Not saying Miata is a bad car, but I think the biggest point of Miata is having fun without a lot of power and hurting your wallet.

I have always been looking at Miata as a fun and affordable sportscar.
If they are getting more expensive than the 370Z, I think it has lost it's attractiveness.
The 370z is a sport car. Yes it is...Timpo

Just that no one wants to talk about the 370z in this thread Timpo. Dont you get it?

There's an MX-5 GT, which adds Navi, 17 inch wheels, Bose sound system, heated seats, etc.

MX-5 GT: $41,125 plus tax
Who would pay this kind of price for a Miata?

See I personally would pay that much for a S2000 new...but not miata...can't really explain why...maybe just perception of the car?

well for starters, the s2000 has 240hp, and that was in 1999! Hard to justify spending over $40k on a car that only has 155hp

First of all, awesome review!

I gotta say, IMHO, Japanese manufacturers are not getting it.

It's not just how the car feels, but also the way it looks.

The ND Miata looks dated before it even hit the market. And really there's only one single problem: head/taillights are god forbiddingly ugly. they need to go back to the drawing board, think with LED/OLED only for both head/taillight. Else it really looks like a car from the 90s (unless that's the purpose)

Look what BMW is doing:

Audi pioneered fancy headlight design with being the first to introduce LED headlight, and it brought automobile design languages to a new dimension.

Lexus is finally getting it, and the new NX and RX has some very nice lighting design. But for Mazda to be able to sell Miata, they really need to up their game.

I truly wish Japanese manufacturers were more competitive, but Europeans or (god forbid) even Korean are really killing with design.

I actually don't mind the ND Miata's design, power weight, everything.
Overall, they did a very good job.

I just have a problem with its price. It's more expensive than the Nissan Z car. What the shit.

Miata needs to be $20,000-$25,000 to be competitive. Not $41,125 plus tax.

You're talking about BMW, Audi and Lexus.

In my opinion, Miata is definitely in a different league. It's a lightweight sportscar.

Richard Hammond from Top Gear said "Miata was never popular because of what it had, but because of what it didn't have" so Miata should be getting rid of all the luxury features like all the other cars have. To an extent obviously.

Miata is an affordable sports car, or supposed to be. I don't expect them to come with smart lighting. Neither do I think the design looks dated, the front/side profile is refreshing but the rear is borderline timpo material.

How much was NC's MSRP when it launched? $25K seems like the sweet spot but I don't think $30K is outrageous given how low our dollar is.

But when it forms part of the design language, it can look so good.

Plus, if it's an econobox, fine... but it's a 40K+ convertible with 2016 design. I expect it to come at least as an option.

First off you are lumping all japanese manufacturers into one category, all based on the miata?

Second off, you can't compare a BMW to mazda. Just like you can't compare the NSX to the Miata.

All the companies which you are listing are luxury divisions of other manufacturers. Mazda doesn't even have a luxury division.

You're all over the map here, and I really don't know what you are talking about, the miata is fucking ugly, the tailights are hideous, and the front squinty chopped off design makes it look stupid. But comparing it to the headlights of a brand new fully loaded 4 series BMW is beyond daft.

Also in terms of your broad statement of Euro Vs. JDM, lets look at something aside from Mercedes, BMW and Audi. For example (all 2015 vehicles):

vs.

^Please tell me how Peugeot is doing any better than Mazda.

Vs.

Also please explain how this:

is so much more drastically advanced than this:

Lol why are you so hanged up on lights? I couldn't give less fuck about lights and I'd hate to pay extra for some played out LED strips. I'm totally happy with a simple xenon projector headlight.

The lighting technology is just a drop in the bucket. Check out Audi's matrix LED and BMW's laser light technology. Don't think any of the Japanese marque have anything like that ready for market consumption. Also, compare the new iDrive to anything Lexus/Infiniti/Acura has, they don't stand a chance in sophistication and complexity. You could almost argue complexity for complexity's sake is a moot point, but it is what it is. The Japanese can also make amazingly high tech and complex cars like LF-A, GT-R, NSX but the major point is, the Japanese do it once in a while, whereas the Germans do it consistently. In a market environment like this, do stuff well once in a while doesn't stack up. Not moving forward is the same as moving backwards.
