Looking to get a 1/2 ton pick up

The following are my options

2015 F150 Lariat 4x4 supercrew 3.5 v6 ecoboost with 502A package and tech package

OR

2015 Ram 1500 Laramie 4x4 crewcab with the new ecodiesel and all the bells and whistles

Should I stick with the petro engine or go with the diesel?

The F150 with the options are slightly more than the Ram. Mostly using the truck for light duty hauling and daily driving to and from work.

It would really boil down to personal preference. Perhaps the diesel will retain it's value better than the gas engine Ford? Hard to say as the Eco-Diesel is new to the brand. Is it a Cummins engine? Diesel should offer better towing/hauling power, last longer and offer slightly lower fuel costs so I'd probably say go Dodge. I dislike Ford as I've seen/had lots of issues with them. All that Sync bs and electronics have caused problems in my mom's 2012 Edge Sport. That thing is in the shop quite frequently for bullshit problems.

I'd say Taco all day long(my absolute favorite truck) but they don't compare to a full size half ton in terms of interior cabin space among other things.

The diesel will probably retain value better, but it will tow less than the Ford as it is not the Cummins diesel but a VM Motori 3.0L V6 diesel (240hp/420lb-ft). The 3.0L Eco-Diesel Ram is rated for 8200lbs max, more like 7400lbs in the configuration you described, and the Ford F-150 with the 3.5EB motor will do over 9000 easy. 11,000lbs with the right packages.

OP, make sure to test drive the diesel Ram as it drives a lot different than a gas engine. It's very relaxed and not as responsive as a gas engine, takes a bit to build up speed. Also, how long is your commute? It won't warm up as fast as a gas engine so if it's quite short your fuel savings won't be realized over the gas engine. In fact, if you don't need the towing I'd think about the 2.7L V6 EcoBoost as it doesn't seem to give up much power/speed to the bigger EcoBoost engine and has better fuel economy.

I recently thought hard and long about a truck (see my thread here: http://www.revscene.net/forums/70146...ghlight=diesel) but ended up waiting because I'd like to see the 2015 aluminium F-150 with the new transmissions that Ford is cooking up to replace the 6-speed. Ecoboost with a 8-speed or a 9-speed is going to be a winner.

The Dodge Ram interior is nicer, IMO, but the Ford has more space. The new 2015 Ford has some nice features that you can't get on the Ram, and vice versa. It makes it a hard choice!

Don't forget 2015 F150 will have the typical shake down issues.

Even when there is a new transmission, I will wait a while so they can fix the bugs.

Also depending on whether you are financing. I would imagine FCA will have better offer now F150 is starting to get some press.

Thanks for everyone's input. Haven't driven the ram yet, drove the 3.5ecoboost f150 and that thing haul ass, and the steering feel I quite like.
Ford has 4500 rebate plus I got Costco so I get another 1000, so total is 5500 off plus maybe some haggling.
I have to drive the diesel ram to see.

FWIW, Lemon-Aid indicated the EcoBoost engine can be problematic including complete loss of power for several seconds in rare circumstances.

That's because Ridgeline's are pieces of shit.

The diesel only makes sense if you're doing longer drives, otherwise as has been said your fuel savings will disappear if the engine doesn't get warm.

Taco's are nice trucks, but, they are HORRENDOUS on gas especially when towing. High-strung V6's in most cases are actually worse than a V8 because you have to give them more pedal to get the truck moving. I would get a V6 only if you intend on med/light loads in the bed. Towing anything of significance will hurt vs a V8.

for long drives (more than 150km trip), i'd take the diesel. if doing things around town, anything gas should be enough.

