mr. toyoda just a month ago said he was very skeptical about EV rollout so it's a corporate culture thing
i think they were hoping to get decades out of TNGA and realized a good EV needs to be designed 100% ground up
Yes, it's a corporate thing. They went all in on the hybrid and Hydrogen EV's.
They even said they don't think BEV's are the way of the future and stand behind it.
Fun fact, their first full EV was built by Telsa. California spec Rav4's that were full EV.

It was those mid-2000’s RAV4’s (third-gen?), which looked like the Sport package with the spare wheel delete, and LED projector headlights. They look pretty slick, ngl.
That doesn't sound right, the EV Rav4's came out in like 98 and Tesla wasn't founded until 2003.
Damn, you are right. The Tesla ones are the second gen.
The first gen Rav4's also came as an EV.
Learned something new. Thanks.

So how was everyone's commute yesterday? I wonder how long the EV battery will last if you were stuck on the highway overnight. cuz you can't really turn on and off like a gas car. Only thing you can turn off is the climate?

The newer Teslas should be ok. They use heatpumps instead of burning the energy for heat, supposed to be significantly more efficient. I don't know about other EVs.
Using heated seats is supposed to be a lot more efficient than heating the air in the cabin to heat you as well.
My short range Soul EV fared pretty well yesterday. The heated seats are super strong and my battery didn't seem too affected with the heater on at a standstill at level 2/3 fan speed. I think it can manage a 12-hour standstill with a lower fan speed and the heater when on a full charge.

A newer tesla should be able to go a day running the climate control and radio or streaming netflix.
My local Hyundai just received a 'a couple hybrids'. Instead of going to their deposit list (which is not an order list) they are:

loading them up with accessories as well as rust prevention, under coating, diamond coating, pro-pak and road ready package. This way if you want to see what these options look like you can and if you like these models they are for sale
Rich Rebuilds did an interesting video showing how difficult and costly it is driving an EV from state to state in the mid-west. I'm was pretty shocked on the charging costs.

I’ve watched plenty of rich rebuilds and it’s not like he has a full blown love affair with Tesla either lol.
I know it’s a different type of society and Canada basically covers the entirety of Europe. But there are like no EV’s in Europe. There are probably more Tesla’s in Vancouver than a dozen European countries combined. And the charging infrastructure is non-existent

Not everyone has a Tesla, and with more non-Tesla brands coming to market with EVs, it's a real issue.
What's most surprising is the charging cost factor, there doesn't seem to be much parity between charging costs vs gasoline often times.
That's going to be a real problem if we're looking for overall adoption.
It's actually gotten quite expensive to charge outside and it hurts EV adoption. We were in Kelowna in the summer and there was a family who was driving an EV. I'm not sure which one but they said they have to drive 2 blocks away to charge because the chargers at the hotel costs too much.
I've also seen anecdotes of ppl who have to charge on the go and it's not a whole lot cheaper than gas. That detracts significantly from the argument and puts EVs squarely back into the "around town" discussion.
I haven't used public chargers, but so far all the super charging at Tesla seems pretty reasonable about $10 ish depending on how low you are. Should have bought a Tesla
But yes, since day one ev was pretty much designed for people who can charge at home / more than one car.
We are still no where near the point of "buying an EV" will save you money, even if you charge 100% at home + reduced maintenance cost.
It is still a "premium" to get into a bolt or a leaf.
Now onto general statement "you wouldnt have this problem if you bought a tesla"... I have so many friends be like, yo, I am saving so much money in gas right now while driving their model 3 around... bro, if you are driving a tesla, you defn didn't buy it to "save money" because you were budget conscious
I love Tesla in general, just I cant afford one. I think Tesla offers a lot of features that appeals to me and are frankly just not available no matter how much money you have, I will tell my wife, even Bently/Rolls don't have these. A perfect commuter car for me will be a Taycan but with some of the Tesla features and charging network.

^ Agreed. This trend it getting out of hand because everybody thinks they're saving money by driving electric. It's not the same story for a large portion of the public.
Especially now when people come in to see me about a Mercedes Electric and I ask them why, they say to save gas, I already know you're not a Mercedes EQ buyer. Gladly tell them the lowest is $90k MSRP plus taxes. Thank you, next.
I don't see charging networks as a major barrier to EV adoption. The only time I ever use a charger outside of my home is an overnight trip to somewhere like whistler.
If you go on roadtrips weekly, EV isn't the best choice, but I imagine thats a very small percentage of people

That's the provincial rebate that's once per life time and income based
The federal rebate is once per year I believe, I'll have to double check

Remember is $55,000 MSRP, not $55k before taxes....
The once per life time thing though is a double edge sword, I know people who are holding out for that 35,000 Tesla, or waiting for EV to be mass market where most EVs are 30 to 35K before rebates.
I tell them that the rebate (both federal and provincial) are from a pot (albiet differet pots) that the government sets up. No one knows when they will run out, and if they do, will the government top up again? They have done so in the past, but that doesn't mean they will keep doing it.
Once EVs are mainstream enough that there are plenty of 30K choices, maybe the government will even stop the rebate altogether even if there are still funds left in the pot.
So don't count on it, everyone's circumstances is different, if you are eyeing that EV that is 45K (not to save money ofc lolol) and the rebate can bring it down to 36K, maybe right now is the right time to pull the trigger?
