Finally busted my chief cherry. Don't think I need to throw up any pics as I'm sure you've all done it. Very pretty. Did the farther peak (both the sketchy latter and the proper chained 2nd peak) Was fun. But with le gf I wasn't rushing to the top |
that nipple photo LOL ^ Quote:
about 10 meters away while we were going straight up following the trail we saw a the grizzly bear which was running straight down the trail horizontally (it was fucking fast) it ignored us. was scared shitless because it was huge but now Ill be buying a bear mace for next week  |
Been trying to do a hike every week this spring/summer too. I've been getting lower back soreness (muscle tightness) whenever I have to ascend or climb steps. This has made it quite painful/tiring when doing hikes. Any suggestions on how to counteract this? I think it may have something to do with how I'm climbing those stairs. Felt it really bad the entire way up the grind today. |

It could have been death for you. I'm serious. Good thing no incident occurred. Definitely be careful |

anyone down to do an overnight hike to golden ears? We will hike July 12 (sunday) in the morning and get there by night then we will camp and go back down the next day |
320icar ... thanks for the great pics. I spend most of the year marathon training and I love hiking in the summer. Somehow I had never done the Chief so my GF and I went yesterday. I ran 15 km in the AM so we didn't actually start until shortly after noon. We went to the second peak and looped back down the route that most people take when they go straight to the third peak. Boy was it busy but what the heck did I expect on a 25 degree Saturday in July in the afternoon. :) |

Your point is right though ... people keep telling me to carry bear spray and I keep forgetting to get some. I have run into a couple of meandering black bears over the year and they weren't bothered by me but the circumstances could have been very different. Hot tip of the day : bear spray. Tempting! But right now I get Friday/Saturday as my weekend. I've never done overnight hiking but I'd love to try |

Ministry of Environment - Golden Ears Provincial Park - Hiking Trails on another note: I cant find anyone this sunday to do an early hike with me. Dog mountain, Fairly easy hike, 2 hours in total (vice versa). starts in mount seymour. Leave at 4am to catch the sunrise. Just confirmed, im doing Lion's binkert trail on June 28th with 2 other bromies. If anyone wanna come |
lions is cool, I did it last yr. so many black flies though, bring repellant |

They transfer so much of the workload away from your legs, knees, and back to your arms and shoulders. I'd even go as far as making the claim that they enable me to last easily 2x as long on a hike than without, and I get a far more balanced workout to boot. (Now, if I could only find the same magic bullet that would make me last 2x as long in this other kind of activity that I regularly engage in... that would be golden. :hotbaby: ) MEC has a good selection of these, but I'm sure your local fav outdoors shop would also be a good source. |
^ interesting...i might pick one up for my longer hikes later on this summer. any suggestions on good brands and what to look out for when getting trekking poles? |

There are at least a few companies that makes trekking poles, and they all seem pretty decent. Personally, I went with an aluminum Black Diamond pole because I prefer its snap latch type of height adjustment instead of the twist lock kind. But that may or may not be personal preference. One very interesting aspect that I found is, it takes some practice to get used to having a hiking pole(s). If you don't get the technique right, it feels awkward using them, and you won't like them at all. But once you are used to it, they just feel like extensions to your arms and legs, and you walk / hike / trek with them like everything is second nature. In some ways, it's kind of like learning how to walk all over again. You can talk about gait, pole placement, moving matter, etc. for as long as you want, but ultimately, I'd say you just need to build up the motor program much like how people learn to walk. And then you just do it without thinking. |
I use poles if it's more than a 4-5h hike. especially if you have a pack, it's a must |
Just did Garabaldi today...the view at the top is amazing. |
