Cinema always reflects our anxieties back onto us, so it's no surprise to see that the Top Gun sequel will involve unmanned aerial vehicles. Producer David Ellison told Collider that Tom Cruise will return to the series that made him famous, with a story where Maverick tries to out-maneuver a fleet of drones. It appears as if the flick will depict "the end of an era of dogfighting and fighter pilots" as the world's powers switch over to remotely-flown, computer-aided flying death machines.
It'll take plenty of Hollywood magic to make the film, since in the real world, drones are pretty terrible at aerial combat. In fact, as Wired reported in 2012, the one time that a Predator drone came up against a crewed MiG-25, the former wound up smashed to bits. Perhaps that'd make it a fair fight, given that Maverick will be closer to 55 by the time Top Gun 2: Danger Zone goes into production -- although we are looking forward to the scene where Tom Cruise plays topless volleyball with a DJI Phantom 3.

they've been talking about it for years now
Tony Scott (original director) was working on it with Tom quite heavily before Tony Scott (brother of Ridley Scott) committed suicide in 2012 and the movies hopes for a sequel seemed to have ended then as well
It'd be nice if they follow through with the sequel now but who knows

Stealth is surprisingly a good movie. I thought it would be a sci fi flick, but it was relatively realistic for near-future fiction with some hollywood stuff.
Top Gun II will prob end up like this:
-Starts off at a real war zone during a flashback(Libya 2011, Iraq 2003) and the protagonist(played by shitty iunno y he's famous, Chris Pratt) does some crazy shit during a dog fight and is praised by his superiors
-Goes to Red Flag(pretty much IRL a yearly exercise in Nevada) where the best pilots from NATO, USAF, US Navy, Israel, and more stage a massive war game in the the desert
-This year the 'aggressors' will be played by a new type of aerial drone, or a squad of drones lead by a manned aircraft with a veteran pilot(Tom Cruise who is now a high ranking officer and veteran instructor at red flag).
-All the while there is a hidden agenda for the top commanders of Red Flag and defense contractors to use this exercise to prove human pilots are unnecessary.
-Protagonist defeats all the odds and proves some human instinct blah blah is impossible to replicate in machines defeats the drones and Tom Cruise in a crazy dog fight.
Here is a good documentary about Red Flag:
There is also a Red Flag north that occurs in Alberta or Alaska and iirc
Or they could do something crazy, like stop making shitty sequels of movies that came out with writers were decently original, and come out with new concepts.

If I had to guess,
It's a propaganda ploy from the military industrial complex for the F-35.
They've spent countless millions on that failed aircraft, I think this is happening to try to salvage some publicity.
