Until someone else either comes up with a charging network that works as well and covers as vast an area as Tesla or simply signs up to use the Tesla network, nobody will be a serious competitor of theirs. When it comes to EV's the car is secondary to the charging infrastructure.

The Canadian oil and gas industry's retailers (e.g. Petro Canada etc.) are shifting their strategy to build out an infrastructure of EV charging stations. It will take some time due to the balance between having to deliver on gas to the current market demand but also juggling how and where to roll out said EV infrastructure. Never mind the challenges of the labour market in Alberta, but also, one challenge is how do you turn a gas station into a sexy destination to charge your car? Some interesting challenges for sure.

In California, the heat is causing a crisis in the Electrical Grid. There is a warning to use electricity sparingly which affects EV's ... hmmmmm. So what do you know, EV's can have energy issues just like ICE engines with shortage of gas.

California is the first state to make electric cars mandatory. Now it’s telling owners not to charge them
https://fortune.com/2022/09/01/calif...charge-newsom/

But now state officials are telling drivers not to charge their electric cars during the upcoming Labor Day weekend, when temperatures are expected to hit triple digits for millions of residents, putting a strain on the power grid.

My EV has a range of 100 to 120 km. Until now, going to Bellingham in the EV was challenging. Not anymore. Quite a few DC Fast Chargers in the Bellingham area. Electrify America (Vokswagen's penance for cheating) is pretty darn nice. They have a couple of them at the Fred Meyer parking lot. A couple of fast chargers from Shell (formerly Greenlots) at the Coop next to the college. To top off, Bellis Fair has about ten level 2 chargers (half not working, atm, but they're there). I like the fast chargers in the US. Most of them are pay by kWh, which is great for EV's with smaller batteries. Much cheaper than per minute. I get to 80% under $2.75 USD. At Bellis Fair, I walk to the McD's to get something and use their wifi. If the car isn't fully charged, I go to the mall. On a full charge, I make it back home. I wouldn't try going past Bellingham, but normal EV's can easily make it far with the alternative networks out there. When I was at the Shell Recharge Station, I had a hard time trying to get the BC Hydro app to work (it's supposed to work in the US.) I gave up and loaded funds onto the Greenlots card I had since day one. Anyway............. getting to Bellingham to buy cheap gas and only spend like under $5.00 is a win. I even go to Silver Reef and charge there, lol.

I take the back roads to save energy. I have it all worked out. Pacific Highway, Ferndale, Portal Way, behind Blaine and to the Peace Arch. The route is quiet and nobody else is on it. I actually go by the rear of the tiny mall out where the Enrolment Center is.

Before I discovered the backroads, I charged at the Custer Rest Area. Two free of "charge" level 2 chargers there. I've never seen it used the times I went.

Thanks for sharing that. I've been hesitant to take my EV down there out of fear of payment issues at the chargers, so it's good to know that you're having a good experience. Those backroads sound like fun and a good alternative to go the scenic route and save a bit on energy.

The payment method is really good. With Electrify America, I set up the account using my Home Trust Visa. The one that doesn't charge transaction fees. I set it up with $20.00. As soon as the balance goes below $5.00, they automatically reload the running balance back to $20.00. Same thing with the Shell Recharge. I have the RFID card from when they used to be Greenlots, but you don't need the card. Just download the Shell Recharge app. There are plenty of level 2 chargers on that way to and from Bellingham. There's this medical centre just outside Ferndale. It's called Unity Care. I have yet to see anyone charging there, either. It's free. Level 2 takes time. On the way back, if I'm in a hurry, I just take I5 back and charge at the Superstore DC Fast Charger in White Rock/Delta. There's quite a few fast chargers on the way back on the Canadian side. Tynehead Esso, even Cloverdale. I take 168th from 8th avenue then 160th all the way up to Hwy 1. Because the battery on my EV is small, I push it till it's less than 15%. Best bang for buck when using pay per minute chargers. Superstore in Coquitlam or Queen's Park are options on the other side of the Fraser. I have a level 2 charger at home, so as long as I get home, I'm fine.

Oh, the Electrify America app is really easy to use.

Volkswagen basically agreed to start a network of chargers across America as part of the settlement with the government. It has grown by leaps and bounds. Pretty successful.

I often wonder how much money EV owners spend on shit when they’re occupying themselves while their car charges lol

Either buying things online on their phone out of boredom or walking into places and impulse buying or eating

For me anyway, 95% of the time I charge my car at home with 110v, and 4.5% of the time I'm charging at Superstore / Walmart where I'm doing a grocery run anyway. The remaining 0.5% where I'm in the middle of nowhere I just browse Reddit / Social Media inside my car with the A/C or heat on.

I wouldn't consider an EV if I relied on a fast charger constantly to stay charged though.

I charge at home via level 2 charger a lot more than i used to. The car charges to 80% in less than 20 minutes (DC fast charge). More like 5 to 10 most of the time. After 60 % it's not worth it. Much much cheaper to charge at home. Just yesterday, I went to Shoppers and Save-On-Foods at the strip mall next to Lougheed Mall. Free level 2 chargers there. I got what I wanted at Save-On-Foods (beef brisket and peach pies, lol), a few items from Shoppers (seniors 20% off day), and browsed around at the liquor store for ten minutes. Came back to car and it was fully charged. The most expensive charging? The casinos. The charging is free, but................. My favourite is Parq Casino. Free parking and charging smack in the middle of downtown. I go do my laundry and get stuff from Costco. T&T isn't far away and being a stamp collector, the main post office is also pretty close.

I don't go out of my way to find chargers. If one is available where I go and it's free, hell yeah. IKEA, ftmfw! A lot of level two chargers have broken hardware. There used to be plenty of empty charging spots at one time, because of ths. I knew how to get around the broken tips. I discovered this early on (three years ago?). Well, guess what? I started telling people how to connect the plug so the charger would work. Tell one person and a few months later every tom's dick in harry knows about it now. Goddamnit. Never pays to be nice, lol.

Essentially. You need your regular subscriptions for Disney+, netflix etc... and you need to subscribe to Premium Connectivity for things like internet access through the screen, real time traffic, internet radio, slacker radio...

So long as you have those subscriptions, you can watch on your screen while in park.

Just received this from my local Hyundai dealer:

Quote:
Unfortunately there have been no updates from Hyundai on how the 2023 Model year is going to work for EV sales.

This includes the Ioniq5, Kona EV or any HEV or PHEV.

Any orders placed after the end of January were put into our “Reservation List” as Hyundai was not taking any more orders for 2022.

ANY Reservation placed, is being held at the store, waiting in the order received to be placed with Hyundai. This is what we were told would be the best solution until we could order them due to the huge demand.

THAT has not happened yet!

Hyundai is considering a few different methods to the ordering process including limiting us to order a small number every month. But nothing has been decided yet.
So they sold the year out within a month! I put my deposit down for an Ioniq5 in May, so maybe I need to think about something else...

Went to Fort St. John to buy a 20 year old collectible vehicle for $8k...

Drove it almost 1,200kms back to Vancouver on $150-$160 of premium gas, only had to stop once for a few minutes.

Just saying

North American outlets got their hands on the 2 row ID.Buzz. The good news is that the NA version will only be 10.6in longer meaning about 196in which is a lot better than the 203in or so of the Sienna and Odyssey. Not huge but not small. Bad news it that they still don't want to offer the 2 row version here - I'd buy the 2 row for sure but not the 3 row, don't need that much space.
