You'd be surprised how peppy it is. With the gearing I have it is plenty quick in 1st and 2nd gears, which is perfect for living in the city.
My 357 rwhp Vortech S2000 and 520 rwhp(pump gas) T88 Supra would smoke the E36 5.0 by the top of 2nd gear. However, the 5.0 right off idle will put you in the seat and feel much faster than both of those cars from a complete stop. Around town the E36 5.0 is more fun than the S2000 or Supra, but on the highway the E36 5.0 runs out of breath fast after about 120-130 KPH. The Supra at 130 KPH is just starting to REALLY haul ass! I remember nearly shitting my pants at how 130-200 KPH went by:
130-BRAAWWWWWRRRRRRRRR for 2 seconds-200!
In the E36 5.0, do I need much acceleration beyond 130 KPH? Not really, not the way I drive now.
Self-justify it as much as you want, and I'm sure it makes sense to you, but you spent a lot of time and money, and the results are a bit low as to what one may expect.
It's like going to the trouble of setting up a home theater, 80" tv, surround sound, everything, that can only play VHS tapes. Telling your friends that it's ok because you only ever watch VHS isn't going to change their mind about what you've done.
First gear shoots up to redline pretty quick for me, in about a second or two. When it hits 3800rpm or so the car is pretty jerky and I have to pay a bit more attention to the rear wanting to slide out. Second gear just pulls straight to redline, and same with 3rd gear and so forth. Pretty smooth acceleration, not much to say.
The e46 first few thousand RPM's have a decent amount of torque, at 4000 or so though it's just slow. Other gears.. just slow, smooth on its way up to redline but not much power. Feels kind of like a civic tbh
I don't get why people don't understand the 187whp v8 thing. Fox body mustangs come from the factory with 225 at the crank. Just because you swap it into a different car doesn't magically give it an extra 100hp. Lol.

I don't know if you've owned a 357 rwhp supercharged S2000 or a 520 rwhp T88 Supra, but I can tell you that in 1st and 2nd gear around town, a 187 rwhp 5.0 E36 with low gearing (3.91) feels faster than those cars around the city. At the top of 2nd the S2000 and the Supra fly by the 5.0. Before 80-90 KPH the 5.0 is hanging pretty good. That is all you need around town!
It is not until you get on the highway do those imports blow the doors off the V8.

460hp rips through the 7sp manual like a beast
I used to drive my buddy's C5 6 speed LS1 Corvette around all the time, his 1st gear went to like 90 KPH... the car would have felt MUCH faster with lower gears!

What speed do you redline in 1st?
6500rpm is redline in 1st would be almost 57mph so it needs a shift for 60mph, dont think i have hit it to often its still kinda new..lol
Well maybe a few times...........................
Here is a video of a convertible to give u and idea as well.
