As far LA giving Kopitar 10M, it's a damned if they do, damned if they don't situation. 10M is a huge burden on a teams cap structure but Kopitar is phenomenal in every zone. Think LA wins 2 cups without him? I don't.
If you're Dean Lombardi would you let one the best centermen in the league walk when the rest of the team is in their prime because he wants a little bit more than you would like to give him? Kopitar at 10M won't look that bad when other star players sign new contracts. I don't love the length at 8 years but again, do you try trade him at the deadline or let him walk when you got a team ready to win cause he wants 2 more years then you would like to give him?

If you think 10M for Kopitar is too much just imagine what he could fetch as a UFA.

 | absolutely right. with doughty carter kopitar gaborik in the ages that they are plus their young guns, now is still a good window. 10M is not absurd for a Slovakian Toews (although probably not as clutch as him)

do they win another cup once his 10m/season kicks in?
 i'd say no

he isnt a game changer like a Toews, Kane, etc. He's got cups on his resume but other than score goals, he doesnt bring the intangibles like the other players in that pay grade do, as far as i've seen from him.

imo giving Stamkos money that is the same or more than a Kane/Toews is insane to me, Stamkos is not even close to those players imo

 | I agree that while I think Kopitar is pretty fucking money in the bank his intangibles are not quite on the level of a Toews and Kane but to be honest very few are.
As for Stamkos, agree 100%. He's a great player and he for the most part will give you a point a game plus, 40 + goals, probably make other players better but I don't see him as a "winner".

 | So if you had contracts for all your main pieces except one for a good 3-4yrs, you'd rather say fuck it than overpay him? Glad you're not a GM.

It's just the next wave of crazy high dollar contracts due to cap increases. I'm sure when Ovi and other big money players signed their big contracts people said it was too much and what not. Now that the cap has gone up, and players that are negotiating or looking for new contracts are looking for more money those previously signed contracts look pretty good.
Things like other contracts need to compared as well, Spezza makes 7.5M a year and Kopitar is on another world compared to him. Giroux makes 8.275M a year, Giroux is a great player but for the extra 1.725M a year I will take Kopitar every time. If you had Spezza for example instead of Kopitar at 10M what would you do with the extra 2.5M or 1.725M if you had Giroux, sign a Prust or comparable player? LA needs Kopitar a lot more than a lower tier center and another bottom 6 player. Quote: |

 | Another thing that has to be considered is can a team afford to overpay vs losing a player. For example, Lundqvist getting 8.5M a year is a lot and maybe a bit more then he "should" get. NYR could afford the extra cap at the time and they can certainly afford the actual dollar amount. What they couldn't afford is losing him. NYR could be an absolute disaster at times if Lundqvist wasn't around.
I don't buy the intangibles thing, yes they're important but was David Clarkson worth 5.25M a year before he was bought out because he had intangibles? Or is Callahan (42GP, 5G, 9A this season so far.) worth 5.8M because of his intangibles? I don't think so.

10M is too much especially with the cap uncertainty due to the Canadian dollar. 7-8m, sure. He's a hell of a player but he's not Toews.

Originally Posted by XplicitLuder but no one is being realistic with how the NHL seems to work these days | +1. I'm not sure what everyone is so worked up about. The old CBA with 13+ year contracts, they were signed on paper yes but so heavily front loaded that realistically nobody really expected players to play through to the end of them, and the player would make 3/4 of the contract amount in the realistic actual playing time of that contract anyways ~8 years lets say.
So really, the only thing that has changed is those last few garbage years in the super term contracts have been eliminated, and the per year cap hit is a more actual/realistic representation of what is actually going on with a player's compensation.
The star players are ALWAYS going to get paid, and get paid more as the years go on. Guys like Crosby, Toews, Kane, could probably demand more on the free market than what they actually signed for; so it's tough to say Kopitar isn't worth 10M/yr because the other guys took a hometown discount.

Speaking of the USD. Canadian teams take in CAD and pay out in USD.
It must be hurting those teams that aren't selling out right now... *ahem* Canucks.
Hopefully Aquaman hasn't been blowing his profit from the last few years on hookers & blow. | | | | | 01-13-2016, 10:24 PM | #4917 | | ninja edits your posts without your knowledge

i wanna find like a list of players making 5-6M+
in the last 4 years with contracts 4+ years in duration

and see where they are in their contracts and what their stats are.

i swear, that list must be like a list of players who are ridiculously underachieving

Not all tickets have to be sold for a team to call it a 'sell out.' Look at all the games the Canucks allegedly sold out in their 473 game streak. Lots of people dressed as empty seats at those games.
In Winnipeg they're looking at 300-400 tickets not sold per game. It's still a significant number but season ticket renewals are a better performance indicator of ticket sales. With a renewal rate of 96%, they are among the best in the league.
The Jets don't need to worry about money. Not when David Thompson is the owner.
