The hit is real. But it’s impossible to be this bad. He has to be doing something very wrong.

On my 3, I think the worst was hope to merrit which needed 52% (charged to 67% at hope, arrived to Merrit with 15 to go through that 120km stretch. It’s with hill and whatnot, but doing the same stretch in summer is about 40%.

So just under 25% hit.

On newer models with heat pump, the difference is minimal.

My wife’s furthest work drive takes about 20% on our plaid. During the cold snap, it was 21% for round trip.

Does Tesla have a battery warming function you turn on? Or does it do it when you precondition the car on the plug? Your coworker probably doesn't know to do that before hand? It's unfortunately part of the EV life.

I mean he’s a 60 year old man. So it could be user error but I don’t think he’s that stupid. He’s a manager of our info tech

He parks it outside because in his garage is full of hoarder Chinese shit. Like almost every other Guangdong Asian I know

Anyways I’ll see what he says after the dealership deals with his car.

Was the Y plugged in and preconditioned prior to departing to TnT? It makes a big difference vs driving straight to TnT in a cold battery

My 3 on the other hand was absolutely garbage yesterday in the heavy snow. I knew it was going to be a long day so I charged it all the way to 100% and scheduled my departure so my cabin and batteries will be warm.

By the time I finished my day, total km driven was about 50, with 50% battery usage.

Owning an EV for the first time and driving it around this winter has made me not want another EV ever until technology gets to a point where the range is like 1000km lol

That depends on the situation.

Last week, when we had that cold snap, I plugged in my 3 and it indicates my batteries were warming up, but I believe that was from a charging prospective to speed it up.

But when I had my scheduled departure for 330am, it was preconditioning my battery some time before 300am

He doesn’t even have a 240v at the house. Only the 120v. He figure he lives in east van and goes to Canada place is only like 5km so why bother with the 240v.

I don’t know how any of that shit works with the pre conditioning so I think the geezer just keeps it plugged in and then drove it. Not sure why it’s broken now, I wonder maybe because at 120 it’s not even charging and the damn thing has basically 0 juice in it

Edit : I feel partially responsible cuz he asked me if he should buy the new RX or this model Y. I told him model Y cuz the new RX 4 cylinder is untested and likely not reliable. Fuck me. (Plus he’s a cheap ass old man anyways and I knew he would love not paying for gas)

Does he also throw on two winter tires and says it'll be good enough for the snowy winters?

It sounds like he isn't plugging in to charge routinely and only does so when it's nearly empty. If that's the case he needs to get in the habit of plugging it in at every opportunity because it takes days to charge from empty to full using 120V.

A 5km commute shouldn't break a sweat on any normal Tesla regardless of weather condition.

EV fanatics should really just accept there are shortcomings to the whole thing instead of trying to justify it. The quicker the flaws are recognized, the higher the priority on these things and the quicker a solution is figured out. Of course there are physics that you can't just pound into submission.

so on that heavy snow day, you theoretically could have only gotten ~100km on a single charge?

that's more or less inline with my old man coworker. sheeesh, i thought they solved this fucking problem with the heat pump crap and the LFP battery?

This 100%. Would be far less annoying just simply being objective of the tradeoffs on either ICE/EV. Like this is way more bearable to read than what was posted previously:

Quote:
Admittedly it's a steep learning curve for new EV owners to understand how to operate in the cold.

Sure, there ICE cars also increase in fuel consumption in the cold, but agree its nowhere near the discrepancy and unpredictability of an EV.

It's really all a matter of habits. Once an owner understand the tendencies of their particular car in the cold (e.g. if it has a heat pump or not, which would affect battery) as well as battery technology and how the cold impacts range, it becomes less of an issue and they can work around it to some extent.

Bro, you’re just not doing it right! :roll eyes

The irony is that the vast majority of Tesla owners seem to be the type that they purposely bought this vehicle so they have to use their brains even less than an ICE vehicle

Now you throw in conditioning the battery and having to “plan” additionally to do basic driving in the lower mainland lol. If weather trends continue you’re gonna be seeing a whole lot of dead Teslas on the sides of the road
