Basically has everything except the speed maybe?

Or be okay with just slightly bigger than X3 and go for Ioniq 5 N...

Not because I work for Hyundai, but I geniuely think the Ioniq 5 N is sick lol...

Or... just buy XC90 Recharge if you need SUV ... buuuuuuuuuut honestly... go for the..... Volvo V60 T8 eAWD Polestar (0 to 60 4.1sec) , oh gawd.... lol I need someone to get a V60 so I can sit in one... and shoot lots of pics/vids of it lolol

Yeah but even us shanghainese don’t even speak shanghainese without having a stupid ass accent nowadays. My cousins in Shanghai speak shanghainese with a mandarin accent now. While my shanghainese is still the same as the crap my parents spoke in the 80s and 90s…. It’s a bastardized dialect and it’s dying more and more everyday.

One great thing about Cantonese and specifically HK Cantonese is that you Guangdong assholes seem to defend it religiously. Like tai ping rebellion fanaticism if anyone tells you guys that you should be speaking mandarin.

Good for you ! I wish we kept that

I don't like the looks, but I can't argue with how much better it fits my needs and wants compared to a TMY. I don't have to look at it while driving because the cabin is just so good.

My brother thinks it looks great, my mom thought it looked fine, it's just me. But I'm the outlier in the family and the more white washed one so maybe the whole designed for Asians thing is real.

Nope we haven't. Wife isn't interested in Korean cars, plus we 100% aren't interested in a new EV. She thinks the Ionic is ugly anyways and it's not really bigger than the X3

Not interested in the Volvo either. It really boils down to iX or X5 plugin.

We aren't even in a hurry to get it. Wife is going back to work on Monday but work is looking like a shit show. The only benefit is FT WFH but we both have a feeling this job won't last. She's either gonna get laid off or she can't stand the BS any longer and wants to leave. The next job is most likely going to be hybrid and that's when a PHEV or EV would make more sense to us.

So really we are test driving now and when time comes we can make an informed decision quickly

My wife and I speak really watered down canto. Terrible white-people accents. We're still insisting on speaking it - shittily - to our kid so he'll at least have some connection to his roots.

Off-topic: for ya'll sticking your kids in chinese school, are you doing canto or mandarin? I don't prefer mando but i'm not blind to the fact that China's like a rolling tank: in future mandarin's going be hella more useful. And at least, not getting turned away for a test drive like uncle EvoFire here.

We had one show up at the last meet at the Starbucks on Sea Island Way... who was it I forgot.

But man that was a nice car.

We stick our 5 year old in a Cantonese class that's once a week for an hour - they practice writing and do some basic speaking exercises. We've also started watching Bluey in Cantonese and she actually likes it that way even though I doubt she understands even half of it.

The way they speak Cantonese makes me feel about mine as it's really obvious how terrible mine is when I hear theirs.

We did get accepted into Mandarin elementary school but it's a 30 min drive each way to get there so that's a No from me. We're sending her to French immersion instead and we hope she picks up enough Cantonese that eventually Mandarin won't be too hard for her to learn.

I don't think dark went over to look at the car so he could've missed it. We were all too busy enjoying the KFC :lol

Anyhow, Volvo Richmond right now has a 2022 V60 Recharge right now for sale. I can't tell from photos if it's a 2022.5 with the the updated motor and larger battery, but a 2022.5 with the Sensus infotainment is arguably the best version of the wagon since it has more features built into the infotainment. Their current asking price feels slightly high though - think these were ~$71k new before federal rebate.

Most plug-in V60s sold here are PE models, so this R-Design is a pretty rare spec. They're just as quick as the PE and only missing the brakes, Ohlins, and strut bars. It's quite the sleeper.

I find the iX's looks questionable but my parents really like the styling 'It's looks really different and stands out next to all the Teslas' were their sentiment on it. When I watch HK car reviews, the reviewers generally prefer unconventional styling because it gives off a stronger visual presence on the road.

I would choose the X5 plug-in over the iX. B58 + PHEV powertrain seems like a winning combo if you have a short commute but still want the flexibility of driving far when needed.

When the time comes, I'm definitely going to teach my kids Cantonese since it is a much harder language to learn and speak. I don't think they will be able to write much but at least they should be able to read a newspaper article or subtitles.

Mandarin, in contrast, is easy to pick up if you have a Cantonese base.

I was running around in Richmond the whole weekend, mostly around the Asian malls to Richmond Center, and somehow I kept running into these Solterra / b4Zx! On Saturday alone, I must have come across over 10 sightings.

Of course, traffic was very unusual since No. 3 Road hardly had any cars. I'm not surprised by that because it was the start of Spring Break. But the sheer number of Solterra / b4Zx twins... That was mind-blowing.

Yes it's a DIY'd Wildnerness - I don't think the car's lifted beyond the more-rugged tires they put on those base wheels. It seems a bit silly but they're supposedly quite decent at softroading, so I wouldn't be surprised if Subaru follows through with a real Wilderness one day.

Aren't EV's supposed to have the lowest possible rolling resistance tires? This ain't that... as if the range isn't already bad enough on these things.

I wanna say the vast majority of aftermarket modifications ruin the performance of a stock car.. aside from stickers which add +5 HP

The # of Solterra/bz4x out here in Coquitlam is jaw-dropping.

Toyota faithful are getting suckered in. Rav4 hybrid/prime/etc are unavailable, but here's an EV with even better fuel efficiency that you can purchase today, and you get access to up to 9k in government rebates making it as expensive as a rav4. I know because it happened to a family member who only buys Toyotas.

He regrets it deeply now.

Not sure if we are seeing the consequences of early adopters to EV's now, it's been about 10-12 yrs since EV started getting popular. CBC has stories of many Nissan Leafs turning into bricks which could result in a class action legal suit. I feel that in the last 2-3 months, there has been a noticeable significant change of attitude towards EV's. Now we have to find answers to the question, 'what do we do with these cars and batteries?'.

I assume Tesla tech is a bit better in terms of battery degradation and hasn't seen the large numbers of dead batteries after ~ 10 yrs.

Nissan really screwed the pooch with the leaf as there was no battery management with them and they prematurely ruined their batteries. Tesla has not had the same issues as Nissan because of the built in tech they developed to manage the temperature that the battery stays at.

As for the question of what to do with the cars at the end of their life, the vast majority of the battery can be recycled and there are companies out there currently doing this.

68style 03-20-2024 09:13 AM

A lot of orphaned cars out there... not the traditional way either, usually it's because the company that made them went out of business... but huge manufacturers just abandoning models within their lineup.

A friend of mine at Toyota even told me the Supra is slated for that demise as well. Toyota just wants it to go away and barely supports any techs trying to get answers about them when issues arise and BMW obviously doesn't want anything to do with it either lol

Hasn't anyone figured out replacement leaf packs by now? I hear of lithium swaps for a lot of other ev/ hybrids already

Simply replacing the battery on the car doesn't fix the underlying issue as that battery would eventually shit the bed too. Without proper cooling on the older batteries, they will just keep degrading far too quickly. There is a reason why you don't see any Nissan Leafs older than 2015 on the road.
