WhatsApp calling ***Andriod ONLY***

I just found out there is whatsapp calling.

All you need is the latest version of whatsapp and someone that already has the feature to call you.

It's true, it's been available for the past few weeks. Available on Blackberry too.

tiger_handheld 03-24-2015 08:28 PM

So whats app is becoming liek Line?

SkinnyPupp 03-24-2015 08:50 PM

Pretty much all messenger apps have calling. Facebook Messenger has it too

SoNaRWaVe 03-24-2015 11:39 PM

so this needs an invite now? i am sure it will go public sooner or later.

Traum 03-25-2015 01:16 AM

So it sounds like it's Whatsapp calling another Whatsapp only?

If that's the case, then the voice calling from Google Hangout would still absolutely kick its a$$. Free calls to anywhere, land line or otherwise across North America. It even works on cellular data only.

AzNightmare 03-25-2015 11:05 AM

lol... but I never talk on the phone anymore.

FerrariEnzo 03-25-2015 07:04 PM

wifi calling?

You are confusing that with Google Voice, which is not available in Canada. Google Voice is the thing that gives you a personalized phone number.

With Google Hangout (the voice call app), it's a separate download from Google Play Store. When you use it to call someone, I think it shows up either as a blocked/private number, or it shows a US number on caller ID. On my phone, I can make this Google Hangout call when my phone is on WiFi, or when my phone is on cellular data. From experience, the call quality is noticeably worse when I make the call on cellular data. But hey, it still works well enough, and I can make calls throughout North America, be it landlines or cell phones, or whatever, all for free.

:fuckyea:

note: Obviously, if you exceed your mobile data plan quotas, then you'd get charged for that.

...Except when I use Hangout, none of my friends or family answer because they think I'm some telemarketer callng from a US number lol...

With my Nexus 5 I've gone data only with Fido (5GB $35) for this reason. Can't justify a $30 voiceplan when I rarely call. Ported my old number to Fongo for $25 (one time fee), and Fongo (like Hangout but with a callable number) has worked well enough for me as long as I'm on a minimum of 3G speeds.

If in an emergency, Fido's data only plans allow calls for $1/minute. Calls to 911 might be free.

Just randomly got this update tonight (I didn't get an invite), it just automatically appeared in my whatsapp. Did anyone else get this feature?

SoNaRWaVe 03-31-2015 01:47 AM

yep happened here tonight as well.

Kilinim 03-31-2015 05:38 AM

I got it too

blkgsr 03-31-2015 08:44 AM

ya just noticed it as well...

so google hangout is basically like skype but you don't have to pay....sweet. I used skype while i was travelling last year and it was great (when the wifi was decent). I'll definitely change to google if it's free

Ya, sorry. Should have been more clear -- you need to separately download the Hangout Dialer app. But once it is installed, it is integrated right back into the regular Google Hangout app.

shenmecar 04-01-2015 10:19 AM

they also launched a web client that syncs to your phone.

mr_chin 04-03-2015 11:14 AM

So this uses your data/wifi to make calls?

TOS'd 04-03-2015 11:21 AM
