How to pause my car insurance?

Since i am going back home for about 2 months, need to pause the insurance. But how to do that? Do i need to do the in advance? Thanks for your answer.

Teriyaki 09-15-2015 05:17 PM

Cancel it. Then buy it again when you return. Thats how I do it.

Great68 09-15-2015 05:26 PM

You can't "Pause" insurance.

And for 2 months, cancelling is hardly worth it.

If you cancel, you have to forfeit your plates, then when you get insurance again you will be charged for new plates.

Gerbs 09-15-2015 05:37 PM

A new plate is only 18 dollars.

XplicitLuder 09-15-2015 05:40 PM

you have to cancel it completely. Which for 2 months, i would do

Great68 09-15-2015 05:53 PM

Keep in mind that if you "Cancel" your insurance, your car is not covered in the event ANYTHING happens to it while you're away.

You can put storage insurance on it, which isn't too expensive.

I should have stipulated that when I say it's not "worth it" i'm basing that on the roughly $100 a month it costs me for insurance. It's not worth MY time of dicking around at the insurance office, and changing my plates to save a hundred bucks or so.

it's either storage or cancelling insurance. you should talk to your insurance agent.

if you live in a condo, I think the strata requires you to have insurance at all times in the lot.

dicking around ? bruh it takes like 10mins ... you rather spend 100 x 2 months over taking 10mins of your day to cancel your insurance and put storage (if you do that) + an 18$ fee when you re-do it ? okay...we got a baller over here :troll:

Yeah, ok find me an ICBC agent that takes no more than 10 minutes to process the transaction, let alone the drive to the office, waiting for an available agent etc. Then repeat in 2 months time.

Nope not worth my time.

MikeHB 09-15-2015 09:35 PM

Plus a $30 cancellation fee?

68style 09-15-2015 10:47 PM

Why would you take the time to post on here and wait for a dozen uneducated responses that will give you, at best, a very vague answer to your question instead of just, oh I don't know... phoning a fucking insurance agency or, maybe... just maybe... ICBC? You know, the place that provides said insurance to you and asking them??????

If you are going away for a while and your insurance is not cheap, it's definitely worth it. I used to do every summer when I head home for vacation. The cost is under $100, (more like $50, but it was a while back) and I'm not sure about you guys, but even with roadstar, my insurance is still quite more than $100 a month.

Heck, my insurance agent even gave me a ride once from airport so I could have my *new* insurance ready to go when I get back home.

because RS knows all
I mean, good luck finding an ICBC agent willing to discuss Zionist conspiracies, personal habits, and unfiltered personal opinions while answering any related insurance questions.

My insurance agent comes my my house. It's ridiculously easy really. I just sign 4 pages and I'm done. For both my vehicles.

For insurance renewals, they should just let you do it online. There's no point driving ICBC rates up with brokers for this.

good luck trying to preach what your time is worth to people on here.

Out of curiosity, what do you mean by this? That a broker may get in a car accident while being mobile?

or rates go up because ICBC uses brokers to sell their insurance?

murd0c 09-16-2015 08:35 AM

ICBC rates go up because of accidents not because you cancel and renew your insurance...

jackmeister 09-16-2015 08:52 AM

well, if you have a diligent insurance agent (if not, go find one) tell them the dates you'll be away and they'll change your insurance (to storage) for you when you leave, and when you're back.

my dad changes to storage insurance for even a month, let alone 2 months in your case.

!e.lo_ 09-16-2015 09:18 AM

always switch to storage insurance.
you get to keep your plates, so no need to pay $18 for new plates.
you get a refund on any remaining time on your storage term if you choose to reinsure your car before the storage policy expires.

Simplex123 09-16-2015 09:18 AM

^ You still have to forfeit your plates when you change to storage insurance, no?
*edit* nvm question answered lol

It costs money to have brokers to sell insurance...

trollguy 09-16-2015 12:16 PM

Just called an autoplan broker as I was thinking of storing one of my vehicles till next spring.
I'm.on autoplan 12 and she said I had to cancel my insurance first thus having to surrender my plates before switching to a storage plan.

Zordon 09-16-2015 02:07 PM

You only get to keep your plates if your insurance has lapsed.

As for broker costs, I don't think our rates are primarily correlated with how much it costs for brokers to sell the insurance. See below from a recent globalBC article of the proposed rate increase.

Quote:

They say the hike is needed to cover current payouts and prepare for future ones, saying higher legal and medical costs have caused claims to rise by $500 million in five years.
I would like to believe that direct sales will be coming in the future but there are still many questions. Such as how much will it cost to implement? Will there still be a need for auto plan insurance brokers? Will it create more fraud? Will there be more under insured claims?
If you're not properly insured then what are the risks (no coverage?)?

I think the above questions could affect costs of claims and fraud, thus could increase rates as well.
