Popping cause of metal contracting and expanding? Can happen if the heater was recently on and its just cooling now that it is off.

Hot water baseboards, or electric baseboards?
If it's hot water, you could have Air in the system and/or your valve could be passing.

You usually won't hear the water running unless there's some air trapped in the system.
A good rule of thumb which my landlord follows is, every year just have the furnace guy come in and give everything a quick once over before the heat gets clicked on

Sounds like all he did was purge the air from the water lines at each heater.

The automatic air vents may need to be replaced.

Water will never ever be air free, so there will always be air in the system.
First turn on all your zones (crank all the thermostats to max) and let the system run
Now usually the air vents will be on the farthest radiator in the house on the top floor, but depends who ran the piping.
Find the vent and get a small bucket and just let the vent loose and let the air escape. Get some rags cause there will be water.
Another way is to locate the automatic vent on top of the boiler and same thing, turn on all the zones and bleed the air from the vent on the boiler.
Now if you don't see any water or the vent opening is stuck on the vent, then you have to replace the automatic air vent.
PM if you need help
