Any idea why this was made public? Doesn't it weaken their position in a trade? I understand that most fans would trade him for a bag of pucks if that, but unless the worst-case return for the Canucks is nothing+a buyout, I don't understand why the Canucks would do this or be ok with that. As much as fans hate him, he's still a serviceable NHLer imo in the right capacity (bottom 6 PKer) at a reasonable freight and term.

I also read on twitter that Higgins isn't with the team until this situation is resolved. It seems that they've also put themselves on the clock for a deal.

The team is allowed to carry 23 players. So 2 goalies and 7 Dmen. When Sbisa returns, Pedan will be sent back to Utica.
Right now, there is 14 forwards with Sedin/Sedin/Burrows
Baertschi/Horvat/Vrbata
Higgins/Vey/Virtanen
Dorset/Cracknall/Prust
Etem/McCann

Once Sutter is ready to return, they will have 15 forwards so that is the deadline to move Higgins or put someone on waivers back to Utica.
Cracknall is a servicable 4th line center so I don't think he will go and Vey is WD's go to guy so they won't risk losing a young prospect that cost them a second round pick.
JB has made it clear Virtanen and McCann will not go back to juniors so they are staying.
That leaves Higgins as the odd man out right now.
