The punch that led Kevin Bieksa to Canucks - Cross Checks Blog - ESPN

Quote:

And to think, it was a punch in a Winnipeg parking lot that helped get playoff hero Kevin Bieksa his first pro contract with the Vancouver Canucks.

What, you say?

Enter former Canucks GM Brian Burke, who on Tuesday recounted to ESPN.com the story of Bieksa and the Canucks, which began in Winnipeg near the end of the 2003-04 season.

"He played his four years at Bowling Green. They were eliminated from the playoffs, and we brought him to Manitoba [AHL] on a PTO [professional tryout]," Burke said. "One night after a game in Winnipeg, in which I don't think he played, they went to a local establishment. Fedor Fedorov was sitting at a table and Bieksa walked by the table, bumped him by accident and spilled Fedorov's beer. Bieksa apologized and offered to buy another beer."

According to Burke, Fedorov was in no mood for the apology from the unknown rookie and challenged him to a fight outside. Bieksa again tried to defuse the situation, according to Burke, but Fedorov wanted to fight.

"So, they go outside. Fedor was a big guy, he was a lot bigger than his brother Sergei," said Burke. "Then Fedor comes in and Bieksa drills him with one punch. Knocks him stone cold and cut wide-open and leaves him lying on the pavement."

Burke said Bieksa figured he was done with the Canucks organization and would be sent home the next day.

"Send him home? I said, 'We're going to sign him tomorrow,'" said Burke, whose affinity for truculence is well-established.

Bieksa played 80 games with the Moose the following season before graduating to the Canucks in 2005-06.

and probably many more
hah

Durrann 06-26-2015 07:33 AM

^^ kind of sad seeing this
knowing character guys like bieksa might not be around anymore

and that Stanley cup run..=( was so exciting at the time

I know probably a far fetched thought, but what are the chances of Bieksa going to Sharks, and re-signing with us after the year is up?

I can't argue that for 4.6m a year he's holding up cap space, but I love the guy and he's a Canuck through and through. Bringing him back home and have him retire as a Canuck for 2.5m wouldn't be so bad would it?

punkwax 06-26-2015 07:36 AM

Sharks offered a contract extension which is why Bieksa said he'd waive to go down south.

:tears:

Any rumours on what the Sharks offered?

Hondaracer 06-26-2015 07:51 AM

So Robert lener (sp) fetches a first, who is essentially a markstrom equivalent.

Second round picks have an 18% chance of panning out, if we trade lack for anything further down than that buffalo pick we are fucking idiots

punkwax 06-26-2015 08:00 AM

Rumour out there it might be Markstrom, Bieksa & 23rd pick for SJ's 9th.

Hondaracer 06-26-2015 08:01 AM

I'd do that no questions.

Tim Budong 06-26-2015 08:04 AM

NYR may try to look for 1st rnd for talbot

I would do that in a heart beat, keeping Lack would be fricken awesome and I don't really care about Markstrom since we should of lost him on waivers last year anyways

Benning needs to make a solid effort for Hamilton. Maybe taking Lucic's baggage on as part of the deal would be appealing for Boston.

I agree but we have zero cap room that's the big problem.

6o4__boi 06-26-2015 08:09 AM

too many rumours not enough fucking action so far lol.

radioman 06-26-2015 08:12 AM

Rumour out there that Henrik and Daniel are swapping wives over the summer. Stay tuned for details.

punkwax 06-26-2015 08:13 AM

Well Hamilton only makes like 800k so Benning better figure that shit out!

68style 06-26-2015 08:16 AM

We need 7Seven to come in here and explain to us WTF Buffalo is thinking :fulloffuck:

Because he's going to be demanding $7-million+ soon????

Mike Oxbig 06-26-2015 08:27 AM

Are we getting Barzal with the 9th pick?

Buffalo has total control of Lehner and his contract(s) until 2019
whereas there is none of that with Talbot or Lack

So? Like I said, Benning needs to figure that out. Whether its Hamilton or not, you have to pay potential #1 dmen what they're worth and the Canucks need a stud on the blueline.

Plus, with the Canucks (hopefully) getting younger, there are salaries to shed while bringing in youngsters on ELCs in 2016-2017.

Benning wants to bring in younger players to be help with our cap numbers. I think its personally a good idea since we are so close to the max right now

punkwax 06-26-2015 08:33 AM

Last I heard we had ~3M in space, shedding Bieksa's 4.6M and get an additional 2M to play with next season.. so I don't think Canucks are in THAT bad of shape overall.

TjAlmeida 06-26-2015 08:33 AM

Definitely a risk move by buffalo, but lehner is only 24 years old. Still young considering he was thrown into the NHL mix at I think 21 years old. Give him a chance, if he pans out to be on a similar skill set as lack, maybe talbot, everyone will be praising buffalo for the good move.

Sure markstrom and bieksa plus pick to SJ is good, but it doesn't solve the problem of lack wanting to get into a starting position. I'm sure lack wants to move into a starting position, but their season stats were pretty close last year.