I have driven each 1/2 ton truck out there to quite an extent other than the Nissan Titan. I would rank them in this order:

1. GMC Sierra
2. Ram
3. Ford F-150
4. Toyota Tundra (Tacoma is useless in my opinion, may as well buy a small SUV)
5. Nissan Titan

I have put on about:
250,000 kms on Sierras (Drove the 5.3 and 6.2 engines, both 6 speed autos)
125,000 kms on F-150s (Drove the 5.4, 5.0, and mostly the 3.5 Eco-boost)
75,000kms on a Ram 1500 (Drove only the 5.7 Hemi)
50,000km on a Tundra (Drove the 5.7)
~5,000km on a Titan

90% of my driving was on highways around the Grande Prairie and Fort McMurray areas. 9% was on well groomed dirt roads. About 1% was on shit rough 'Oil' roads.

What I liked about the Sierra is that it was the most comfortable on the highway. Felt the quietest and smoothest (Each truck had the same tires, Yoko Geolander AT/S). The Ram had the second nicest ride on the highway. They all felt about the same on the dirt roads. On the shitty roads though, is where the F-150 felt the best. I think the suspension probably has the most travel or some shit, either way, was the most stable on shit roads. The mileage I got was best on the 5.3 Sierra and the 3.5 Ecoboost. The Toyota and Ram were about the same but quite a bit worse than the others. The Titan got like 4 meters per gallon, was really bad. I would assume the Ecoboost would get the best mileage in town but I could never really get enough time to test that.

The interiors of them for me rank from the Ram > Sierra > Tundra > F-150 > Titan. The Sierra and F-150 had the best microphones for the bluetooth inside. People could always tell I was on bluetooth while driving the Tundra and Ram.

Each truck was more than capable of towing trailers without really feeling them too much. The only problem I find is a 1/2 ton's brakes don't quite hold up to how well they tow, if you know what I'm say. I'd keep the trailers light, if they aren't, I would upgrade to a 1 ton or rent one when you need to haul. I've seen quite a few trucks off the road due to hauling trailers and loads that are too heavy for the truck to handle.

The thing I can't speak on is how these trucks 'haul ass' as I don't treat them like sports cars. It's a fucking truck. Don't be that guy. Don't be that douche truck driver squealing tires and thinking you can drive fast in the snow because you think you can stop on a dime. See way too many of those guys up in Fort Mac and even when I'm back in Vancouver. Guys in trucks down there are borderline retarded thinking 2fast 2furious.

RAM is great and the interior > Ford but the ecodiesel is useless in city driving and the payload is tiny.

I said F150 only because that was the one I would choose to drive out of the two options he gave.

Otherwise Sierra all the way.

It's funny because I was renting a truck in Edmonton during the week for the last 5 weeks.

First week I had a ram, it was fine, hemi 5.7, a truck I actually owned at one point so it was familiar. Second week I had the new F150, felt rock solid, but didn't like the highway runs out here in edmonton. The 3rd week I was in a sierra 1/2 ton with the 5.3, and it was nice just being back in my own truck. It was like returning home when I got in. Everything just worked, while I drove it was just normal, didn't feel out of the ordinary, etc.

Given my current truck is a GM while I am in vancouver this is to be expected.

Since renting a truck was getting out of hand every week I picked up an extended rental from Zeemac, only 1 ton they had was a brand new F350 diesel. That's comparable to my 1 ton GMC in vancouver, and once again prefer my own truck.

Realistically it's just cause I'm used to my own truck. The way it drives, the delivery of power, etc.

All three domestic trucks are very good for general truck things. Whichever one you choose you will get used to.

Note: I have little to no experience driving import trucks, I've driven a Titan before, btu that was long ago, the new one looks ugly, so I probably wouldn't go that route.

And up on our work sites, you just don't see the toyota's much.

The only reason that's best in class is because Nissan doesn't have 3/4 ton and 1 ton trucks. Therefore they have to build one single truck to compete with the GM, FORD, and dodge full lineup of pickup trucks.

Whereas the big 3 don't bother cramming such a large engine into a 1/2 ton because anyone who wants that much power would just buy the 3/4 ton or 1 ton.

So in reality, no, my 1 ton duramax with 765 ft lbs kills that Titan.
