Tesla Model S P90D - Just Announced - 0-60 in 2.8 seconds - "Ludicrous Mode/Speed".

So, just announced today, Tesla is coming out with a "Ludicrous" mode/speed Tesla Model S, termed the "Tesla Model S P90D".

Or, current Tesla Model S P85D owners can "upgrade" or I would say, tune, their cars to the P90D's 762HP by paying $10,000.

So, what does this upgrade do?

Increasing the HP to 762 ponies giving the newly termed P90D a spec of "0-60 in 2.8 seconds" and that "the new 762 horsepower (SEVEN HUNDRED SIXTY-TWO HORSEPOWER!) Tesla Model S P90D is just 0.1 seconds of a second slower to highway speed than a Koenigsegg Agera R."

The Tesla Model S P85D is already insanely fast. No, seriously – its 691 horsepower made it so fast it’s got an Insane Mode. But that’s not fast enough, because Tesla just found a way to step it up even higher than that, to 762 horsepower. To Ludicrous Mode.

Elon Musk is giving a conference call right now describing some updates to the Tesla Model S. There’s some stuff about slightly cheaper prices, and a bigger 90KwH battery pack, but the real news for us nutjobs is that today, we can officially declare it LudaChristmas.

Rocketing from 0-60 in 2.8 seconds, the new 762 horsepower (SEVEN HUNDRED SIXTY-TWO HORSEPOWER!) Tesla Model S P90D is just 0.1 seconds of a second slower to highway speed than a Koenigsegg Agera R. It’ll do the quarter mile in 10.9 seconds, which may even make it good enough for Dom Toretto.

That also means the Tesla Model S will now accelerate with the force of 1.1G, which means it’ll actually feel faster than falling.

Obviously, it’s kind of mind-boggling to imagine how Musk & Co. at Tesla managed to squeeze another 10% out of the system in the Model S, so let Elon Musk himself explain how they did it:

While working on our goal of making the power train last a million miles, we came up with the idea for an advanced smart fuse for the battery. Instead of a standard fuse that just melts past a certain amperage, which means you aren’t exactly sure when it will or won’t melt or if it will arc when it does, we developed a fuse with its own electronics and a tiny lithium-ion battery. It constantly monitors current at the millisecond level and is pyro-actuated to cut power with extreme precision and certainty.

That was combined with upgrading the main pack contractor to use inconel (a high temperature space-grade superalloy) instead of steel, so that it remains springy under the heat of heavy current.

The net result is that we can safely increase max amp throughout from 1300 to 1500 Amps. If you don’t know much about Amps, trust me this is a silly big number of Amps to be going through something the size of your little fingernail.

What this results in is a 10% improvement in the 0 to 60 mph time to 2.8 secs and a quarter mile time of 10.9 secs. Time to 155 mph is improved even more, resulting in a 20% reduction.
And Ludicrous Mode won’t be limited to the Model S, as it’ll debut on the Model X as well. Though because it’s an SUV, it’ll do the 0-60 run in a positively sluggish 3.3 seconds, or just 0.1 seconds off an original McLaren F1.

The way it works, Elon says, is that the system basically works the way it would in the previous craziness, Insane Mode, up until 30 miles per hour. After that, it steps up the game to Ludicrous Mode. It can’t really do Ludicrous all the way from zero miles per hour, simply because there’s no way to surmount the laws of physics and traction.

If you want to upgrade your Model S to the new specification, it’ll cost you about $10,000. Which sounds like a lot, until you think for 2.8 seconds and realize you’ll get LUDICROUS SPEED.

Musk went on to say that the next-generation Tesla Roadster will debut in four years, with one speed even faster – maximum plaid.

Which sounds like a joke. But do you think he’s kidding?
The Tesla Model S Just Got Upgraded To LUDICROUS SPEED

What do you guys think?

Personally, 2 years ago, I test drove the Tesla Model S 70 and it was very ponderous and heavy.

It was ... a boring car.

Sure, it will go really, really fast in a straight-line, but the Model S will never perform well on a track or do well in curves or real-world conditions.

So, I did a little research and I was right:
The Tesla Model S P85D is # 85 on the list.

Do Tesla owners need this "Ludicrous" speed for the straight-line acceleration?

What are your thoughts?

hellcat will cry, losing its most hp production sedan title

inb4 ludacris makes an instagram video launching the car and then proceed's to shout out "now thats ludicrous".

I keep seeing this little Lotus looking thing plugged into the electric charge station at Kits beach. Except it says Tesla on the back. WTF is it, and if it gets 600hp, i'm sure it will beat the model S on that list you've posted. Looks like a fun little car.

hud 91gt 07-17-2015 09:38 PM

Looks like I found it. I bet it would be a riot, despite how heavy it is.

Here's the video for the kids who don't know the movie reference.

I've seen this movie over 100x but I will never get sick of watching it.

I give major props to Elon for keeping on pushing the envelope for electric cars, who else could make you this excited about an electric vehicle.

Who's going to be tracking a Tesla anyways? No one that's who. This is so you can impress your friends and embarrass supercar owners. Hell pretty much every car owner will get left behind from light to light.

Berz out.

^^^ LOL at the driver of that Ford Mustang GT rank 125 for the Laguna Seca lap times... how bad can u be to get beat by a RAV4 EV lol..

Mike.L 07-18-2015 11:31 AM

Now thats one fast laptop :rukidding:

It's not fast enough, needs more batteries !!!

brrrz 07-18-2015 11:58 AM

Take out the two $1M cars at the top. Next 5 cars are all American and retailed for under $130K and also lapped 2 seconds faster then the Nismo GTR and 3 seconds faster then the Ferrari 458 and ever popular GT3 on this forum.. Rumors of a 750hp twin turbo Zora (next gen ZR1) to be released next :drool

There's a P85D in my neighbourhood that loves to gun it light to light. Haven't encountered the guy on my bike but he would definitely give me a run for my money. The P85 is already ridiculously fast. +$10k for 762 HP is an amazing investment.

6o4__boi 07-22-2015 02:15 PM

all i can think of is 0-dead in 2.8 secs

Zoomy 07-22-2015 03:53 PM

I personally am not interested in the lap times the P90 can produce, as its not designed specifically for that purpose. All I care about is that the feeling of the torque on acceleration, and the fact that they have the balls to call have a button labeled "Ludicrous Mode".

And that it can make all the Hellcat guys run home to mommy. lol.

StylinRed 07-22-2015 11:21 PM

The new McLaren 675LT 0-62MPH in 2.9s with 666hp :D

But it's like $500k

So Tesla <3

I can just picture it if Apple made a car. You'd have to go through itunes just to start it.
