i just don't like the fact we lose a 2nd rounder over this.
I'd pick Sutter over Bonino in the west. He's an upgrade over Bonino for sure but that kinda fucks up the Cap situation.
it scares me just a little bit though that Benning might sign him to a Sbisa-like contract. At $3.3M he's already overpaid imo

Sutter is a great 2 way player, but he will never be a 50+ point player. Is that worth $5 million a season? Seems like Benning threw all his cards on the table during negotiations calling Sutter a foundation player.

Luongo, Schneider, Kesler, Bieksa, Lack = Markstrom, Horvat, Sbisa, Sutter, Dorsett, McCann, 3rd, 3rd, 7th, retained salary on Luongo.

well if horvat is becoming the 2nd line center, having sutter over bonino makes sense defensively. really felt bonino had to be surrounded by defensive players which hurt our 2nd line. clendening at this point with the other rfa's we have and upcoming d is extremely expendable. the pick is a bit weird but dont think it makes too much dif in the long run unless both the canucks and islanders go deep in the playoffs/finish high
sedins-burrows
baert-horvat-vrbata
higgins-sutter-hansen
looks better than last year

I personally like this trade. Sutter over bonino for sure. Clendening may be a bit harder to swallow but we have other who can possibly move into his void in the depth chart.
Losing a late second rounder and recouping probably a mid to early third rounder. My thinking is Benning figured moving hamhuis or vrbata during the season will recoup early round pick(s). Obviously more picks the better but possibly sacrificing now on paper will will turn into a refilled draft pick ssituation later in the season.

Baertschi signs a one year contract: Canucks re-sign forward Sven Baertschi - Vancouver Canucks - News
Vancouver Canucks General Manager Jim Benning announced today that the Canucks have re-signed forward Sven Baertschi to a one-year, one-way contract.
Baertschi, 22, appeared in two playoff games as well as three regular season games with the Canucks, where he registered two goals (2-0-2). He also split time this season between the Utica Comets, the Calgary Flames and the Adirondack Flames. With Utica, he collected 15 points (7-8-15) in 15 regular season games and notched a team-high eight goals (8-7-15) in 21 playoff games during the 2015 Calder Cup Playoffs. Prior to joining Vancouver and Utica, Baertschi appeared in 15 games with the Calgary Flames this past season, recording four assists (0-4-4) and six penalty minutes. He also appeared in 36 games with the Adirondack Flames, collecting 25 points (8-17-25) and six penalty minutes.
The Bern, Switzerland native has appeared in 69 regular season NHL games split between Vancouver and Calgary collecting 30 points (10-20-30) and 26 penalty minutes.
The 5’11”, 190-pound forward was originally selected by Calgary 13th overall in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft. He was acquired by Vancouver from the Calgary Flames in exchange for Vancouver’s second round pick in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft on March 2, 2015.

I hated the Kesler trade and after 1 season of watching Bonino, I think the Sutter trade isn't that bad.
I just hope JB thinks the same thing and may be trying to move Vrbata and Hamhuis for picks.

Trade a young producing defensemen for an older ahl ready defensemen is fucking stupid.

it's funny how in the end we ended up essentially trading Kesler for Sutter
iirc, with that one way deal. Baertschi becomes an RFA with arbitration rights at the end of that deal right?

I remember JB said it was worth it to trade a young prospect for someone that was more along the way.
But of course, part of the problem is that much of the canucks roster, JB probably knew very little about.
After 1 full season, he probably has a much better understanding of how full the cupboards are.

With subbam/hutton already in the system forsling/clendenning were expendable. Add to the fact all the other young d we have. Pedan/mceneny/fedun/brisebois/corrado. Too many with 5/6 potential

| Flyers ink Couturier to six-year extension - Article - TSN
Philly resigns Couturier for 6 years @ 4.33 M per year.
I wonder if this will have any effect on the Sutter extension cause they are fairly similar players in their roles as defensive centers and statistically they were nearly the same last season.
Couturier: 82GP, 15G, 22A, 37PTS, +/- +4, 28 PIMS, ATOI 18:23
Sutter: 80GP, 21G 12A, 33PTS +/- +6 14 PIMS, ATOI 17:19
Couturier is only 22 years old and might have some untapped potential considering he was drafted 8th overall, and did a great job getting under the skin of the Penguins in the 2012 playoffs during that crazy first round series between Philly and Pittsburgh

If we pay Sutter anywhere around that kind of money Benning can choke on a dick.
This off season should be kind of fun not caring where we finish next year and looking forward to some fresh air on the team but instead it's been super frustrating to watch and nothing that's been done makes any sense.........

Couturier has 3 RFA years in that new contract.
Couturier was 8th overall, not 4th.

^ 13M over 3 is acceptable IMO. Cap is going up, there are worst contracts out there, especially with what bringing him in means to the team overall. He'll push Horvat for 2nd line center, is much more sound defensively than Bonino and his scoring % per shot is very high.
Everyone thinks Benning is overpaying today (and he has in several cases) but by the end of these contracts, relative to the cap, they could be good signings.
Anyway... I've preached patience in this thread for years. Fans now need it more than ever. Don't expect anything next season and hopefully just enjoy watching some youngsters grow into NHL'ers. That's what I'm going to do anyway... Go Nucks.

I don't see the big loss in Clendening either. Of the few of his games I watched, he didn't look like he possessed the potential to crack the top 4, and his game wasnt gritty enough to be a 5/6

So Sven Baertschi's one-year deal is worth $900,000, its not that bad of a deal
