I would say the cost savings for gas is about 30% less than a V8, and even less if you drive a turbo 4 aggressively.
It's great for low-end torque, but at the high-end rpms, the turbos don't do much for the driving experience.
And, the exhaust note will always be less visceral unless you put in an after market exhaust system.
So, turbo 4s:
Pros:
Better fuel economy
Better for city driving
low rpm higher torque
Cons:
Less visceral feel
Worse exhaust note
Lower power at the higher rpms (so, not as good a driving experience on the highway)
So, to an extent, IMHO, I believe it depends on the driving locality.
City or highway?
For the new 718 owners that do a lot of city driving, turbo 4s "should" be better.
For highway, 6s and 8s NAs are unquestionably the better driving experience.
In the end, I have a feeling that a lot of the new owners or potential buyers are looking for a city-driving experience; therefore, Porsche will sell more and many 718s in the future.
Porsche unveiled the 718 few days ago (at least for the boxster, nothing on the cayman yet)
Configurator is already up on their website.
10% increase in HP and 30% more torque. (from 275HP->300HP, 207lb-ft>280lb-ft)
6.9L/100km? Not sure how accurate this is...but that's about the same fuel consumption as a civic.
Not a big fan of the exterior change tho. The front intake grill look a bit cheap, and the porsche badge underneath the spoiler looks really tacky.
Hefty price increase too (base went from $58K to $64K), I guess they justify it since the new base model performance is about the same as the 981 Boxster S.
im buying one because its no longer the poor man's 911.
its a 718!

I would hit it, with the Manual model. It's gotta be lots of fun to drive this thing. Boxsters get a lot of hate; usually from the people who have never driven them. They're great handling cars.

They are amazing track cars. People are just obsessed with 911s for the brand name.
I actually think it looks a lot better. The front grill, and the edge that runs from the bumper light to the corner and down. And the grill along the back between the tail lights, bigger diffuser, and the dark tail lights. All give it a little bit more of a sophistication and take away that miata-anime-smiley melted bar of butter chick car look. And it doesn't look like a baby 911 anymore.
It isnt alot different when you compare it to the old one, but it is a little better. The back end especially doesn't look as soft.
914 was a failure. But 45 years down the road, its in my top 3 Porsches to own! Haha
I had a 72' back in the day. It had the worst fuel injection system ever, the Bosch K-jetronic. But what a fun car.
hmmmm....... maybe a modern day mid engined 4 cylinder Porsche is just what I need to make up for the sale of my STi. I miss having a fun, fast car. But never really needed the extra seating.
imo, i think that the current design is cleaner and less fussy. but hey, maybe with the new 4cyl turbos put in the boxter, people wont conspire about the fact that porsche is putting detuned 911 engines in them
