McLaren 570s...ugly rear?

New mclaren 570s. Rear just doesn't do it for me.

When compared to the P1, it looks alright to me.

I didn't like it at first but it grew on me.

bananana 10-22-2015 08:03 AM

Another sad example of perfunctory design diffusion. Lazily references and mimics the curves+design language of the flagship P1 but rehashed as to not create any misunderstanding between which model is the king. Not the worst offender though... cough cough Merc CLA. :Puke:

Personally I already miss the amazingly sexy almost-brutalist slatted rear of the 12C/650/675LT. Could've been a thing.

To avoid being a complete dick I will say this is one of those designs that will look a lot better in person.

The only things this has going for it are the badge and the excitement of being a brand new model. Good luck to McLaren if they think this can compete with the new R8/AMG GT-S/911. Interesting car, interesting price tier/market segment. Too bad its ugly-af.

Anyone else miss how (comparatively) boring the "old" supercar designs were?

http://image.automobilemag.com/f/601...above-view.jpg

Akinari 10-22-2015 09:14 AM

I for one, from when the 570S was initially revealed till now, have voiced my displeasure in terms of the design of the rear. It just seems like the whole design was so forced, random non-flowing lines and mismatching shapes placed there for the sake of having them.

If comparing the 570S rear end to the P1 which I'm assuming McLaren designers used as the inspiration for the design of the rear end of the 570S, you can see the LED lights actually flow with the lines of the car whereas those eBay LED strips on the 570S just doesn't work, for me at least. Such a terribly disproportionate looking sports car.

I mean, look at how amazing the 675LT is! Not just the rear of the car, but the entire car and the coherence of its design theme.

gallardo is a not a good example honestly but thats only because that car never really did anything for me. that new hurcan though, damn is it ever fine.

yes akinari, that 675LT is beast. absolutely love that car.

Gucci Mane 10-22-2015 11:53 AM

crap double posted.

Had a look at this car as my next car, it's pretty nice but for $225K+ I'd rather buy a used 458 or wait and get a used Huracan. Even the new R8 V10+ will be in this price range. You also have to worry about the crazy depreciation on MCs.

Meh, most modern McLarens don't do much for me. This is the worst looking of all of them though. Still a cool car, but just a toaster to me.

thumper 10-22-2015 04:16 PM

i agree it's not the most beautiful, but let those who are falling behind in your rear view mirrors worry about it ;)

Neither of those have a CF chassis. Neither have the straight line performance. And I believe a new 458 was more expensive.

Digitalis 05-25-2016 03:04 PM

I far prefer the 570s rear to all the existing mclarens except the p1.
That 80's plastic slats look has got to go.

The McLaren F1 is in different league though.

It was the king of supercar back then. Fastest in the world, $1 million price tag was also out of world too.

The only compromise they had to make was the engine.
Gordon Murray said that he wanted to get a light weight 4.5L V10 or V12 from Honda, but Honda didn't want to get involved in the McLaren F1 development.

Which is weird since this vehicle was supposed to meant for like a celebration between McLaren-Honda F1 team partnership.
The McLaren F1 would've bee so legendary if it had a Honda engine...the golden era of Ayrton Senna and McLaren-Honda F1 team.

I read similar story somewhere about Lotus too.
Honda didn't want to provide K20 (the 220hp DC5 Integra Type-R engine) for Lotus Elise...so they had to comprise for 1.8L Celica engine from Toyota.

I disagree, but then again I'm a bit biased :mamoru:

I really like the 570S and Mclarens in general. I agree they are not as pretty or sound nearly as good as Ferraris or Lambos, but in Vancouver, I think it is a kooler kind of car. A car more for the hardcore car enthusiasts Vs a car that makes a fashion statement or shows the world how rich you are....you might not agree, but that is my personal opinion.

westopher 05-26-2016 07:26 AM

Funny, I feel the opposite. I've never seen anyone over 25 in a mclaren. Everyone hopping out of them seems to have a pair of Aladdin pants, some gaudy LE Nike air max and a fucking billionaire boys club shirt.

Z3guy 05-26-2016 07:29 AM

^ haha! I feel the same sentiments when I go to Mcdonalds in Kerrisdale and I see 3 kids pulling in with 458s with Ns on the back.......
