Car Servicing Question?

Hi guys,
I have a question related to car servicing from certified dealerships...
I mentioned to a friend that I was going to take my Acura to Acura to service and he said " get ready to be ripped off "
But I want to keep my car personally in good shape and know its following the set scheduled manufacturers set for their cars..
Yes I can do an oil change myself but is it better to get it done by the car service center?
Also there are other things needed to be serviced anyways and i dont mind paying
Just my friend left a sour thought in my head

Thoughts and inputs about " not cheaping " out and paying for service at a certified dealer

thxs

Just do it yourself so you know you got it done properly. Going to dealerships does not mean they will do a good job. Refer to your maintenance/service book on the things needed to be serviced. If your car is new, you mainly need to do engine oil changes.

The only thing it may help with is having all the service records at a certified shop when you sell the car to someone down the line, and even then only a certain person might care. If you're capable of doing your own oil changes then go ahead at least you'll know it was done properly.

Oil changes are easy, but not everyone is up for the tasks. Especially in this cold weather..

You don't specifically have to go to a dealership to get it serviced. If you have a goto place for maintenance, they can do the job and most likely cheaper than a dealership.

Service records these days aren't super common, so going to a dealership doesn't mean your car is in any better shape or form than the next. If its for selling purposes, it's only a piece of paper saying you did an oil change. No big deal. It wouldnt be a deal breaker to me.

Unless you drive a super sought after car. Regular maintenance from any mechanic is all you need. Find one who knows the car well, they will then be able to find cheaper parts and will have experience with the vehicle so labor hours should be a little less also.

Just because a mechanic works for a dealership, doesn't mean they're a good mechanic... or that they'll give a fuck about your car. I've witnessed a complete gong show of a dealership service shop once, including leaving a customer's brand new truck out in the pouring rain with the windows open (then just offering him a towel and a blank stare when he came back to complain about it)....

This was all while we were waiting for them to finish some service on our minivan... and when they did finish, they couldn't find the keys, despite searching for over half an hour. The manager eventually had a new key programmed for us but seemed pissed at us, as if it was our fault. They called us three days later to inform us they'd sent our keys home with another customer... and THAT bimbo, when the keys they gave her for HER van didn't work, simply pulled out her spare and headed home with them.

So, yeah... other than the paper trail, there's nothing special about dealership service.

I was pretty happy with Discovery Honda up until the last year before I sold my Honda. Same people work there, so I'm not sure what changed. I got 25% off labour and 15% off parts because my family has bought several vehicles there.

I take my Nissan to an independent mechanic because the dealerships on the island are garbage in my experience.

I bought a BMW in April and have been very satisfied with the first couple of visits to BMW Nanaimo. Fantastic service and has been less expensive than Honda so far even without a discount.

My building doesn't allow you to work on or even wash your car, so everything has to be done off-site. Personally, I used to change my oil and other basic maintenance when I lived at home, but it's nice to just drop my car off and have it done while I'm at work.
