinch so I'm curious how whole bean McDonald's tastes.

bcrdukes 03-31-2025 08:02 AM

I feel you guys are being hard on yourselves. :p

The coffee quality from A&W and Mcdonald's is actually not bad. They've done a good job roasting it with consistency year over year, and have shifted more towards the centre from the usual dark roasted coffees you get from the West Coast (You can thank Starbucks for that.) :D

Re: A&W - I managed to try the new coffee they use from Pret a Manger and it's not bad!

Dbone 03-31-2025 08:34 AM

A&W use Pret coffee? I had no idea. Hopefully better than the Costa Coffee you got from Shell.

how's the aliexpress knockoff aeropress? i was thinking of getting one.

I got a bean brinder off there and waiting for delivery to use with my moka pot.
not sure if it's an original or knockoff, but it's a bang for buck one that was reviewed by james hoffman

^ my family hates the aero press.
I hate it cause it's plastic... FFS.... they think plastic will leech and be bad for body... ghezzzz.

EvoFire 03-31-2025 09:09 AM

Shit I've been drinking plastic in my coffee for the last 5 years. And my whole life considering I'm not bougie enough to use natural bristle toothbrushes :lol

London Drugs has whole bean version of this I think. Or Sobeys etc should have it too?

to be fair it does leech, but whether or not that amount is actually harmful is debatable. the glass aeropress is like $200 so there's always that lol.
