The range is not that good and there are enough options in the small space with the MX-30, Cooper SE, and the upcoming 500E.

From a vid I watched like a few weeks ago, I think Rivian has about 1.5y left in cash from their burn rate. Hate to say it but I doubt they will survive / release these models. They are still loosing money on each car + their inventory # is going up, so they aren't selling + if they aren't profitable now, they aren't gonna be profitable if they make a cheaper car / they can't afford to make a cheaper car. they seem like one of the least scammy ones but back to building a car company ain't as easy as it sounds. O yea and even Apple with deep pockets pulled out after blowing billions on the project. I recall it would cost apple about $125000 to build each car, so even at that price they ain't making any money, let alone servicing, support, charging infrastructure etc.

Meanwhile I'm trying to get a job from them to try the automotive industry, but even with a referral they won't even entertain my application and the position remains unfilled. Their advertised salary range is also lower than industry average for the position as well.

But Rivian's on the verge of shutting down their production line on the R1 to make architectural-level cost optimizations. That burn rate isn't going to hold.

Their salary was rumoured to be below industry standard, but industry standard in tech has slumped lots in the last 12 months, to the point that I won't be able to find another job that would pay me the same right now.

The R3X looks great on the street, so much presence.
The R2 is a bit dowdy. The R1 looks imposing because partly of it's size, but the R2 doesn't have that going for it.

Not sure why we need a UBC researcher to do this calculation. Any of us here on RS could have done the math to arrive at a similar conclusion. In fact, many of us have already done that here in this thread, myself included LOL~
BRB while I apply to become a UBC researcher...

Yup ... so many threads about this topic and when you break even for EV vs. ICE. A 'UBC Researcher' kinda gives it a bit more credence but then again, maybe not. There are still a lot of variables.
I'm sure your calculations are pretty spot on.

That UBC study is a nice read since it validates my rough calculation when deciding between an ICE and EV Soul (which is pretty much a boxier Kona).
Although I also determined that ICE was more financially sound, the EV powertrain gave the Soul a smoother, more powerful, and overall better driving experience over the ICE variant. Not sure what Hyundai / Kia were thinking putting 201hp/291 lb-ft of instant torque in a small car, but that setup translated to a ton more fun over the 175hp/195 lb-ft engine.

BRB while I apply to become a UBC researcher... | Considering how many people who barely drive claim they need to buy an EV due to gas prices it's not surprising that they need a professional for this lol.

It is entirely reasonable to want to buy an EV over ICE for many of the other qualities and advantages that EVs have over ICE. But it is as underscore says: Quote:

i drive anywhere from 70-150 km per day. i did the math 6 years ago when gas was $1.50/l and it was a wash per month at the time for a 2016 sonata vs a 2018 model 3.
