993TT Best Example of Car as an Investment?

Trolling Autotrader Ads and found this gem:

1997 Porsche 911 Turbo for $295,000 in Mont-Royal | autoTRADER.ca

Whats the rhyme or reason for these cars appreciating as high as they are right now? I don't understand this particular trend. AFAIK the 993TT wasn't a limited produced model. Didn't they make a 993TT S model? (God knows how expensive that model is compared to normal TT)

You could buy any of the following used for $295,000
- Ferrari 458
- Mclaren MP4-C
- Mercedes SLS
- Gallardo LP570-4 Superleggera

They haven't appreciated that much, the guy selling it is just on crack.

meme405 01-23-2015 08:26 AM

And I could list my car for 300k as well, does not mean its worth that much.

List price is indicative of nothing, its all about what the car actually sells for, and that thing ain't worth $295k...

are you kidding me?

less than 4 years ago a 993TT was in the 45-50 range...

Last year my friend bought a 993TT local with 35k clicks for 100k....

few months ago the same friend bought a 993TT with 2xk clicks for 198.

Don't get me wrong they dont usually go for that price but it sure is damn hard to find a 993TT for under 100k now...

Any vehicle is worth what someone is willing to pay. The market has gone bananas on these things so it's no surprise that the asking prices are quite high.

100k CAD sounds reasonable, but 100 to 300k is a big gap...

Price is what someone's willing to pay, but I would say your buddy who bought for 198 paid well above market value.

Any aircooled Porsche's asking price is based on the basic economic principle of supply vs. demand. It also boils down to a notion of "How much do I want this and how much am I willing to pay?"

Remember, the 993 was near the end of Porsche and also the last straw before their demise. They were unable to produce and sell enough cars as the years went by until the Boxster, 996, and Cayanne saved them. Porsche has had their fair share of dark days.

The price has definitely ballooned on these things, and one in what appears to be as nice a shape and low a mileage as the one in the advertisement would definitely deserve a premium.

But there is no way in hell the price on these has gone from 50k to 300k in 4 years; 100k-150k yeah probably, but 300k is just insane.

Again though, totally dependant on what someone is willing to buy it for, but as of now, that list price just seems out to lunch.

bumsuck 01-23-2015 10:22 AM

Wow. That much for a TT? Are TTS's even in that price range?

dhari 01-23-2015 10:33 AM

Look at how much Ferrari 360 Challenge Stradale's are selling for now compared to 2 years ago. $125k Jan2013 vs low/mid$200k(depending on options and miles)

For sure not 300k range for a TT thats RS category, but 180 - 200k category has been seen more than 5x this year.

My buddy who recently bought the 200k one was looking for a local car, low k's and color. That's why its worth that much but seeing these hover around 130k is easily possible now.

My buddy who bought the 200k one also own 4 other TT's and each one the price is higher and higher. He also has a fairshare of other aircooled and all of them the price has shot up.

He even agrees paying 200k is far too much than he should be he wanted that combo bad.

If you're looking at a decent TT you can find one for 120k-130k or so.

I was offered to buy a 993C4S for 45k 2 years ago.. slept on that and was not able to buy one unless I am willing to pay high now... which is around the 75-85k range.

by the way.....

my "are you kidding me" was against the "They haven't appreciated that much," not against the 300k is not worth it.

at 300k I am buying an RS

And My "they haven't appreciated that much" meant "they haven't appreciated to $300k much" :p

I'm pretty sure the best examples of car investment are the people who bought 427 cobras for 10k back in the 60s. The 993 WAS a good investment. That ship has sailed, however there are hundreds of cars that have appreciated far greater then the 993 turbo. Even a 930 has had a similar appreciation in the same time frame if we are talking %. Unfortunately, when I wanted to buy one my money was tied up in a condo I wasn't living in, and now I want to jump off of the lions gate bridge because of that.

trollguy 01-23-2015 12:42 PM

hmmm. i'm pretty sure 993TT's 4-5 yrs ago were much higher than the 45-50 range... (as far as i can rememberat least)

boostfever 01-23-2015 12:58 PM

^ I agree. Vale46Rossi is exaggerating quite a bit.

I can find you newspaper ads selling classic 60's Ferraris for 5 or 6 grand. :ohgodwhy:

westopher 01-23-2015 01:02 PM

There might have been an example of a high milage 993tt going for around 50k when the seller was in the shits in the midst of the economic collapse, but I'm sure it wasn't the norm.

mb_ 01-23-2015 02:01 PM

Told myself I'd own a 993 TT when they were around 50k. Might have to settle for a 996 TT :alone: :okay:

trollguy 01-23-2015 02:09 PM

thanks to jalopnik, 996TT prices may be slowly rising..

so better get on this one 996 TWIN TURBO PORSCHE,BLACK,6SPD, UPDATED TO 600 HP

$49k for an 01! doesnt seem questionable or anything..

TouringTeg 01-23-2015 06:28 PM

993 values is one of my favourite topics. I will try to keep my post to the point.

Vale: Did your friend buy the yellow 993 TT from Weissach last year? That was a beautiful car. I agree most 993 TT are over 100k now.

I bought a 993 C4S this time last year. It's a driver though and is not worth the numbers thrown around in this thread. Despite the growing value and falling CDN dollar I have no plans to sell it. Just installed a pink giraffe print baby seat for my 6 month old. :smug:

That TT posted should have the original wheels if they want to have a hope of getting that price. Buyers/collectors want all original. It is obviously priced for a US buyer.

993 TT S is even more nuts. New record listing price: $695,000 USD. Limited edition Porsche are skyrocketing even more than the TT. See: RS, RSA, GT3 RS/4.0, GT
1997 Porsche 911 Turbo S For Sale - 1050743 - duPont REGISTRY

For my money I would rather keep my C4S and get this 2011 GT3 RS Riveria blue, audio system delete.

Regarding 996 TT. They have been steadily increase in value over the past couple years after bottoming out. They are still good value. Check out this TT at Weissach on Techart Dayonas.

I know of 3 people who purchased it in the entry 48-50 range!

They are happy as hell now but they were higher mileage than all of the 100k ones we see now.

Even the summer of 2013, I traveled to victoria to purchase a local vancouver 993TT for my friend at 67k.

westopher 01-26-2015 08:43 AM

That's wild. I wish I had money a few years ago.

trollguy 01-26-2015 08:48 AM

that is crazy. 48-50 range... so jelly!!

punkwax 01-26-2015 10:51 AM

Nope.
