On cars: XC90 is crazy problematic, check engine light is on even more often than VW.

On charging: it's actually a lot cheaper to solve that we think.

Take a standard 5-15 120V outlet and convert to a 6-20 for like $50-100, gets you 4kw.

Use a webasto turbocord charger.

Several people at work recently got the XC90 and it's a major lemon.

If you only drive 18000 km a year do you even save that much going electric? What about some fast ish wagons, I'm sure rs7, e63 will have no problem towing occasionally.

18000km / 10l/100km = 1800 liters at $1.75 =$3150, even if your mpg is ass at 20l/100km that's $6300 a year $525 month

T8 PHEV is a total POS, T6 twincharged was a total POS (supercharger failures melt the car), EX90 is looking like a disaster too.

@radeonboy - Do you anticipate these problems on your twin charged Volvo?

roasts the cats *** HAHA but roasting the car is funnier

- drinks oil and coolant
- eats turbo and supercharger
- stretches chains

then add a buncha hybrid shit to it for T8 PHEV

I think she can acclimatize to the size of an X5, otherwise, would the wife consider one size down? That will open up options like the NX, XC60, X3 30e etc.
The size below can't tow the S2000, so that kinda kills it. And you want to know the kicker? She doesn't even drive 95% of the time, it's mostly me.

She hasn't even acclimatized to the A4!

LMAO maybe it is because she wants the Cayenne after seeing a friend's Cayenne GTS! I am not touching RR with a 10 foot pole though! Although used ones are kinda going down fast in price...

A X5 40i is roughly 10k less for similar year/mileage/options out the door, and 10k is a lot of gas money when you can't take advantage of the EV part of the equation like we do. 8 hours a day only gets you about 18-20km of range, and none on the weekends, so easily 1/3 to 1/2 of your regular usage would still be on gas.

We've had the car for about 6 months now and put 7k on it. We've put in $70 of gas for the first 5 months, then Christmas happened, between the gatherings and activities and kids not being in school, we've had to put in another $70 in the last month. We are on the plug for easily 12-15 hours a day to keep up with our usage, and we will still empty the battery if we have more than 2 outings a day. The battery will also not make it to Langley and back from Vancouver.

The HOV sticker is relatively useless for us because we almost never take the car on the highway with just one person. We always have the kids in tow so we may as well not need it.

There are other options in the market like the Volvo XC90 Recharge and the GLE450e and Lexus RX500h. None of them will solve your lack of ability to charge. None of them will be as "sporty" as the X5 or Cayenne, though the X5 is already stretching the definition of sporty imo. The XC90 has been around for awhile already so you should be able to find one. The GLE450e is new for 2024 so probably out of your range as well, ditto the RX.

Keep in mind these cars are relatively rare, there's more X5 than Cayenne, and some of the Cayennes have really weird option loadouts. There's also the caveat of X5's missing options due to the chip shortage and makes looking for cars really testing for your patience.

TL;DR - Get a regular one with the options you want, whether if it's Cayenne or X5.

Your demographic is a little different from ours.

And fuck lol.... range rover and towing long range. He's gonna need a tow for the RR and a tow for the tow.
The XC90 and the Lexus can't tow either so those don't meet my criteria. I think you're right that the GL450e probably falls into the "too big" range as well.

Also hell naw to the RR haha.

RS6/E63 can't tow (legally) unfortunately. Also, I'm fine with going all gas, but guess who isn't.

Maybe hobz is right, I should trade in the wife not the car.

You are 100% correct, she heard that PHEV can drive "Free" but doesn't understand the detail and math

Man just tell your wife what she wants doesn't exist.

If my GF was putting all that down on me I'd tell her the only vehicle that even remotely matches what she wants is a POS Cayenne Hybrid and we're not buying it, end of story, design your own SUV and we'll drive that when you're done OR be more reasonable.

I literally cannot charge the car at home. Townhouse only has 60(70?) amp service. And carport is 30ft away from house. Also no exterior outlet so would have to open a window and run the cable out that way

You don't even know how it started, she wanted a 3-row SUV in the size of a VW Golf that is hybrid or electric with range to go to Seattle and back without charging and is less than $45,000.

I didn't experience any issues with my T8, but I was prepared for the potential issues going into the car. My driving style is more on the slower side and the Volvo travelled 75% of the time in EV-only mode, so potential issues will probably take longer to appear since the engine sees less wear and tear than with an ICE-only powertrain.

Volvo updated the powertrain sometime in 2022 and got rid of the supercharger. This means reliability should be better, but likely it's still subpar compared to the Germans.

That said, I generally don't recommend Volvos to friends/family because I don't want their grief directed at me if something goes wrong. I knew what I was getting into when I got the Volvo, and I was ready for the consequences.

if she just wanna feel like she's saving the environment and isn't even responsible for charging it
just slap a hybrid badge on the thing or get a mild hybrid

probs doesn't want the x5 cuz it looks too trucky/boxy and that makes her feel like a mom
probs just wants something fashionable

Plus she’s super sweet and nice. D’s got a good wife, nothing wrong with wanting a Porsche. Especially since you’re such a VAG guy…. In fact you probably lead her down this road.

could you just rent a 25/3500 from enterprise for a day or two?

enterprise gave us a F350 6.7 diesel for like $70 a day

Uhaul really charge by mile.

If you really wanna be cheap, find a rental location where they just park a bunch of cars on an aisle and you can pick.
There might be a pickup with a hitch .. and if you ask, they will definitely rent you a pickup to hit their utilization metric cuz no one wants them at the airport.

You'll only pay the fullsize rate (35 a day?) and get unlimited mileage. Contract prohibits towing but

I think by end of year 2026, we will have 45k CAD/30k USD Taycan, R1S, Lucid

Early Model 3 is already the new hood car - Altima/Chrysler 300 is out.

She doesn't even drive 95% of the time, it's mostly me.
I was wondering if it was really "her" vehicle when you said you're the one driving it to work lol.

That just makes slapping a PHEV badge onto something else even easier. She'll never notice it isn't actually one when she's never using it. It sounds like she really wants a wagon or something so just get one of those. Renting a truck to tow the S2000 is gonna be cheaper overall anyways and then she doesn't have to look at a big vehicle the other 360 days/year.
