Wish Plugshare’s parking info was actually up to date lol
Half the time the free chargers have paid parking

A Better Routeplanner is fantastic for road trips.

PlugShare for me as well, but yeah you have to go into the comments to see if there's some stipulation like employee-only or is paid parking.

Wait, why do you ask? Did you wind up getting an EV / PHEV?!

Love that ABRP lets me specify stations and networks since there are some free ones I like to use. I do find it too conservative for road trips, find myself charging less than it suggests

These days the OEM nav planners are getting really good - especially BMW

Yah, I did take the plunge, upgraded my DD, first dip into the PHEV world. Nothing really to post about, not particularly sexy or hot, just hoping to save some $$ in gas. It has a baby EV engine that goes for 25-30 kms, good for commute to work and back, grocery getter, and qualifies for HOV sticker! This one you can plug in overnight for full charge with wall plug so I don't have to worry about updating to a 220V charger. 2016 A3 etron with about 85K kms at an off brand dealer, it was a trade in, pretty clean. I was asking in other thread and indeed, some dealers don't report to Carfax so that's why there is a period of blank in car history.

Well I've clearly been living under a rock. Audi has had phev since 2016?!? I don't see Audi phev mentioned much in the YouTube car review channels that I watch from time to time. My friend recently got a Q5 phev.... Is phev available for everything Audi offers these days?

Yah, this was one of the first PHEV from Audi in 2016. But as with all traditional automakers, they kinda meandered around the EV world, gone full on EV direction, and then turned on a dime back to hybrids now. There is a Q5 PHEV and I think they do offer PHEV for most of their cars ... except the R8 . They are now rebranding their naming with even numbers as EV and odd numbers as ICE ... I think.

That's dope, congrats!

On saving money, you'll want to make sure any public charging is by kwh rather than by hour:

Home charging: ~4 cents per km at 15c/kwh
Public charging by kwh for all PHEV: ~10 cents per km at 40c/kwh
Gas only: 13 cents per km based on 7L/100km, $1.90 per liter
Public charging by hour for older PHEV: ~18 cents per km, $2/hr at most Richmond/Vancouver stations (more expensive than gas)

Older PHEV only charge at 3kw, so $2/hr at 3kw means is 60c/kwh.
This affects ETron, Ford, Chevy Volt, pre 2023 BMW, and most Toyota.
=> Only cheaper if public station is by kwh.

Newer PHEV can take full 6kw+, 2/hr means 30c/kw.
Some RAV4 Prime, FCA 4XE, newer BMW/MB/Audi.
=> Cheaper than gas whether station is by kwh or by hour.

audi.... with more complications!? and their initial PHEV offering too!??!

What are you trying to reproduce the first gen allroad for reliability lawls?

i mean I'm certifiably insane buying a hitlerbox NEW and it already has all these little niggles. I wouldn't even dream of touching something like that unless you're just a glutton for punishment.

And well lookee lookee, here's a very low mileage 2020 Q5 PHEV for sale too: https://www.autotrader.ca/a/audi/q5/...=100&modalXS=1

EV range is only 17 miles per Car and Driver (https://www.caranddriver.com/reviews...y-the-numbers/) but for some folks (like me) that's actually enough for most days.

Q5 PHEV is like B tier.
Low range but u can refill in public and still save money because it charges at 7kw.

If you're looking for newer luxury PHEV, MB GLC350e/GLE450e are S tier.
They are the only PHEV that fast charge; tops up 60km in 25 minutes rather than 3 hours.
=> Helps a lot when you're running a ton of errands of the weekend

Hahaha, yes and no.

Managers actually do want more people to experience the Ioniq 5N, but head office is sending us like 1 car every 6 to 8 weeks. If we made 1 of the sent one a test drive unit... we could be potentially have no 5N available for 4 months or longer...

We moved a total of like 4 units last year, everytime we put in an order for like 5 in whatever color, they send us 1 with a random color like our orders are irrelevant hahahaha

It's not. You want at least 35km, ideally 50km+. 30km won't be enough for you to go to Richmond and back, especially if you make a second stop.

We burn through the battery range on the X5 relatively quickly and we have an actual 50km range during the winter.

TBH, if you are on PHEV, you wouldn't want to do that many trip solely on battery only.

There are only so many times a battery can charge and discharge before it starts to really deteriorate. Pure BEV with large batteries don't suffer much because their battery is so large that by the time you run through enough cycles to make a difference, hundred of thousands of KM have passed, but on PHEV where they have a tiny battery, the best practice is actually let the battery+electric engine to assist the gas engine in order to maximize the MPG.

8yr 160k warranty. They'll replace it if it drops below 70% iirc. It's 2 years old at this point I'll just milk it.

Does this mean the battery has been replaced once already?

Low key, time based aging hits EV batteries way harder than charging to 100% or fast charging

So get this….

My old man calls me today saying he’s stranded in Costco. His Lexus rx400h won’t start.

I said fine I’ll call bcaa and they’ll either jump start him or just do a battery swap right there.

He calls me 10 minutes later saying he’s got it started somehow and to cancel the bcaa.

Now I’m concerned that the ICE battery is probably going because he only drives in the city and he’s often stupid with leaving his headlights on.

I rush to his house in east van, grab his car and then take it all the way back to my place in Richmond and buy a new Costco AGM battery.

Since I got the car I also swapped his wipers and did an oil change.

I bring it back to him and he’s like it’s weird how it starts after 10 minutes.

I’m like wait a minute…. I should have fucking clued in. The car was actually running but because he’s parked the ICE didn’t kick in and he was running in EV mode. It’s dead silent and the old coot is deaf. Fuck I’m so stupid. I should have told him to put it in drive and see if it even moves before I do this whole Shabang.

TLDR: don’t buy geezers hybrids or EVs. They’ll call you asking stupid question and it’ll drive you insane

Oh by the way I went to go get the battery tested afterwards and of course it’s fucking fine.

Go refund, I didn't know Costco is energizer. My car didn't start a few days ago too and I was gonna buy a new battery. But I'm trying to see I can up size the battery.
