Its early in the season. I'm happy saving my edge card days after such a good day. Even though another one could have been in there. I need to ease into the season at my age, and after 19 years of riding, my body lets me know haha. I'll need to really concentrate on getting into good shape for next season, as this year work just made it too hard to happen.

Friday was popping off everything fun under Sky Chair at Cypress.
Saturday was blasting through white out conditions (and waist deep pow) near Elfin lakes.
Sunday was negotiating sketch lines through Spanky's. No-fall zones are serious business right now. Stick with Ruby and Diamond; Saphire only if you enter from the Glacier side.

9.5/10 weekend.

:nono: not feeling very sendy?

Very sendy for a day, not so much the next after a few tomahawks.

laughed way too much on this comment lol.

Went up last Friday and it was good, but as the day moved forward the snow started to turn into ice.

320icar 12-14-2015 08:00 PM

Jokes aside, anywhere that would be a good place to shop for very entry level ski boots? Renting aside. Picked up a set of new ski's that were marked down with bindings for way to cheap to refuse. Figured it would be a good year to get started.

underscore 12-14-2015 08:57 PM

^ check out 2nd hand sports equipment stores, a lot of times people buy gear, use it once, and then never use it again.

Looking to purchase a new helmet for this season and not sure what to look for. Price range wise, I'd like to stay under $100.

DragonChi 12-14-2015 09:45 PM

Costco has Bolle helmets for ~$50. The one in Burnaby has no more Larges last I checked.

Whatever fits best.

Unless you're looking specifically for MIPS or if you're a ski racer and need a chin guard, the best helmet is the one that you're going to actually wear.

320icar 12-14-2015 10:06 PM

richmond still has all the sizes ^^^ (costco)

fishCak3s 12-15-2015 10:12 AM

I would agree with getting a helmet that fits and is comfortable.

Taking half a day tmr to go up cypress, woot!

Going up to Whistler tomorrow for 3 days! First time riding this season, I am beyond excited!

Haven't been to Whistler for a few years now, last time was during Olympics. Anything I should note that's changed for the better or worse?

  • New chair on Crystal Ridge. Slightly longer than the old triple and makes sessioning the Glacier much faster.
  • They sometimes punch passes for dirty lining Spanky's
  • They renovated Rendezvous
  • The lines on 7th are longer than ever
  • Harmony is now a 6 person chair up from 4
  • New cabins on Whis Ghandi
  • Franz's is icier than ever
  • RWDI forecasts on the website are 100% bullshit and the old in-house forecasting was way better
  • Speed patrol seems more anal these days, especially when riding out towards the Village at the end of the day
  • You have to scan your RFID pass on every lift (with a few exceptions). Keep your pass in your left breast pocket on your left sleeve pocket and don't put anything else in it.

underscore 12-15-2015 09:48 PM

Fuck RFID passes, pieces of shit never work right and always fuck up the lines.

Oh really, I was a little in awe of this. I just figured it was the next wave in tech.

Sucks it doesn't work correctly

skiiipi 12-15-2015 11:49 PM

Spending new years in Banff
Got 3 days to ski
Should I hop between Louise and Sunshine?
Or just stick to one. ..if so which one should I stick to?

To be fair I've only used the ones at Big White, so they might be better elsewhere, but their system is absolute garbage. Whoever decided to put it in should be smacked with a ski pole.

TOS'd 12-16-2015 07:48 AM

I've never had any issues with the RFID pass at whister, haven't tried Big White though.

Anyone have ski/snowboard rental coupons from any of the local mountains? I'd like to try out skiing and I know seymour gives out a coupon book with their season pass.

guurl 12-16-2015 01:50 PM

Can get them at Sportchek, shops on W4th. I spent around $300 for mine as I sit a lot and want goretex pants.

ancient_510 12-16-2015 05:56 PM

I'm on my third Whis RFID card.
First one mysteriously stopped working right as I was about to load the peak.
Second one became unreadable from water damage.

I wish they spent $1 more and issued plastic ones like Octopus.

The lifties on Red chair have a seasons pass on a stick. If you fumble with your pass or the gate doesn't open right away, they reach in and scan the pass on a stick. They use it to keep the flow of people moving fast during the morning rush upload from Creekside.

Even though the gates seem to be 99% reliable, 1% failure is still a lot. Of 3600 people per hour (Harmony max capacity) times 5 hours open in a day means 180 people that screw up the line.

What really gets me about the RFID pass things is why they don't have 100% rollout on the gates.
I've heard part of the reason was to prevent people from spending all day in-bounds after buying a backcountry access pass... but what's the point of that if there are no gates on a bunch of the lifts still?

I was up on Cypress yesterday as well. No line up on the Eagle side, simply hop on, come down the mountain then back up immediately.

westopher 12-17-2015 12:11 PM

Someone was killed on the S2S just outside whistler today. :(
Drive safe when you head up please guys.
