What? The actual quote is that Benning is not re-signing Vrbata and Hamhuis this summer (2015).

That does not mean he is not going to re-sign them next summer (2016), when their contracts expire.

XplicitLuder 07-08-2015 02:22 PM

we shud just not resign em because younger guys right :D

Mike Oxbig 07-08-2015 03:47 PM

What can these guys fetch for us on deadline?
Hamhuis
Vrbata
Hansen
Higgins
Edler
Burrows
Daniel Sedin (only) - :derp: house for sale

6o4__boi 07-08-2015 05:14 PM

1st+prospect
Late 1st or 2nd

5th
1st+prospect
2nd
1st+prospect

Or as Benning likes to call it
any combination of 3 to 7s, a bag of pucks, or used jocks. Please, no 1st or 2nds or blue chip prospects.

blkgsr 07-08-2015 05:18 PM

murd0c 07-08-2015 05:20 PM

XplicitLuder 07-08-2015 05:27 PM

Unless I'm reading it wrong , he has a 5th for Higgins

If you think JB can fleece a team with trading our high priced vets for stud prospects/picks you are going to be very disappointed...

Obsideon 07-08-2015 07:28 PM

I was curious about this regarding the NBA but there's more traffic here so maybe someone with knowledge of either or could chime in.

Regarding free agent recruiting, I'm assuming that there would be lots of "behind-the-scenes" incentives to lure them?

I mean every team could pretty much offer the same things: Max contracts, team culture, media market, city lifestyle. But for example a billionaire owner could "technically" feel generous and "gift" a $20 million dollar mansion for said players birthday?
Are there any league protocols to prevent that from happening?

Not really racist! 07-08-2015 07:38 PM

The NHL has ultra-strict rules about tampering

The first rule of NHL free agency is you do not tamper with free agents. The second rule of NHL free agency is YOU DO NOT sign Russian goalies to $51 million deals. The third rule is also no tampering.

The NHL has strict rules about tampering, so teams are absolutely forbidden to speak to or even about any free agents (other than their own) until noon EST on July 1. This isn’t like the NBA, where you get a window to negotiate before contracts can be officially signed. No contact between a team and players of any kind is allowed — if you want to so much as say “hello” to a pending free agent, you have to work out a trade with the team that owns his rights.

The rules are so strict that in 2009, the Maple Leafs were found guilty of tampering and fined simply because then-coach Ron Wilson told a radio station that yes, they might be interested in talking to the Sedin brothers when free agency opened the next day. The Canucks immediately complained and demanded that a penalty be assessed, because they’re Canucks and that’s all they know how to do. (lol)

No tampering. The NHL really means it, you guys!

Was checking the stats from last year and between Matthias, Bieksa, Kassian and Richardson, those scored 40 goals combined. All that's coming back is 4 from Prust. I would love to hear JB's explanation of where he thinks those 36 lost goals are going to come from. Bartkowski scored 0 last season, in fact, he's never scored an NHL goal in 131 games!

tonyzoomzoom 07-08-2015 07:53 PM

tanking doesn't require goals ;)

6o4__boi 07-08-2015 07:55 PM

Linden Vey obviously :troll:

I really hope McCann makes the team.
doubt another year in junior will help him, he's already got a solid defensive game

Are we seriously still pretending like we are a cup contender?

Guys, wake the fuck up! The best thing we can possibly do next season is tank.

Our core is past their prime and our prospects cupboard is pretty bare with anything resembling a cup team.

Benning might get shit on for making these trades today, but I'd rather have a legitimate cup contending team than a perennial playoff team that doesn't win it all.

We've been blessed with some really good hockey for almost a decade now. The message is clear: it is time we rebuild.

They've changed that. Teams are now free to communicate with pending free agents a week before July 1.

As for the gift, no, there are strict rules in the CBA regarding what teams can and cannot purchase for players.

Quote:

50.2 Player Salary, Bonuses and Actual Club Salary.
(a) "Player Salary." The only allowable form of compensation permitted to be paid to a Player shall be Player Salary, as set forth in this paragraph (a), and Bonuses, as set forth in paragraph (b) below. No other type of compensation, in any form (except only for "Traditional Hockey Practices" as set forth below), shall be permitted to be provided to any Player.

...

Other than Player Salary as outlined in (i) through (iii) above and Bonuses as set forth in subsection (b) below, no Club may provide a Player with anything of value. In addition, a Club Affiliated Entity may not provide a Player with anything of value. To the extent that a Player receives anything of value from an entity that has a contractual relationship with any Club or Club Affiliated Entity, or with the NHL or any League Affiliated Entity, for his intellectual property rights or for rendering any services for such entity, such value must be commensurate with (i.e., not clearly in excess of) fair market value. A Player is free to enter into a sponsorship, endorsement, or other commercial arrangement with a local sponsor or entity with which his Club does business but which is not a Club Affiliated Entity, in which the Player receives something of value, provided the thing of value received is commensurate with (i.e., not clearly in excess of) the fair market value of the services rendered by the Player on behalf of the sponsor or entity. Any sponsorship or endorsement arrangement between a Player and a national sponsor shall be treated in accordance with Section 26.3(e)(ii) of this Agreement.
This Article 50 does not prohibit certain "Traditional Hockey Practices," pursuant to which Clubs or Club Affiliated Entities have provided additional things of de minimis value to Players including, without limitation, all reasonable expenses associated with parental travel to and lodging for an Entry Level Player's first NHL game, golf outings, parent-son road trips (in- season trips permitted for a trip that includes a minimum of two (2) games and a maximum of four (4) nights), seasonal events and seasonal gifts (e.g., picnics and Christmas parties or gifts), and Milestone Gifts (e.g., for significant career- or League-related achievements (as set forth in Exhibit 38), and for particular significant Club-related achievements (subject to NHL approval after consultation with the NHLPA)), so long as no Milestone Gift exceeds $25,000 (U.S.). Such Traditional Hockey Practices shall not be counted in a Club's Upper Limit or Lower Limit, or against the Players' Share.

I've been wondering for so long how that works. I was thinking the Canucks could have given Luc the addresses of those who trashed his family (?) property (or was it his church?). Then he might've been a Canuck.....
