Model 3 comparison with a basic compact sedan doesn’t make financial sense. But when you use the bolt it’s much closer than most expect.

That’s the provincial rebate. There’s also a federal rebate.

No one is against EV or saying it’s not headed that way but these current cost justifications being made are wild.
with the hard stop of selling ICE cars in 2035 sooner or later we'll all be forced to buy EV's. Problem is i dont know how many households are able to support such an activity as charging stations are far and few between (for now). Still quite awhile away from mass adoption.

Yeah. A 60k model 3 vs a 27k Corolla doesn’t make financial sense. And the cheapest Corolla hybrid might be the only exception Vs a bolt. But for all of the xle or xse trims or compact models above 30k, the bolt is actually a better financial move.

Govt being stupid as usual and looking at “ideals” vs reality. There is no charging infrastructure in Vancouver unless you buy a Tesla. I’m not counting the couple stalls at superstore or the mall. Look for that deadline to be extended.

They have a bad rep because its a GM product and there was a stop sale on them a few years ago. My neighbour just picked one up after waiting 8 months and it drives like every other fwd compact car, except it’s a bit faster. Spacious inside since it’s basically a tall hatchback.

It’s Vancouver, most people wouldn’t consider a GM product. Model 3 will be interesting going forward. It looks like their inventory is building up since they slashed the pricing in China due to competition and they recently had the 5k incentive here in December. A 55k model 3 with a ~9k rebate and 0 wait would be a game changer here.

this thing isnt half bad... the trunk looks small but it might be a good contender to replace the camry. I still think the Hyundai Ionic looks better but charging both these things at home might be kind of a bitch. I dont know if my old house can do 240v without a lot of $$$

People wont need to buy Telsas. If the Chinese EVs come to market more people will buy those. VinFast is already here. They need BYD to come here as well. But charging infrastructure still be a problem.

says you're in richmond, so i assume your home has the garage/driveway attached from the front? If so, is the electrical panel in your garage? If so changes in rough-in may be minimal as there are no long feeder runs needed, the work for the most part can be done within the garage, assuming your panel has capacity for it. if not maybe share it with your laundry load and have a transfer switch of sorts.

my friend's home is set up this way, i told him it's easy work and it was. his panel had capacity

Don't bother with Vinfast, I think they're charging for "renting" the battery

Dunno where anyone is getting this $45 a month in electricity to operate an EV

My buddy in Toronto just bought a brand new Model Y, he charges at home but frequently tops up when he’s out or parked by superchargers etc. he’s always sending screen shots of $8, $10, $12 charges

Yea in a perfect world when you’re charging at home and only at home, MAYBE $45.. but my radiant heat flooring in a 5x9 bathroom costs like $8 a month, so kinda hard to believe charging a vehicle that’s going 100km+ a day is only costing you $45 even when only charged at home.

I'm telling you from my experience over the last 4 years that driving 75-125 km 5 days a week for work increased our electricity bill by about $40-$50. I do 99% of my charging at home.

Here's how I derived my home charging costs for my EV. Please let me know if there's anything I'm forgetting in my calculation. I'm not factoring in things like potential long-term wear from constant charging.

Some background info:
I charge at home 95% of the time on a 120v outlet. Sometimes I find free chargers but I don't hunt for them.
My average monthly range is 1,500km
Yearly average consumption: 15kWh / 100km*
Winter average consumption: 25kWh / 100km* (closer to 20 most of the time but reaches 25 is when I crank up the HVAC)
$/kWh from BC Hydro: $0.095 / kWh (my bill stays within Step 1)

*I drive this car 99.5% of the time alone 75% / 25% highway/city

Calculations (Yearly Average):
kWh / km = 0.15 (divide avg consumption by 100)
Cost / km = $0.01425 (0.15kWh x $0.095 / kWh)
Total Monthly Cost: $21.375 ($0.01425 x 1500km)

Calculations (Winter):
kWh/ / km = 0.25
Cost / km = $0.02375
Total Winter Monthly Cost: $35.625

This is based on a Soul EV, and I haven't done the calculation to see if it was worth it over an ICE Soul. My hunch is that I'm probably better off with a gas Soul financially, but I also value the inherent benefits of an EV like instant torque, smoother acceleration, and a quiet ride.

that I can confirm, my own clients of Kona EV and Ioniqs notice a $20 to $40 bump in their electricity bill while using the EV as their DD

As for my own prius prime

Wife uses 0 gas in her commute, we had the Prius for exactly 2 years and 20,000KM later have used 1 tank of gas (if you dont count the full tank they gave you at delivery), so the prius have visited.the gas pump exactly twice

1st fuel up after the initial delivery fuel was Feb 2021.

2nd fuel up in April 22, which we still have 3/4 tank now left...

Always fuelled with 94 octane with stablizer cuz we just dont use enough...

and I can tell you that my electricity consumption is exactly the same as before we got the prius lolol...at least I dont notice any difference if at all...

The prius is avg 13.9 kwh in summer and 16.1 kwh in winter.

Sorry Badhobz. The RC-F is going to have to wait. I'm gonna get myself a Prius Prime!

Feel free my brother! Feel free.

As a former maserati owner and a current LC owner you think depreciation is your ally? You merely adopted losing money on cars. I was born in it. Molded by it.

Except I am sure LC dont lose value?

LC to me now (mid 30s) is exactly like the original V8 S5 was to me when I was a teenager.

I love both of these cars to death, but both of these cars came to market at the wrong point in my life. I told my wife that I liternally missed the prime time for both of these cars.

If I was 35 when the 4.2 V8 S5 came out, and now approaching 50 at the LC launch... oh my.....

I am finally old enough where speed is actually pretty low down on the list of wants, and now I am stuck with turbos and performance hybrids and the vantage is an AMG and doesnt look nearly as classy as what I remembered them to be.

2006 in highschool and someone in our grade drove his dad's brand new V8 vantage to school. I was never a fan of vantage due to the "low performance" and I didn't get the "swan doors" as I was a magazine stat racer thru and thru, but god I remember that day I learned that speed isn't the end all be all, that cold start and the look, and then the way the door opens up... not in your face like the Murcie, but the ever so slight upswing to let you know that it is not your avg automobile...

its like everything clicked and I finally understood why Aston Martins still have buyers/market share etc etc etc...

don't you need to use/cycle your fuel more regularly so gas doesn't go "bad"?

Too much noise in the chat.

Doesn't your gas go bad sitting for that long? I thought it's only good for 6 months?

There's no Tesla in my future. Test drove a Model YP. The speed is flipping amazing. Everything else kind of sucks, including the price. I would be interested in a Model X, but I'm not 200k interested.

The Model Y imo is nicer than a comparable Toyota but it's not Audi/BMW/MB nice. I'll reiterate what I said before to some of my friends, the Model Y feels like a a lot of HP strapped on a car that's maybe 2000's Hyundai in terms of R&D of actual driving bits. The suspension tuning is poor, NVH is so-so. I understand that NVH in an EV is hard but I just can't deal with the bassy thumps on impacts.
The tech is impressive, but the whole one screen thing feels like a UI designer was told to try and make it work and they tried their best. I was not impressed, but given the constraints, kudos.

For 100k for a Model Y, the Audi Etron is about the same price but a much nicer car.

And honestly we are splitting hairs in terms of money. People who can afford a 100k vehicle can afford a bit of gas.

I’m sure this has been mentioned before: Tesla is a tech company designing a car, whereas the other car companies are designing EV versions of their existing products.
