Modifying a collectors plate vehicle

I've been unable to find anything online;
What happens if you get collectors plates, then modify your vehicle?
What about with no comprehensive (never make a claim when at fault)?
Thoughts?

You can do whatever you want with it. Trouble comes when you try to make a claim. Do you want to risk having your insurance invalidated due to the undeclared modifications? Remember when that happens, it won't be the car, but the people another property damage you would have to figure out on your own.

I think I remember reading that to qualify for collectors plates, the vehicle had to be in original condition. I doubt they'd reinspect after you actually get the plates though, although a strict police officer might notice and issue a VI ticket

if you change things out after getting approved then getting into an accident, they're gonna know especially if say your OEM wheels were supposed to be bent but you put on aftermarket rims.

Id rather pay more for valid insurance than pay a lower rate for insurance that I know I am voiding. There are some modifications which are allowed, which are specified on ICBC's website.

Have you even looked at the application for collectors plates?
Allowed mods are at the bottom of that doc..

http://www.icbc.com/vehicle-registra...tor-status.pdf

If you mod your car after you get the plates, you're breaking your agreement with them, so they might not cover you in an accident.

Also be aware that lots of people take glee in calling ICBC to report people who's collector cars are not up to par or modified and those reports are definitely investigated.

This happens all the time and they even include photos of the vehicle that is modified that shouldn't be.

I've looked into this before, it seems like most of the allowed modifications only apply to vintage American cars. Some things they don't cover, like I can replace a carb or an intake manifold, but can I add a cold air intake? Replace rubber hoses with silicone?with all the later model vehicles becoming eligible I wish they would clarify things like that

Rightly or wrongly. They only care about the look.. As long as the silicone hose looks OE they don't care. As long as the air box is still there and no shiny pipe.. they don't care if it is a K&N filter underneath. Being period correct gives you a pretty wide latitude to do things. eg I swapped my BMW shoe's waterpump to a Stewart, the ICBC guy just nodded and okay.. remember it is wearable items too.

It is all about the documentation.

As godwin pointed out, it's the personal injury and property damage that will really screw him over.

Even if there isn't an accident and ICBC finds out about the mods, they could sue him for fraud and try to recoup the cost difference.

It has to go thru an approval process to get collector plates and status after doing so the onus is on you to maintain it to that standard if you deviate from that it is a breach of contract and ICBC can deny you coverage in the event you need it. As for the police they have nothing to do with it so the chances of getting a VI just because you put a stereo or changed your wheels is unlikely unless yor mods made it dangerous.
