Does anyone have any recommendations for any local Toyota dealership that won't rip you off? From my experience, OpenRoad Toyota forces people to get financing and are now only allowing deposits for trade-in's only.

Openroad has been doing this for awhile.

Destination in Burnaby wasn't pushy with my sister at all... although their doc fee is like $700...... Pattison in North Van didn't request anything from me and their doc fee is $495 so a couple hundred cheaper...

Basically, we were told that they received an allocation, but that specific allocation could only be sold if it were financed. Otherwise, we would have to continue to wait for another allocation.

^ To be honest, it is an open loan.

Minimum 6 months, on the 7th month, you can pay it off lumpsum, no penalty, no interest.

The only difference for you will most likely be
$399 finance fee
6 month worth of interest

Yeah, the rate we got back then was so low we ended up continuing with the financing. Now it'd probably be a different story.

Don't like dealers? Go buy a used Prius for $20k then you have $20k for gas or buy bitcoin or Tesla stock for the next 3 years ??? Profit you can buy yourself a new model 3 when the new Prius arrives

What exactly is this "financing / documentation" fee all about? If you force a customer tho get financing, doesn't the dealership get a commission from that deal too? The person sitting in the back office probably makes the most money and does the least amount of work!

Cash grab? If you go to a restaurant or buy an iPhone or Rolex there's no documentation or adminstration fees.

That's like mandatory tipping you walk the fuck back out

Quite common right now for anything with a waitlist. Most dealers I've put deposits with were at least upfront about it - lease/finance, have a trade-in, or lease a bridge car and you will be prioritized.
If your paper says cash deal you'll be at the bottom of the list unless you're willing to pay above MSRP.
Dealerships are receiving an allocation, and they'll go down the waitlist to find someone matching all/most of these conditions. Then they'll assign the VIN to that customer and that customer will get the car.

Oh we know what the dealers are doing.

But that's not how it's supposed to work. You put a deposit down you're getting a place in line. That place in line, you put the work in to get there early enough and show your loyalty to the brand, etc... that place in line shouldn't depend on how much extra $ they can make off of you.

Perhaps the compromise is to make deposits non-refundable going forward. That woudl stop all the lookee-loo's... although dealers of popular items are still profiting regardless of that because they are able to request allocations based on those deposits.

And yes the doc fee thing started about 15 years ago as an extra tax on new vehicles... it never existed before, I have the paperwork from buying a Celica way back when and all it had on the invoice was the price of the car, the additional option of a rear spoiler and the freight+PDI and taxes. I believe shady used car places started doing it first and then dealerships picked up on it. I mean, honestly, why are you paying them to process their own paperwork? It's a joke.

I don’t disagree with how things SHOULD work (applies to many things in life) but dealers are there to make money. And at the moment the ball is in their court since supply is so heavily constrained. Now one could say to head over to the next dealer if they don’t like doing business with this one, but our dealership networks are basically as monopolistic as our telecom industry. I’m not defending their practices, just calling it as I see it.

They're really opening themselves up to people going away from their model and online shopping for cars such as Tesla... short-sighted... I know a lot of people who have been super alienated the last year or so from experiences like these and all the fees and have literally said as such... gone online and bought a Tesla instead.

If this shortage of vehicles is going to be the new normal where you're basically going on waiting lists anyways then all companies might as well just sell online and dealerships can be used for servicing and test drives. At least then there are no bullshit markups and everyone pays the same price.

Sounds like the Richmond location

I inquired there not too long ago, they will not consider a deposit unless you own or leased one of their super hot demand cars like the Rav4 Prime and Prius Prime and using it as a trade in.
