Those $10/day ads typically apply to economy cars like the Nissan Versa for the weekend only. If you're lucky, you'll get bumped up to a Hyundai Sonata if they run out of the tiny cars.
The fun cars like the Mustang and Camaro typically go for around $60/day. Not sure if it's the V8 or V6 though.
If cats always land on their feet, and toast always lands butter side down, what would happen if you strapped burnt toast to the back of a cat and dropped it?
I went up to a cute chick and asked her if she'd let me take a photo of her for $30 she slapped me, she said to me that "I AIN'T A WHORE!"
But other than that I have seen every car on display in DTP just by cruising about in Richmond, thank you very much for collecting them together and get someone to sing a cover for "fuck you".
OH FUCK YOU OH OH OOOOH~

Here are the rental numbers. Regardless if I'm renting or buying, the cost to me is only 12.5%. Sorry I forgot to mention this number earlier.
eg.
-buy car for 15k
-sell for 12k in 2 months (20% loss)
-12% tax is $1800
-$3000 for car insurance, inspection, miscellaneous, brakes, tires, timing belt, maintenance etc. I doubt it will be that high. Probably around $1000-$2000 if I get a used car with good service records.
I'm looking at forking out $975 after buying/selling since I'm only paying 12.5%. If I do car rental, it is a lot cheaper since I only have to pay 12.5% but we can't get the car we want. A bmw rental will cost at least 19k.
With buying used, I can look at Infiniti G35, BMW 325CI, Mustang, mini cooper, BMW 328xi, mazda rx8, etc. A ton of car choices out there.

in alberta I rented a nissan micra from rent a wreck and that was $450 a month. I upgraded to a hyundai sonata because it had winter tires but that was $750 a month. Another time I rented a dodge caliber and put 3000 kms within 2 weeks. he charged me extra $50 for the kms but that car already had 160k on it.
if you rent in the states there are $10 deals out of california but that's just certain weekdays. weekends jump back to normal rates. I rented an accord for one day at that price.
One thing to note, if you do rent be sure to rent from a company that has locations in all the areas you'll be driving so you can swap the car out easily if you have any problems.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I think all of those cars are considered to be finicky about their maintenance so you'd want to have someone own it and drive it for a while to see what comes up first.
That said, I've been told you can pick up an RX8 with a blown motor for around $2500, and a new crate motor from Mazda for $3000. That would probably be your best option if you or someone you know has the skills to swap the engine as you then have a brand new one and don't have to worry about the previous owner.

If you want to minimize your chances of breakdowns, stop going for used BMWs or Minis. At this price range and mileage they all need a bit of work done.
toyota all the way! esp for those long endurance drives. you could buy a beater corolla or tercel and just beat the shit out of it then write it off after.

Why the hell are you buying the LDW from the rental company?
Just use your credit card with coverage (assuming you have one) for free........ or worst case scenario like mentioned above, ICBC sells rental car insurance.

at those rental prices you'd be better off finding a low rated 24 month lease

CC's coverage usually carries a lot more limitation and it's more complicated.
I'd suggest going the ICBC route since it's cheap enough.

Inb4 buys 328xi, waterpump fails halfway.
I wouldn't buy an E9x for a road trip. Older BMWS (E34, E36, e30) or Mercs are pretty solid if the Achilles heels have been taken care of beforehand. At this point, they cost almost nothing to buy and not much to fix if he's not fussy about the exterior.
He could rent a modern Camry and have a completely lifeless experience on the road, or he could do something fun and drive a car that's comfortable and has road feel. If he's looking at BMWS or other Euro cars, it sounds like he wants something fun to drive. I guess it depends on what his priorities are for the trip.

The same problem persists with e34 and the like, you have no idea how the previous owner treated it and you are taking it for a 20k road trip.
I have issues about buying a used car and immediately going on a long road trip, regardless of make and model. Buying european Just exacerbates it.
