Yes, but how many of those were REAL issues, or how many REALLY understood them... as opposed to just latching onto them because they sounded important or bad or whatever?

Most people who run for public office come from wealthy backgrounds. People think that just because they make 150K/year and get pensions (only after 8 years of service), they are running for office for the money. Most candidates, particularly those who become cabinet ministers, probably made more money in their former professions without the stress of being in the public spotlight. I bet some of the wise minds of RS probably make higher salaries than your typical politician.

Look at the bio of the modern candidate - they're either successful entrepreneurs, lawyers, doctors, or CEOs and have name recognition in their respective communities outside of their professions.

Conservatives continue to criticise ABC strategic voters for not voting the party that best represents them? How many conservatives said they hate Harper but they were voting conservative anyway? Or had no choice but to vote conservative because they couldn't bring themselves to vote for a left party and would rather drop dead than vote for Trudeau because of his father? How many conservative voters had to compromise progressive values like pro-choice, right-to-die, legalization of drugs, the environment, etc because they only had one real choice on the right? How many religious fundamentalists had to compromise on far right social values because they had one real choice on the right? The right is full of compromise and not getting what you want because there is only one viable party to vote for. They have to try and please as many people as possible and end up satisfying very few.

The nation leans left, yet vote-splitting allowed the conservatives to win minorities and an a majority. After 10 years of Harper, the majority of Canadians, had enough, sucked it up, and compromised like the conservatives.

What I always find extremely facepalmy is the sheer number of people who completely ignore major things and vote one way or the other because of a single, relatively minor issue. Of course given that it happens on all sides, it might just cancel out.

No kidding.

On the upside West Vancouver's old Mayor Pam Jones got her seat (not really a surprise), she was a great mayor and will make a great MP.

Same goes for North Vancouver, Wilkinson should make a solid MP. Although I thought Claire Martin did a great job this election, too bad she's just part of the wrong party...

My riding in Kenora Ontario was won by 500+- votes. Bob Nault, ex Minister from JC's Liberals from '88-06'. He retired and decided to run again. Kenora region is HUGE with a ton of reserves, I'm happy to see he won he will hopefully bring some good experience to the current party.

Another clear example of why everyone should vote. YOU NEVER KNOW WHAT'LL HAPPEN!

TL;DR: Tim Uppal (Blue Turban Guy in the House of Commons)...

Spoiler!

...lost to his Liberal competitor. Tim was up 200 votes early on and by the end of the count, lost by 80.

Back from the dead

Montreal sewage dump: Environment minister gives conditional OK - Montreal - CBC News

Just think it's funny that the newly appointed lib enviro minister Catherine McKenna gives the okay for the city of Montreal to dump 8 BILLION litres of raw sewage into the St. Lawrence river and there is very seemingly very little backlash.

If this was OK'd by the cons before they were voted out of office they would have been attacked...

But because it wasn't the Cons, peeps like Manic! will just find a reason to support the decision as opposed to taking a stand against as they would have if the event was approved by Harpers cabinet.

Bias much?

For a better understanding of the issue

Montreal's sewage dump saga explained in 5 key points - Montreal - CBC News

Oddly they have dumped similar volumes in the past but only during Liberal leadership.

Spring 2003 : 10 billion litres
Fall 2003 : 7.6 billion litres
Fall 2005 : 770 million litres

They've been working on it for decades, but every municipality has had a NIMBY attitude and, as a result, every proposal was shot down.

It looks like they've finally settled on a plan, but it'll probably take several more years before it's ready to go.

It's laughable because even shitty little towns like Crofton have had sewage treatment for well over a decade while the capital and the largest city on the island still doesn't.

Yeah Vic dumps their sewage as well, though in their defense it's dumped at depth and is supposedly carried out to the pacific which causes no significant environmental impact. It's also dumped on a daily basis, roughly 130M liters per day.

In contrast the St. Lawrence is a small river and the sewage must travel a great distance to hit the Atlantic... and there is considerable irrigation and small communities the length fo the river + they are dumping a massive quantity of 8B liters over 7 days or roughly 10x the daily Vic. sewage discharge per day.

Victoria has researched their disposal method, Montreal is just dumping cause the cost of dealing with it correctly would be significant.

Without actually looking at volume calcs I imagine a comparison between the two would be something like coffee with a drop of cream to a full blow latte with dairy content representing the sewage.

IDK, but shit is nasty lol.
