Points finishes for both McLaren/Honda cars, Alonso (5th) and Button (9th) :ahwow: IMO most exciting race of the year

HonestTea 07-28-2015 03:42 AM

This was probably the best race of the season(so far)! A great start by the two Ferrari's made this a great race. I hope the Ferrari's can keep up with the brilliant starts and Merc to be dropping the ball, so it will make future races entertaining ;)

They really put in a show for Jules and everyone showed their respects to Jules and his family.

Can't wait for Monza/Spa!

Not as exciting as the Hungarian and British GP for sure but it was pretty decent.

I'm not a huge fan of Vettel, but he does have the right to voice his displeasure. Pirelli stated that the tires are safe up to 40 laps and after 30 or so laps (75% of what Pirelli considered safe) the tire disintegrates in such a spectacular fashion.

While on the topic of tires, I was surprised that Bottas was putting up decent lap times with the mismatched tires!

40? i thought they said 22 laps

Quote:

In a clearly provocative statement sent out on Sunday evening, Pirelli said: “Since November 2013, Pirelli requested that there should be rules to govern the maximum number of laps that can be driven on the same set of tyres, among other parameters to do with correct tyre usage.

“This request was not accepted. The proposal put forward a maximum distance equivalent to 50% of the grand prix distance for the prime tyre and 30% for the option.

"These conditions, if applied today at Spa, would have limited the maximum number of laps on the medium compound to 22.”

At the post race interview, Paul Hembery said that he expected that most of the team would be 2 or 3 stopping during the race. He also noted that the wear life is around 40 laps.

Based on McLaren's qualifying performance, Arai, Honda's F1 boss.. seems to be smoking some weird stuff!

The engine may actually be 25 hp more than Renault's ICE, but I think the main issue with Honda's PU is the ERS deployment and recharge mapping. When the ERS cannot recharge the battery fast enough, the car loses the 160hp electrical power it desperately needs to keep up.

With Spa and Monza being both power circuits, the McHondas are basically always down on power because they've depleted the battery charge long before they're finished with the DRS straights and failed to charge back up in subsequent laps, hence a downward spiral of poor performance.

Circuits like Singapore will help McHonda because low power emphasis and high down force for the slow corners help with recharging. (These V6T era cars have about 1.5G of deceleration from lift and coast alone due to aero and MGU-K according to Racecar Engineering)

The lack of usable power throughout the circuit means they had to compensate with aero and chassis. I wonder if this was the reason why the T1 nose returned in Monza to further cut downforce that the short nose could otherwise generate...

I considered going to Singapore GP last year via HK. Ultimately I opted not to because I concluded the track layout doesn't really offer the greatest racing views that I'd be looking for. Nothing but straights and 90 degree turns. On the other hand, the surrounding concerts are pretty cool, no question. If you do go for it, I suggest going for tickets at the entrance to turn one, giving you a view of the front straight, turn 1 and pit lane exit. Availability may be tough however at this point.

I haven't researched it very much but Suzuka offers better views of racing I believe, however one thing to note is getting to/from the circuit can be an ordeal given its location in the countryside as opposed to Singapore's dt location. Japan also can be a pricey country to visit, especially with the exchange rates at the moment. Anyways, I decided to save the cash and wait for the opportunity to visit one of the traditional European circuits.

Ive decided on Singapore! :) mainly because according to expedia, there are like 0 hotels available during the GP in Japan, without a 2hr train ride that is, the same goes for race tickets :/

with singapore, there are plenty of hotel options still available as well as tickets (turn 2 or turn 3) turn 2 supposedly has the best views but turn 3 offers a padded seat and free meals (2 meals 2 snacks, for each day) but the view for turn 3 seems a bit awkward

StylinRed 09-07-2015 07:19 PM

so ive booked everything! singapore turn 2 it is (turn 3 premium was sold out by the time i decided on everything!)

flying taiwan's eva air, never flew them before, everyone else doesn't work with the schedule, from the photos/videos i've seen they seem a bit rickety :/ anyone fly with them before?

StylinRed 09-16-2015 08:16 PM

omw tonight and Singapore is smog ridden, in the 'unhealthy' range -_-

HonestTea 09-16-2015 09:23 PM

Safe travels StylinRed and take lots of pictures!

Eff-1 09-16-2015 11:17 PM

Have a great time. EVA is a decent airline. I wouldn't worry about it!

Jealous!
