Ack! MK2 MR2 belt breakage issue!

Okay, I did nothing to provoke this - no high revs on a highway run, no jackrabbit starts off the lights, nothing! Just cruising home from the North Shore at a leisurely pace and pulled into my alley and all of a sudden, it sounds like there's a guy with a tin can full of nuts and bolts in my engine bay! This fairly horrendous rattling that I'd never experienced before! I was on a downhill slope to my parking garage so I shut it off immediately to see if it was engine bay noise or something I ran over stick in my undercarriage or something. The noise was gone, as I coasted into my stall, so the latter option was eliminated. I started it, and it was back...for a few moments...then the sound faded away. I again shut it down and popped the hood. Looked ok. Then I peeked under passenger side wheelwell, and there it was - a broken belt half dangling off the pulley (rearward and above the oil filter.) I guess the sound was the remains of the broken belt flopping around?

Not sure which belt this is, or how destructive it is to drive the car til I get it in - which won't be Tuesday, with the holiday!!

I think it's an accessory belt? The A/C belt has been removed, and (dumb as this sounds) - these cars don't have power steering, right?

So my question is basically, any idea which is is, how much of a pain it will be to replace, and if I can drive it - all accessories off - during the daytime tomorrow?

Thanx for any and all help and advice!

If there's no PS and AC, it can only really be the alternator belt. I can't see it being very difficult to change since there's no other belts in the way.

Yup! Just went and had a good look and it looks like a strand of it has tore off...it's still 'attached' by a portion of the belt...maybe 50%? Guess it's off to Lordco in the AM...or whenever they open on a holiday Monday! =P

Even on a holiday? Cdn Tire is noon opening!

Yep. Sundays and Holidays is 9-5 :)

Sweet! Thanx man! Hopefully I can get this resolved before noon so I can enjoy the holiday sun! =)

I would call first to make sure they have the belt you need in store before going in. I'm not sure if all stores don't have drivers tomorrow, but I know mine doesn't.

Happily, I'm 5 mins from the marine shop so I'm gonna take mine off (as intact as I can) - and either bring it in for an exact part number match, or just size it up for a best-fit scenario...hope that's ok, worst case. It is a JDM MR2 but I think the belts are the same for the 2L and the 2.2L?

Not sure, but the counter staff should be able to tell you that.

Cool - thanx man! =)

status update? did you fix it?

toddzilla 05-19-2015 11:40 AM

Yup! 30 minutes and a $20 belt later and she's good to go! Pretty easy fix, happily! Thanx for the input guys!
