lowkey, this happened to me once when i first got the tundra. BUT your dad probably had the car for awhile now, shouldn't he be familiar with the hybrid system.

The only car that looks sort of bad is my Lexus Camry. That’s cuz I leave it outside and before it was spy balloons daily (this is death!!!) so it’s got the usual outside car issues
But otherwise yah, I bought him this 2008 RX and it now has 200,000kms on it. Hasn’t missed a beat in all these years. It’s the old school Lexus that they don’t build anymore.
It even has decent quality plastic covers underneath the engine bay to protect the underbody. Not sure who’s off-roading these RXs but hey it’s there. They used to not skimp on such things. My wife’s 2018 RX doesn’t have these covers .

Ironic how it "died" at Costco. Just for you.

Even at rounded 70%, it's still "good" by their definition. But the whole performance, as far as gas saving is concerned, will lose quite a bit.
Someone I know has a PHEV and he "milked" it like you said. Fully charged overnight, it shows 83%, but his ICE kicks in much more often since the battery can no longer supply with enough power for many things to a point it's like his ICE is always running and he went from 6L/100km average to 8.9L/100km driving pretty much the same route/condition and everything.

I think it'll difficult for the X5 45e to show lower than 70% battery health - AFAIK there's a software lock on the 45e batteries in NA vehicles since the same battery yields more range in Euro-spec models. I assume the software will just enable more of buffered range when the battery health starts dropping to compensate for the bad cells.

He calls me 10 minutes later saying he’s got it started somehow and to cancel the bcaa.
Now I’m concerned that the ICE battery is probably going because he only drives in the city and he’s often stupid with leaving his headlights on.
I rush to his house in east van, grab his car and then take it all the way back to my place in Richmond and buy a new Costco AGM battery.
Since I got the car I also swapped his wipers and did an oil change.
I bring it back to him and he’s like it’s weird how it starts after 10 minutes.
I’m like wait a minute…. I should have fucking clued in. The car was actually running but because he’s parked the ICE didn’t kick in and he was running in EV mode. It’s dead silent and the old coot is deaf. Fuck I’m so stupid. I should have told him to put it in drive and see if it even moves before I do this whole Shabang.
TLDR: don’t buy geezers hybrids or EVs. They’ll call you asking stupid question and it’ll drive you insane
Oh by the way I went to go get the battery tested afterwards and of course it’s fucking fine. | long play for your dad to get you to provide free maintenance.
well played dad

Battery and charging is now at a point where it is family usable without anxiety.
On EV9 / Escalade iQ / Lucid Gravity / Porsche; you can road trip anywhere and not have to think even in worst case conditions.
500-800km is still 300-500km cold
15 minute refills is just 20-30 in winter
Supercharger access for all
In like 5k miles of EV road tripping I have never not been able to charge at Electrify America/Tesla/Chargepoint

The electric motor has enough juice around town and only when I'm climbing a big steep hill like Boundary or Royal Oak from a stand still, or I'm trying to overtake someone at 100km/h is it painful in EV mode.
There's a test that is built in to the car's systems but it takes something like 24 hours to run. I tried triggering it once with a friend and well... Let's just say it took us sometime to reset the car as there is no exit process
We'll see where things are in a few years. As it stands the car has been in service for 3 years. So there's still 5 years to kill the battery lol.

But if they improve on the NVH and suspension, that's going to be a big plus.

Speaking of Ching Chong cars. Holy shit. That’s pretty impressive beating the taycan turbo S by 20 seconds. Considering they only started making cars 3 years ago, Chinese EVs are insane. No wonder they don’t let them in here. It’ll kill all you motherfuckers…. And then we take it. mmmmm!!!! |

My first impression of most of the newer Chinese EVs is incredibly positive and most of them are already more than competitive in global markets.
My main outstanding hesitation with them right now is their long-term reliability. Given how fast new models get churned out, I'm not sure how rigorous their durability tests are.
